Caroline van der Leeuw studeerde in 2005 af in de vakken jazz en zang aan het conservatorium. Van der Leeuw is één van de zes zangeressen van Les Elles, een Amsterdamse close harmony groep, en zingt in de Philharmonic Funk Foundation, een 44 man sterk Funk orkest. Daarnaast doet ze regelmatig de achtergrondzang bij het Kinderen voor Kinderen songfestival. Van der Leeuw geeft zangles aan de zangschool van Babette Labeij (bekend als vocal coach bij Popstars, Idols en X-Factor). [bewerken] Eerste single Van der Leeuw verwierf onder haar artiestennaam Caro Emerald meer bekendheid door de single Back It Up. Het nummer was oorspronkelijk door drie Nederlandse producers en songwriter Vince Degiorgio (oa *NSYNC, Atomic Kitten, Aloha from Hell) geschreven voor een Japanse popact. Van der Leeuw werd benaderd voor het inzingen van de demo. Zij voegde het nummer toe aan het eigen repertoire. Het liedje bleef onbekend tot Van der Leeuw in 2008 het nummer live zong op de lokale Amsterdamse tv-zender AT5 onder de artiestennaam Caro. Hierna pakte Arrow Jazz FM het nummer over, zodat ze ook buiten Amsterdam bekend werd. Back It Up werd op 6 juli 2009 uitgebracht op Grandmono Records, het label van de producers David Schreurs en Jan van Wieringen. Haar artiestennaam Caro werd tegelijkertijd veranderd in Caro Emerald.
