Jazz Classics: Dizzy Gillespie - A Night In Tunisia
hip hop fans should recognize the very beginning of this song as one of the many samples in Gang Starr's 1989 debut single "Words I Manifest." this track is simply amazing. everything from Dizzie's amazing trumpet playing to the infectious sound of the vibes that are sprinkled throughout the track. Dizzie Gillespie is famous for being one of the founders of Bebop, modern (along with Charlie Parker) and Cuban influenced Jazz. he died in January of 1993 but left his legacy behind. the pictures on this video show his face looking like that of a blowfish. his face looked like this because he never had any formal instruction on playing the trumpet but learned to play it anyways which damaged his face. you may recognize the style of trumpet he is playing; horn pointing upward. this was his signature and he was the very first to do this. he is also considered by many the first ever beat nick. enjoy.
Dizzy Gillespie - "Salt Peanuts" - 1947
Dizzy played for Lucky Millinder's band in the early '40s. It was a riff this band played, after a Dizzy solo in the tune "Little John Special", that Dizzy developed into his tune "Salt Peanuts". who are the sidemen here? Is that Max Roach on drums, TheApeLad?
Dizzy Gillespie - Dream Band Jazz America
Loving portrait of Dizzy and his crack band performing at Lincoln Center in 1982. - In 1982, the master showman Dizzy Gillespie performed at Lincoln Center with his celebrated Dream Band, which brought together master musicians who had played with Dizzy or been influenced by him. Driven by the stellar drums of Max Roach, the Dream Band is on fire and Dizzy is fine form. Including amazing turns from Gerry Mulligan, Gillespie protg John Faddis, Milt Jackson, Paquito DiRiviera, Candido and more, this film shares some of the backstage love and respect the players had for Diz. The concert itself is filmed beautifully with many close ups of the players and their instruments, as well as catching the love and humor of Dizzy.

Dizzy Gillespie's Dream Band "Manteca"
Recorded in 1982 at Lincoln Center, captures legendary jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie performing with his Dream Band, consisting of a wide array of jazz music's finest musicians, many of whom worked with Gillespie during the evolutionary era of the early-'40s bebop period. It includes an all-star cast highlighted by pyrotechnic drum wizard Max Roach, Gillespie's protégé trumpeter Jon Faddis, and Modern Jazz Quartet cofounders John Lewis (piano) and Milt Jackson (vibraphone). The leader's crowd-pleasing persona, trademark puffy cheeks, and no-nonsense trumpet solos steal the show. Selections range from Gillespie's Afro-Cubop favorites "Manteca".
Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval,"Night in Tunisia"
This was a live recording of Dizzy and friends in Havana in 1985. "Night in Tunisia" was composed by Dizzy in 1942. In 1n 1985, Dizzy Gillespie returned to Cuba after an absence of 40 years. He was one of the first American jazz musicians to add Afro-Cuban elements to his music, and Cubans to his big band. Most notably, in the 40s, was percussionist, Chano Pozo. A then-young Arturo Sandoval (trumpet) and Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano) sit in with Dizzy's band. Bari sax player, Sayyd Abdul al-Khabbyr, is remarkable. Walter Davis is on in this number.Great fun!

Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker - A Night In Tunisia - Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945
I have a very special guest writer for you this week, Mr. Bill Strickland, founder of the wonderful non profit organization in Pittsburgh known as Manchester Bidwell which, 1) provides state of the art jobs training programs intended to give poor and otherwise disadvantaged adults the skills and direction they need to land meaningful, good-paying jobs that provide the foundation for a much brighter future, and 2) offers rigorous after school courses in the arts that light a creative fire in at-risk kids and inspire them to stay in school (a program known as Manchester Craftmens Guild). He is also the winner of the MacArthur Foundation genius grant among many other truly commendable accomplishments and awards. Sooo, youre probably wondering how I got such a legit guy to guest write for me. Well, I didnt really. Im simply snagging an excerpt from his book, titled Make the Impossible Possible, which I highly recommend you read. Enjoy! In the 1930s, a young saxophone player from Kansas City showed up on the stages of the best jazz clubs in New York, playing with such virtuosity that even the best jazz artists of the day could only shake their heads in awe. His name was Charlie Parker, and he became an overnight phenomenon. Now, I have to be honest; Im no fan of Charlie Parker the man. in many ways he was a mean, sometimes treacherous person, and his self-destructive tendencies and reckless abuse of drugs and alcohol eventually killed him at the age of thirty-four. But despite ...

Dana Gillespie - Where Blues Begins When the night comes down And the shadows fall That's when I need you most of all When the colors fade in the empty night That's when I need you to hold me tight When the echoes of love are whispered to the winds That's where blue (where blue) begins When I call your name with a hungry heart That's when those memories tear me apart When I play the game of "Let's pretend" I wonder when it will ever end When losers are weepers And the best man never wins That's where blue (where blue) begins That's where blue (where blue) begins Here is the bed in heartbreak hotel Here is the pillow that my head lies on Next to me is where you used to be But now there's only a blue horizon solo When losers are weepers and the best man never wins That's where blue (where blue) begins That's where blue begins (Where blue begins) That's where blue begins...

Peter Schiff on the Dismal Future of the US Economy
"We have to cut $1.5 trillion out of this year's budget," says investment advisor, author, and radio host Peter Schiff. Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Schiff at July's FreedomFest in Las Vegas. Schiff, whose most recent book is How and Economy Grows and Why it Crashes, says that the economic downturn of 2008 is only a mild preview of what's in store for the US economy in the future and predicts much higher unemployment and huge inflation over the next few years. The only way out of this mess, says Schiff, is for the government to get out of the way and let the inevitable market correction occur. "It would be painful to cut spending by that degree," he acknowledges, "but not nearly as painful as it's going to be if we don't cut spending by that degree." Shot by Jim Epstein and Zach Weissmueller and edited by Zach Weissmueller. About 5 minutes long. Go toreason.tv for downloadable versions and subscribe to Reason.tv's YouTube Channel to receive automatic notifications when new material goes live. Held every July in Las Vegas, FreedomFest is an annual gathering of about 2000 free-market and libertarian enthusiasts. This year's speakers included Reason's Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch, Sen. Rand Paul, Judge Andrew Napolitano, and scores of others. Reason.tv conducted interviews with more than two dozen speakers, which we'll be releasing over the next several weeks.
