Giant Anaconda Caught In The Jungles Of Guyana
Real-life Indiana Jones, Niall McCann, realises a life's ambition by catching a giant anaconda. The adventurer, who has rowed the Atlantic and trekked across Greenland's Polar Ice Cap, pounced on the jungle giant, which weighed around 100kg and had a girth of 27ins. The 29-year-old biologist from Cardiff was exploring the tropical rainforests of Guyana when he happened across the monster reptile on a bank of the Rewa River. Niall, who has a passion for handling creatures that would have most people shaking in their boots, said: "I'd always dreamed of seeing an anaconda and I knew that our work in Guyana would give us a real possibility of seeing one. I was trying to hold its head to the ground and it kept trying to turn its head to bite me - it was wrestle. Its strength was amazing and when a ripple went through its body it shook all of us." music by Incompetech.com

Florence Kersting, Painting Guyana
Florence Kersting was born in British Guiana, now known as the Republic of Guyana, of East Indian heritage. When she was seven years old, she discovered her artistic abilities, but this was during her battle with malaria, which lasted for several years. In her primary school days, she attended St. Winifred Roman Catholic School and one of her teachers was Ms. Panzy Burrowes, who showed Florence's art work to her father. Florence would later learn that her teacher's dad was the famous ER Burrowes, the "Father of the Art Movement" in British Guiana. Mr. Burrowes encouraged her to pursue her art of which he said was a "gift". Needless to say she did not follow her art, but instead she got married and at the age of 25 years old she was a mother of five children. Her artistic abilities were unknown to her husband and children at that time. In 1969, Florence and her husband Rene went to New York on vacation. There, they both visited several art museums. She was so inspired at what she had seen that when they returned to Guyana, she was motivated to have a "One Woman" Art Exhibition (much to her husband's dismay who had no idea as to the extent of her abilities). Her goal is to immortalize Guyana and to remember some of the good times we all had in the early years. She would like also to remember the characters we knew as children eg Ice Cart Man, Badaam Lacha!! Walker the British, Telegraph Man, to name a few. This will be done to update the children who were born here in the ...

Guyana's Constitution under the Microscope
The Constitution of Guyana is the highest governing document in the Republic of Guyana. It officially came into effect on October 6, 1980. However, it was not Guyana's first constitution; previous to this current one, Guyana had a different constitution that was enacted in 1966, upon its independence from the United Kingdom. Constitution reform is currently a topic being discussed with great vibrancy in Guyana today. It is also attracting the attention of a number of foreign financial and diplomatic institutions, if only because of its pivotal nature in the matter of 'Governance' and its relationship with economic and social development. These discussions and interests are however inhibited by the absence of easily accessible information, in a single coherent document, that purports to show what the Constitution of Guyana would look like if the reforms stated in the report of the Constitution Reform Commission (July 17, 1999) were all to be implemented.

Smuggling threatens Guyana's gold rush
The South American nation of Guyana is losing tens of millions of dollars each year because of widespread gold smuggling, despite the fact that the precious metal now ranks second after agriculture in the revenue it generates for the country. Gold is worth almost $400 million dollars a year to Guyana; stores are full of merchandise made with locally produced gold. The surge in the price of the metal has also led to billions of dollars in investment in the mining sector. Yet the country loses up to a third of its gold revenue as a result of smuggling. A World Wildlife Fund study estimates that tonnes of the country's gold is being moved illegally across the border into Suriname. Al Jazeera's Anand Naidoo reports from Georgetown, Guyana.

Guyana - Land of many waters
Despite its bustling capital, colonial architecture, and historic slave plantations, this small English-speaking country on the north coast of South America still has that "undiscovered feeling". Travelling inland along the rivers and through the rainforests and southern Savannahs, we meet Amerindian tribes, jaguars and that "night watchman", the crocodile.
