Kinect Hand Detection
This is a graphical interface inspired by the movie "Minority Report". It uses the Kinect sensor from Microsoft, and the recently released libfreenect driver for interfacing with the Kinect in linux. The graphical interface and the hand detection software were written at MIT to interface with the open source robotics package 'ROS', developed by Willow Garage (willowgarage.com). The hand detection software showcases the abilities of the Point Cloud Library (PCL), a part of ROS that MIT has been helping to optimize. The hand detection software is able to distinguish hands and fingers in a cloud of more than 60000 points at 30 frames per second, allowing natural, real time interaction. Full Throttle
Full Throttle was a graphical adventure game done by LucasArts in 1995. The story was about Ben, the leader of a biker gang called the Polecats. It took place in a semi-apocalyptic dark future. Ben had some trouble with the founder of the last domestic motorcycle manufacturer and after he woke up, he had to find his gang first. LucasArts made two attempts to make a sequel to Full Throttle. The first attempt, called Full Throttle II: Payback, was cancelled prior to 2000. In 2003, LucasArts tried it again with Full Throttle: Hell On Wheels, but it was cancelled as well. Developed in 1981 and released in 1982 by On-Line Systems (now Sierra Entertainment), the game was shipped with six double sided floppy disks and contained 1500 areas (screens) to explore along with 39 scenarios to solve. Produced at a time when most games rarely took up more than one side of a floppy, Time Zone is believed to be one of if not the very first game of this magnitude ever released for home computer systems. Learning how to use LabVIEW for making cool applications
This is a video we made to help introduce people to some of the concepts in LabVIEW. LabVIEW is a programming language that was created in 1986 and has become very popular among engineers and scientists because it is almost entirely graphical. Graphical programming languages like LabVIEW are really great for people that don't like or don't understand text based languages like C++ or C#. You can do all of the things that a text based language can do but you don't have to worry about things like thread management or memory allocation. You can even create fairly powerful applications for multicore processors that truly take advantage of the different cores. This video is a TV show made about the software Ivan Sutherland developed in his 1963 thesis at MIT's Lincoln Labs, "Sketchpad, A Man-Machine Graphical Communication System", described as one of the most influential computer programs ever written. This work was seminal in Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), Computer Aided Design (CAD), and contraint/object-oriented programming. While watching this video, remember that the TX-2 computer (built circa 1958) on which the software ran was built from discrete transistors (not integrated circuits -it was room-sized) and contained just 64K of 36-bit words (~272k bytes).
