But in reality oil is washing up on the beaches, local residents are falling ill and the peak of the crisis is yet to come. "We are glad to report all beaches and waters are open", states BP in a new advertising campaign. For the oil company business can resume as normal, but for the communities whose livelihoods rely upon the waters around the Gulf of Mexico business could not be worse: "there are no oysters growing so our future is very uncertain". Moreover, many locals who volunteered during the clear up are now suffering potentially fatal health problems caused by toxins in the chemical BP used to disperse the oil, Corexit 9527. "They are having breathing problems, headaches, breaking out in rashes, asthma...", explains a community worker, Glenda Perryman. And there could still be a wider threat to human health; strong evidence suggests the oil has got into the food chain. "We're finding it in larger quantities over a one-year period after the spill, so it's bio-accumulating. It's going to impact on generations to come", says Wilma Subra, an environmental scientist. As with the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, it will take a few more years before the real impact of this spill is felt. Hungary red sludge spill as big as Gulf of Mexico leak?
The mighty river Danube seems to have absorbed Hungary's massive red sludge spill with little immediate damage, but laboratory tests heightened concerns about possible longer-term harm caused by toxic heavy metals in the slurry. Estimates of the size of Monday's catastrophic spill have already been compared to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The reservoir break at an alumina plant dumped up to 700000 cubic metres (184 million gallons) of sludge onto three villages - not much less in a few hours than the 200 million gallons the blown-out BP oil well gushed into the Gulf over several months beginning in April. Efforts are being made to stop the the pollutants from flowing into the Danube following the spill of chemical waste. Meanwhile, a fifth person, an 81-year-old man, died Friday from injuries sustained in the torrent.

Florida Keys hit by oil threat
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is having economic effects even in areas where, so far, there has been no oil. In the Florida Keys off the southeastern United States, the vital tourism industry has been hit hard as visitors cancel trips because, local officials say, there is a "perception" that oil has come ashore. This demonstration is of the deepest parts of Gulf of Mexico, between 3400 meters and 4800 meters. The "Sigsbee Abyssal Plane" is often called the Grand Canyons of the Seas. The "De Soto Canyon" is located not far from the beaches of Pensacola in that direction. I used Terragen Deep for the 3D modeling and the animation, and Autodesk Combustion's particles for the water effect.
