Glasgow Subway (Underground)

Originally built for the Glasgow District Subway Company, the railway first opened in 1896 as a cable-hauled system. Propulsion was provided by stationary steam engines and the railway was hailed as the first of its type in the world. The Subway is generally recognised as the world's third underground railway, after London and Budapest. In 1923 the Subway passed into the hands of Glasgow Corporation Transport Department, and in the following decade the railway was converted to electric traction, introducing a third 'live' rail for the purpose. The railway ran with little further change until 1977, when the new operators, Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive, closed it for major modernisation investment. The railway in its present form reopened for operation on 16 April 1980. Now part of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, the railway is one of the very few railways in UK remaining in public ownership and 'vertically integrated', where SPT's responsibility covers all aspects of operation and infrastructure

Emirates B777-300ER go-around at Glasgow Airport

Saturday 21st January 2012 was a blustery day at Glasgow Airport with a strong crosswind. We'd assembled to catch the final batch of transiting Moroccan Texans leaving for Bordeaux in France. The only other movement worthy of our attention was the 11:44 EK27 flight from Dubai. Little did we know the last minute drama that was about to unfold as the giant jumbo turned the power on following a dose of windshear and performed a "go around", landing safely at the second attempt..

Glasgow Necropolis 2012 HD - Explore Abandoned Scotland スコットランド

Join us on facebook here: www.facebook.com Subscribe here: www.youtube.com www.facebook.com Having visited several abandoned places we decided to visit "the city of the dead" also known as the Glasgow Necropolis. The Glasgow Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery in Glasgow, Scotland. It is on a low but very prominent hill to the east of Glasgow Cathedral (St. Mungo's Cathedral). Fifty thousand individuals have been buried here. Typically for the period only a small percentage are named on monuments and not every grave has a stone. Approximately 3500 monuments exist here. Predating the cemetery, the statue of John Knox sitting on a column at the top of the hill, dates from 1825. Alexander Thomson designed a number of its tombs, and John Bryce and David Hamilton designed other architecture for the grounds. en.wikipedia.org Music is by The Northern Hemisphere - Sunshade Recored with a Canon 600d / Panasonic SD60. Glasgow Film Festival - Gene Kelly flashmob at Glasgow Airport

Travellers at Glasgow Airport on Tuesday 14 February 2012 were treated to an unexpected dance routine reminiscent of quintessential song'n'dance man Gene Kelly, ahead of the retrospective of his films at Glasgow Film Festival. The flashmob entertained passengers with a version of the legendary Singin' in the Rain dance, which made Kelly an icon. Gene Kelly was one of the greatest all-round talents ever to tap-dance his way across the silver screen. Kelly left an indelible impression on the movies as an actor, director and choreographer which can be seen during Glasgow Film Festival 2012 in all-time classics like Anchors Aweigh (1945), The Pirate (1948), Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), On the Town (1949), An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), Brigadoon (1954) and Hello, Dolly (1969) from 18--26 February. The Gene Kelly retrospective is one of nineteen strands at Glasgow Film Festival 2012, which runs from 16 -- 26 February.
