July 28, 2009 Berkeley Lab summer lecture: Gravitational lensing is explained by Einstein's general theory of relativity: galaxies and clusters of galaxies, which are very massive objects, act on spacetime by causing it to become curved. Alexie Leauthaud and Reiko Nakajima, astrophysicists with the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics, will discuss how scientists use gravitational lensing to investigate the nature of dark energy and dark matter in the universe.

What is the gravitational acceleration in Minecraft? Let us find out! ------------------------- About the initial height: TLDR: It's negligible I only noticed the initial height after I recorded the video, but I conducted additional experiments on the significance of this. The initial height only affects the the maximum height, which causes the maximum height to be 42 instead of 43. Both the time and the horizontal distance are the same. If the initial height is taken into account, the gravitational acceleration would be 17ms^-2. All the values used and measured were rounded to two significant figures (for convenience and for future videos), which mean that the last digit falls within the expected variation in error with significant figures. The error from the height is negligible compared to the error in measurement. A tip of the hat to reddit for starting a discourse on scientific rigour. The rigourous answer is 16.9m/s^2 This is a just parody of science videos. Improved Hubble Shows Evidence of Dark Matter
As you may be aware, in May of this year, NASA launched its final mission to the HST to perform an upgrade. During this tricky mission, the astronauts replaced several key instruments with brand new ones, making the HST into an essentially brand new telescope. Now anybody who's watched this channel for any length of time knows how I feel about the HST, I think it's one of the most important scientific instruments ever created. It has shown us views of our universe and provided context of our place within it in a way that has never before been done by anything since the invention of the telescope itself. So it shouldn't come as any surprise that these latest images from the Hubble's upgraded cameras are among the most amazing ever taken. Tidal effects: The tides on the Earth are mostly generated by the gradient in intensity of the Moon's gravitational pull from one side of the Earth to the other, the tidal forces. This forms two tidal bulges on the Earth, which are most clearly seen in elevated sea level as ocean tides. Since the Earth spins about 27 times faster than the Moon moves around it, the bulges are dragged along with the Earth's surface faster than the Moon moves, rotating around the Earth once a day as it spins on its axis. The ocean tides are magnified by other effects: frictional coupling of water to Earth's rotation through the ocean floors, the inertia of water's movement, ocean basins that get shallower near land, and oscillations between different ocean basins.The gravitational attraction of the Sun on the Earth's oceans is almost half that of the Moon, and their gravitational interplay is responsible for spring and neap tides. Gravitational coupling between the Moon and the bulge nearest the Moon acts as a torque on the Earth's rotation, draining angular momentum and rotational kinetic energy from the Earth's spin. In turn, angular momentum is added to the Moon's orbit, accelerating it, which lifts the Moon into a higher orbit with a longer period. As a result, the distance between the Earth and Moon is increasing, and the Earth's spin slowing down. Booming Sands
Sand on a dune possesses energy in the form of gravitational potential energy. The greater the height of the sand dune, the more gravitational potential energy the sand on top has. When the sand on top of a steep dune is disturbed, it slides down the slope, and gravitational potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy.
