LPS-SJ Free Hug Day
High school students at Leadership Public School in San Jose returned from their holiday break to be welcomed back with smiles and hugs as part of a Free Hug Day initiative, organized by LPS San Jose's martial arts club. "Reaching out and connecting with people IS self-defense," according to Greg Garcia, a 5th degree black belt and a faculty member at LPS San Jose. "It takes a lot of personal strength to comfort another human being. It breaks down the barriers between people." Initially beginning with a handful of students, the initiative quickly built up in popularity, attracting over 70 volunteers who collectively inspired over 1000 hugs in one day. Breaking Serenity a brand new band that so far fans characterize their musical style as something true, melodic, Heavy and very original in its own way . Breaking Serenity, with heavy, hard driven guitars, has combined Hard rock, Metalcore music styles for a head banging beat you can imagine people of all ages, across the board rocking out to. Breaking Serenity, out of Norco, California broke out of the Country Western mold and hit the Town hard with their first band Cries Of Heaven and Hell in 2005. Cries of Heaven and Hell also known to fans as COHAH, recorded a full length CD of their own original written music and played venues throughout Southern California creating a huge fan base that stretched across the Continent. Rhythm/Lead guitarist Niko Garcia, along with twin's bass player Nik Garcia and drummer Greg Garcia started playing together during their freshman year in High School. Their band Cries Of Heaven and Hell played shows opening at the Whiskey, and the galaxy theatre for bands such as All That Remains, Kittie, Walls Of Jericho, Suicide Silence, and many more. Upon graduation, the original band went its separate ways although the three Garcia's continued to play, write, and stretch their musical talents. Epic WWW 2011: Vision Flight (Trailer)
In May 2011, a group of teens accompanied martial arts master teacher Greg Garcia on an extraordinary life-changing journey as a part of their training through Epic Martial Arts, a non-profit martial arts program based out of Leadership Public High School in San Jose, California. Each year, LPS students participate in a weeklong educational program called Week Without Walls, an innovative journey in which students, guided by their teachers, learn directly from real-world experiences. This year, LPS members of Epic became active participants in the program's 4th annual Black Belt Test - an adventure which challenged them mentally, physically, and emotionally as they faced a series of demanding trials. As a high school program, Epic and LPS are grateful to the artists and teachers whose work inspired this video and the accompanying journey.
