Beautiful Gower
The Gower Peninsula in all its beauty For Mary en.wikipedia.org Gower, or Gwyr in Welsh is the delectable peninsula that runs some 18 miles east from Swansea. The unique landscape composition of limestone headlands, sandy bays, ruined castles, and downs, that has deservedly been set aside as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is a surprise to find such unspoilt country, basically unexploited. Geologically Gower is formed by two rocks - limestone and Old Red Sandstone. The limestone forms the cliffs and the coastline on the south, the Old Red Sandstone heaves up from within the limestone in the humpback downs of Cefn Bryn, Rhossili and Llanmadog. The limestone plateau lies at a level of 200 feet, cut by the sea about 1 million years ago and then lifted to its present site. In the Ice Age, the whole area was covered by the glaciers that overrode Gower and Pembrokeshire from the Irish Sea. The final melting of the ice, and the corresponding upliftment of the land, have left their mark in the raised beaches that ring the coast. As the ice disappear, early man appeared. Gower had yielded impressive evidence of early man in the famous bone caves in the limestone of the south coast and on the open site of Burry Holms. Later, somewhere around 3000BC the westward moving colonists of the megalithic tomb-builders settled in Gower. They left their memorials in the great cromlechs, from Arthur's Stone to Giant's Grave that lie all over the peninsula. Rhossili is the climax of ...

"West is Best" Pembrokeshire - Gower Peninsula Microlight Adventure
The term "West is Best" was much used by Scarlets', Lions' and Wales' rugby legend Ray Gravell to describe this wonderful part of Wales - my hope is that this short film potrays it. This film starts with a departure and climb out in a Quik 912s weight shift microlight from the first green at Rosemarket golf club, Pembrokeshire before crossing the impressive River Cleddau and its tributaries - and heading east at 1'500 feet and some fun over Oakwood theme park and the Blue Lagoon at Bluestone. Due to the bumby ride - a climb up to 7'000 feet for some wonderful views of West Wales including the sands at Pendine, before crossing Carmarthen Bay and skimming above the tops of the clouds in perfect air - it was magical!. Carmarthen Bay Airspace is controlled by RAF Pembrey Sands Air Weapons Range (D117) and used primarily as an air-to-ground bombing and strafing practice area, but due to the range being "cold" of activity I was granted permission to cross. I descended over the town of Burry Port aside the Loughor Estuary, before crossing the narrow stretch of water to the Gower Peninsula, for a wide left base and touchdown on runway 04 at Swansea. The 40 min flight is edited to the track "Higher State" by Toploader. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Karl Jenkins attended Gowerton Grammar School in Swansea. Jenkins began his musical career as an oboist in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Chita says: "The people who try and change 'Birdie' tend to mess it up. It's anchored in a particular time and place. In my opinion, the original ending that (director) Gower Champion gave it is inspired. The musical theater that I came from always ended the same way: After all these big numbers, the whole cast comes downstage and sings whatever was supposed to be the show's hit song in this big, overblown fashion. What Gower did to end 'Birdie' was to have two people, Albert and Rose singing this very simple, very sweet song called 'Rosie' and just walking into the sunset. It couldn't have been more effective or more beautiful."
