government spending

Does Government Have a Revenue or Spending Problem?

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co People say the government has a debt problem. Debt is caused by deficits, which is the difference between what the government collects in tax revenue and the amount of government spending. Every time the government runs a deficit, the government debt increases. So what's to blame: too much spending, or too little tax revenue? Economics professor Antony Davies examines the data and concludes that the root cause of the debt is too much government spending.

Does Government Spending Create Economic Growth?

If you knew a dollar invested in something would wind up losing more than a dollar, would you consider that a good investment? The government does just that when it starts spending taxpayer and borrowed money. Watch as Professor Antony Davies of Duquesne University explains the unseen costs of government spending and the best way to stimulate the economy: the private sector. "In the best case scenario what we see is still no relationship between government spending and economic growth. In the worst-case scenario, we actually see a negative relationship. That is, as the government spends more money, the economy actually contracts." --Antony Davies Check out www.economicfreedom.org to see the rest of our videos!

When Governments Cut Spending

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co Do governments ever cut spending? According to Dr. Stephen Davies, there are historical examples of government spending cuts in Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and America. 25 craziest things the US government spends money on

Government Waste The Economic Collapse Blog You are not going to believe some of the things that the US government is spending money on. According to a shocking new report, US taxpayer money is being spent to study World of Warcraft, to study how Americans find love on the Internet, and to study the behavior of male prostitutes in Vietnam. Not only that, but money from the federal government is also being used to renovate a pizzeria in Iowa and to help a library in Tennessee host video game parties. These are just some of the examples in a new report on government waste from Senator Tom Coburn entitled "Wastebook 2010". Even as tens of millions of American families find themselves suffering through the worst economic downturn in modern history, the US government continues to spend money on some of the craziest and most frivolous things imaginable. Every single year articles are written and news stories are done about the horrific government waste that is taking place and yet every single year it just keeps getting worse. So just what in the world is going on here? It almost seems as though Congress actually enjoys inventing new ways to waste US taxpayer money. It seems nearly inconceivable that anyone could keep a straight face while trying to justify spending money on many of the things in the list below. At a time when the US national debt is closing in on 14 trillion dollars, government waste just seems more out of control than ever. The following are 20 of the ...

Government over-spending in California continues unabated despite poor economic conditions. In 2007, state revenue was over $105 billion. In 2012, state revenue will be just $82 billion. Fiscal Policy - The Government Spending Multiplier

This video will introduce and explain the effect of an expansionary fiscal policy on aggregate demand, specifically an increase in government spending. When government spending increases, household incomes rise and therefore consumption increases, further adding to the expansionary effect on Aggregate Demand. Is Austerity to Blame for Europe's Economic Woes?

From Nobel laureate Paul Krugman to the free-market-friendly Economist magazine to former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, all sorts of experts are charging that financial austerity measures are killing the great economies of Europe. "Austerity Is So Wrong!" reads the headline of a Krugman piece at The Daily Beast that argues against cutting government spending during weak economic times. But the critics of austerity have got it all wrong, says Mercatus Center economist and Reason columnist Veronique de Rugy. For starters, many European countries haven't cut spending at all and, among the ones that have, most have made relatively minor trims while also hiking taxes. That's known as "the balanced approach," notes de Rugy, and it almost never works to reduce debt-to-GDP ratios or get economies moving again. Yet critics of cutting government spending in a weak economy ignore academic research showing that significant spending cuts, structural reforms to entitlements, and loosening labor regulations are proven ways to reduce debt loads and get countries moving again. De Rugy talked with Reason's Nick Gillespie about austerity and its discontents - and what the United States could learn from Germany's economic reforms made earlier this century. About 7 minutes long. Produced by Jim Epstein; camera by Epstein and Meredith Bragg. The Story of Broke Response

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co Prof. Art Carden responds to "The Story of Broke" (bit.ly a recent video by the creators of "The Story of Stuff." In "The Story of Broke," Annie Leonard claims that the government isn't actually broke. Rather, the government just wastes resources on the wrong things like subsidies to the dinosaur economy and war. She claims that the government should change its ways, and instead, subsidize firms that will bring us the future we really want. Art Carden agrees with Leonard that war and subsidies are wasteful, but is skeptical of notion that there is one unified vision for the future. To Carden, everyone has a different vision for the future. Our path to the future, he argues, is determined by the interactions of billions of unique individuals pursuing their own objectives. Additionally, Carden questions Leonard's distinction between bad subsidies and good subsidies. Every subsidy, deemed good or bad, must be allocated through the political process. Lobbyists and special interests exert a large degree of influence on political decisions, and they use this power to direct subsidies in their own favor at everyone else's expense. Carden concludes that government spending won't buy a brighter future. A brighter future will emerge when people are allowed to spend money on things they care about. Put another way, positive change will come from billions of people cooperating freely and voluntarily with one another ...

DAMN IT PEOPLE DON'T YOU GET IT??? Part 4, Markets, Fiat Crap & Sound Money

Please watch this too. Astounding work! I Highly recommend! www.youtube.com Written By, Ron Paul Many who agree with me on a lot of other issues, do not understand my enthusiasm for gold and sound money or why I spend so much time studying and talking about monetary policy. It's true that I talk about money differently than most, but the fact is sound money offers many benefits. For example -- peace. Can sound money really bring about peace? Actually, it plays a big part in peaceful international relationships. Money based on commodities, rather than paper, is not subject to government manipulation, and is a key component to free and honest trade. History shows that if countries engage in trade with each other, their governments tend to find ways to get along for the same reason you do not kill your customers at your place of business, even if they occasionally annoy you. If someone outright cheats you, however, you may engage in "war" by taking them to court, for example, and the relationship will sour. Governments and central banks with unfettered power to manipulate currency also have the ability to cheat their creditors. One way they do this is to simply create enough currency to pay off debts. This devalues the currency and "cheats" the recipient out of what they are owed. It would not be fair if you watered down your product the way our government waters down its currency, so it is not hard to understand, in these simplified terms, why loose monetary policy ...

Mike Shedlock tackles Paul Krugman and the Greenspan Contrarian Indicator (GCI)

Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. So what is this austerity we keep hearing all about. Well, this isn't word of the day, but let's look at a quick definition: noun, plural aus·ter·i·ties. 1. austere quality; severity of manner, life, etc.; sternness. 2. Usually, austerities. ascetic practices: austerities of monastery life. Hmm...sounds pretty awful. I wouldn't want to live in a monastery or live a "stern" lifestyle. But does cutting back on government spending equate to "austerity?" Well, maybe in the short-run for those whose incomes drop as a result, but what about longer term, what does austerity mean? There seems to be this popular notion among mainstream economists that there are periods, like the one we are in today, where the private sector, willy nilly, just stops spending. This is otherwise known as a "crisis in aggregate demand," and the solution, according to people like Paul Krugman, is for the government to step in and spend money. But why is the private sector not spending. Again, mainline economists point to something called "the paradox of thrift," in order to explain away this...well...paradox! They believe that people, responding to negative future expectations about growth, income and security, choose to save an ever greater amount of their ever declining income. By doing what is in their own best interests, as the theory goes, the whole of humanity drives itself and its economy to a grinding halt and back into the stone ...
