Last month, the federal reserve bank of new york invited some of its critics, including our guest, to, as he put it "unburden themselves of their criticisms." The text of his remarks was published in the March 23rd issue of Grant's, and it is most certainly worth reading for those who are wise enough to subscribe. There are a number of points that James Grant makes in his remarks that we have repeated ad nauseum on this show ourselves: accountability for bank executives, a functioning price mechanism, sound money...you know...capitalism. But the editor of Grant's Interest Rate Observer also makes another interesting proposal with respect to what he would do if, by some act of market revenge, he were made Chairman of the Monetary Priesthood. He would, as he put it: "commission, staff, and ceremonially open the Fed's first Office of Unintended Consequence." Economics is, after all, a social science, and as such, is beholden to the unintended consequences brought about by the actions of the observer as much as by those of the subject being observed. Imagine if we designated responsibility for precipitation and cloud cover to executives at "The Weather Channel?" Operation Petticoat is a 1959 comedy film directed by Blake Edwards, and starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. It was the basis for a television series in 1977 starring John Astin in Grant's role. The film tells in flashback form the misadventures of a fictional American submarine, the USS Sea Tiger, during the opening days of World War II. Other members of the cast include several actors who went on to become television stars in the 1960s and 1970s: Gavin MacLeod of The Love Boat and McHale's Navy, Marion Ross of Happy Days, and Dick Sargent of Bewitched. Paul King, Joseph Stone, Stanley Shapiro, and Maurice Richlin were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Writing. This LIVE presentation looks at the history of UFOs in presidential campaigns, UFOs in elections, how some candidates have stood on the UFO issue, and news on the UFO files being released by government agencies and institutions. Grant Cameron (Canada) became involved in extraterrestrial-related phenomena research in May 1975 with a personal sighting near Carman, Manitoba about 25 miles north of the Canada-US border. Over the next 18 months hundreds of sightings were reported, and Grant spent months photographing a series of strange objects and interviewing hundreds of witnesses who were involved. Thus began a 28 year commitment to the subject of UFOs. Grant later moved on to research the work of the legendary Wilbert B. Smith.
