Hak5 - Internet Enabled Garage Door Opener Mod
This week we're breaking out the breadboard for an oldschool Hak5 mod -- the Internet enabled garage door opener. Because when it comes to garage entry, what could be easier than writing an Android app to access a home Apache server, hitting a PHP script that interfaces with a USB Teensy over serial, activating relays connected to a remote. Duh.
Build a Garage, Workshop, Pole Barn, House
Socket Systems manufactures the metal joinery system called Lumber Link. This 3-16" steel "socket", joins 6"x 6" rough-cut timbers or wood members, to create a clear span building frame. The standard Lumber Link kit can create a clear span area up to 30 feet wide. Extensions of 15 feet on each side will make the building 60 feet wide. The 6" x8" Hercules fixture can build clear spans up to 60 ft. wide with certain requirements. We also supply steel rafters with pre-welded purlin clips in a variety of pitches. Maison garage: old parking as tiny home in Bordeaux, France
Jérémie Buchholtz wanted an affordable apartment in Bordeaux (he's a photographer who splits his time between Paris and Bordeaux so his budget was limited), but he wasn't finding anything he liked. Then he stumbled upon a listing for a garage. There was no house, it was just an abandoned garage for sale. And it looked like one. It had big metal doors that blocked out any sunlight and inside it was being used more as a junk room. So Buchholtz called his friend and architect Matthieu de Marien who specializes in converting stores, offices and other spaces into homes. De Marien took one look at the historic street and recognized it as something special. Passage Buhan is a private passageway where the owners each own half of the road so life extends into the street. And the history here is rich: a couple centuries ago, the laneway housed horses and their riders en route to the then city of Bordeaux and the old stable still sits on the street. Buchholtz bought the property and De Marien quickly cut into the old garage to create more light and ventilation. The roof is historic and couldn't be touched so he carved a 12 square meter (129 square foot) patio out of the small space, leaving only 41 square meters of living space (441 square feet). In order to make the space feel larger, De Marien created a "house within a house": one large piece of furniture that includes the bathroom, bedroom, office, closet, a sofa bed and all of the home's storage. Although a crude electric carriage was originally created in Scotland in the late 1830s, the first functional electric car in the United States was produced in 1891. For the next decade, the clean, quiet electric car was the king of the road. In 1899, an electric car broke the vehicular land speed record, and by 1900, there were more electric cars than any other kind in the US, accounting for 38% of the nations car market. Jay still uses his Bakers original Edison batteries. In 1898, the same year that gasoline-powered vehicles first appeared, automotive innovator Walter C. Baker started the Baker Motor Vehicle Company in Cleveland, Ohio to produce his electric cars. His company went on to manufacture more electric vehicles than any other company in history, despite the fact that it ceased production of them in 1916. Baker presented the first ever shaft-driven automobile at the first American auto show at Madison Square Garden, and is said to have sold his first electric car to Thomas Edison, who developed its batteries. Jay still uses his 1909 Bakers original Edison batteries. He just washes them out occasionally and refills them, and they work fine. The essentially maintenance-free Baker Electric was a high coupe with carriage styling, brass fittings and tillers instead of steering wheels.
