Rolling Stones-Gimme Shelter at Altamont
The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was an infamous rock concert held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway in northern California, between Tracy and Livermore. Headlined and organized by The Rolling Stones, it also featured, in order of appearance: Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, with the Rolling Stones taking the stage as the final act. The Grateful Dead were also scheduled to perform, but declined to play shortly before their scheduled appearance due to the increasing violence at the venue. That's the way things went at Altamont so badly that the Grateful Dead, prime organizers and movers of the festival, didn't even get to play. Approximately 300000 people attended the concert, and some anticipated that it would be a "Woodstock West." The event is best known for having been marred by considerable violence, including one homicide and three accidental deaths: two caused by a hit-and-run car accident and one by drowning in an irrigation canal. Four births were reported during the event as well.Lead singer Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones (who had already been punched by a concertgoer within seconds of emerging from his helicopter)was visibly intimidated by the unruly situation, urging everyone to "Just be cool down in the front there, don't push around." Dieses Konzert hat seine traurige Berühmtheit dadurch erhalten, dass es als völliges Chaos begann und im Tod des 18-jährigen Meridith Hunter seinen tragischen Höhepunkt erreichte. Die Stones spielten nämlich mit ein paar anderen Bands (ua Jefferson Airplane) gratis, allerdings war die Logistik dieses Konzertes eine Katastrophe, die Bühne nur einen Meter hoch, es gab keinerlei Organisation und zu allem Überfluss wurden als Security die Hell's Angels engagiert, was zu permanenten Schlägereien an der Bühne führte - einer der Angels wars es dann auch, der Meridith Hunter direkt vor der Bühne und vor laufenden Kameras erstochen hat.

This is the story of Viet/Now. The United States government first supports a dictator in a foreign land most Americans know little about. They argue that this country has to be defended to stop an evil threat which will take freedom away like dominoes falling. An American President uses flimsy evidence of a threat to Americans to mislead his public into supporting the war. The media sells the story. A charismatic General heads the campaign with the backing of Congress. The public is full of pride but little knowledge. Young men are drafted into service, mainly from poor and minority areas. They are thrown into alien places to fight for and against a different culture that they can't distinguish. While the poor fight amongst the poor, corporations make record profits by creating military hardware. When atrocities happen, some in the media start to report it. The youth of the world, sympathetic to their soldier peers and angry at the war machine, begin to speak out against the war. This grows to include parents, clergy, unions, teachers, and seniors. The war is sold as protection of democracy, but those who question it are branded traitors. The soldiers are used as a "baby shield" to foster national pride while hiding the motivations of the current administration. In 1993, Voice Of The Beehive teamed up with former Bronksi Beat and Communards singer Jimmy Somerville to record a cover of the Rolling Stones track "Gimme Shelter" for the British charity "Putting Our House In Order". The idea behind the project was for unlikely recording artists to each record duets of the Stones classic which would then be released on one of four genre-specific singles (rock, alternative, dance, and pop) in order to raise funds and awareness about the homelessness crisis in the UK. The Somerville/Beehive collaboration ended up being included on the 'pop' version of the single release, which, unlike the other three genre versions, was only issued on cassette, making it one of the rarest of VOTB tracks. Sadly, due to poor marketing and a confusing release launch, the charity record was somewhat of a bust with the singles reaching only a collective peak of #23 on the UK singles chart and then suffering an immediate eviction the following week. "Gimme Shelter" indeed.
