German clashes: May Day rallies turn violent in Berlin
Left wing protesters clashed with police in Berlin as a traditional May Day demonstration came to a halt far before reaching its intended end in the city center. Some demonstrators threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at the riot police, and officers responded with charges and batons. Arrests were made. The thousands strong demonstration had set off late on Tuesday afternoon from Berlin's neighborhood of Kreuzberg. Meanwhile in Hamburg, over one-thousand leftist activists gathered for the annual May Day protest march, local media reported. The demonstration - themed "No Alternative to Revolution" - saw protesters marching from St. Pauli to Ottensen. Right at the start, protesters threw fireworks at police officers, but the crowd remained mostly calm for the ensuing march. However, after a speech marking the end of the demonstration, violence erupted. Stones and bottles were thrown at the policemen escorting the march. Police responded employing pepper spray and arresting several protesters. Injuries were reported on both sides. As late as 13:35 the German 352nd division was reporting that the assault had been hurled back into the sea. From their vantage point at Pointe de la Percée overlooking the whole of the beach from the western end the German perception was that the assault had been stopped at the beach. An officer there noted that troops were seeking cover behind obstacles and counted ten tanks burning. However, as early as 07:35 the third battalion 726th Grenadier Regiment, defending Draw F-1 on Fox Green beach, was reporting that 100--200 American troops had penetrated its front, with enemy inside the wire at WN-62 and WN-61 under attack from the rear. Casualties amongst the defenders were mounting and at the same time that the 916th regiment, defending the centre of the 352nd zone, was reporting that the landings had been frustrated, it was also requesting reinforcement. The request could not be met because the situation elsewhere in Normandy was becoming more urgent for the defenders.

German hackers discover government spying
The German Chaos Computer Club has uncovered two recent instances of police using trojan spying programs on the computers of suspects they later arrested. The programs allowed remote users to take over webcams, listen in on internet phone calls and take screenshots every 30 seconds. All that would exceed the laws currently on the books in Germany, which only allow authorities to tap computers for phone calls. Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said the government would re-examine the software it was using but that internet telephone monitoring would continue. Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports from Berlin.

"Das Deutschlandlied" - Germany National Anthem German & English lyrics
"Das Deutschlandlied" German & English Lyrics This video contains the longer version of the German Anthem. Das Deutschlandlied ("The Song of Germany"; German pronunciation: [ˈdɔʏtʃlantˌliːt], also known as "Das Lied der Deutschen" or "The Song of the Germans"), has been used wholly or partially as the national anthem of Germany since 1922. The music was written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 as an anthem for the birthday of the Austrian Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of "Das Lied der Deutschen" to Haydn's melody, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time. The song is as well-known by the opening words and refrain of the first stanza, "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above all), but this has never been its title. The line "Germany, Germany above all" meant that the most important goal of the Vormärz revolutionaries should be a unified Germany overcoming the perceived anti-liberal Kleinstaaterei. Alongside the Flag of Germany it was one of the symbols of the March Revolution of 1848. In order to endorse its republican and liberal tradition, the song was chosen for national anthem of Germany in 1922, during the Weimar Republic. Out of similar reasons in 1952, West Germany adopted the Deutschlandlied as its official national anthem, with only the third stanza sung on official occasions.
