Fighting Two New Vogtle Nuclear Reactors In Georgia (Dr. Caldicott IFYOULOVETHISPLANET.ORG)
ifyoulovethisplanet.org Dr. Helen Caldicott's websites: ifyoulovethisplanet.org http www.helencaldicott.com "Glenn Carroll on the urgency of fighting new nuclear power plants in Georgia" -- This week, Dr. Caldicott interviews long-time antinuclear activist Glenn Carroll, coordinator of Nuclear Watch South, headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Carroll has been committed to grass roots direct action for 25 years, ever since the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown in Russia inspired her to join efforts to stop Vogtle 1 and 2, a nuclear power plant in Waynesboro, Georgia. With a small group of volunteers, Carroll led Nuclear Watch South to shut the research reactor on the Georgia Tech campus in downtown Atlanta where the Olympic athletes were to be housed. She is the 2008 recipient of the Tides Foundation's Jane Bagley Lehmann award. In this conversation with Dr. Caldicott, Carroll explains the danger posed by the third and fourth reactors approved for construction at the Vogtle facility, and how utility company Georgia Power and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are overriding concerns about the environment and human health in order to built the first new nuclear power plants in the US in several decades. Be sure to watch a 2010 segment on Democracy Now featuring Carroll, Anti-Nuclear Activists Mobilize to Oppose Obama-Funded Construction of Georgia Nuke Plants. www.democracynow.org Read more about reasons to oppose new nuclear plants at Vogtle. www.nonukesyall.org Check out the April 2012 ...

Another record-breaking facility opened for Sochi 2014
The athletes have given the thumbs up to the latest venue completed for the Sochi Winter Olympics. The Sanki Center boasts the longest track in the world for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. Located in the Western Caucasus -- 60 kilometres from the Black Sea resort of Sochi, the venue will host the bobsleigh luge, and skeleton events for the 2014 Winter Olympics At 1814 meters, it's the longest artificial track anywhere, and it was built in just two years. The venue is unique for Russia. There have been just 14 tracks worldwide fully approved by the sports' international federation and the complex in Sochi becomes the newest. The latest high-tech refrigeration technology will ensure accurate and constant monitoring of the temperatures along the entire sub-zero speedway. "First we put ice on the tack and then we grind every centimetre to reduce friction and increase speed," Viktor Pryadein, Olimpstroi Vice-President, said. "And only then the athletes start to slide down starting from the lowest mark gradually going up the track confirming its safety. And finally make starts from the very top." It's been designed for the three Olympic high-speed ice disciplines, with 16 turns and a maximum speed of around 135 kilometres per hour. That's a recent reduction however for safety reasons -- a major issue now. The athletes have already examined the run for the first time, ahead of a wide-ranging testing programme intended to avoid a repeat of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili's ...

APOSTASY
Apostasy (1996), a temporary installation by artists Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel, was conceived for the occasion of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. The juxtaposed flags suggested the eternal dialog between politics and peace. The metamorphic human figures suggested the casting aside of politicized reality where artificial, contrived paradigms were the rule and surrendering to the very essence of nature. The work inspired curiosity and then introspection about how the Olympic athletes cast off their political divisions as they attempted to transcend all boundaries of human endurance and skill. Apostasy first drew the viewer with a very tall pole upon which were hoisted two extraordinarily large flags. The flags flew together at the same height. One flag was completely white -- the color of peace, surrender and purity. The other flag, framed in black, was a composite of the 197 flags of the political entities represented at the Olympics. Fifteen topiary figures were dispersed throughout the rooftops surrounding Woodruff Park. Poised on parapet edges facing down toward the urban green and dancing flags below, the figures stood with upraised arms in a gesture that suggested both surrender and exhilaration.
