Galaxies - Owl city with lyrics and in HQ! Latest single from the upcoming album 'All things bright and beautiful' by Owl City. For promotion purposes only! No copyright intended! Lyrics: Call back the cap-com, Tick off the time-bomb, Let felicity fly! Armour the airlock, Blanket the bedrock, And kiss the planet goodbye! Dear God, I was terribly lost, When the galaxies crossed, And the Sun went dark. Dear God, You're the only North Star, I would follow this far. [ Lyrics from: www.lyricsmode.com ] Fight back the flight deck, Bring on the breakneck, Cue the solar eclipse! Summit the sunset, Dubtail the dragnet, And blow your backbone to bits! Dear God, I was terribly lost, When the galaxies crossed, And the Sun went dark. Dear God, You're the only North Star, I would follow this far. Oh telescope, keep an eye on my only hope, Lest I blink and be swept off the narrow road. Hercules, you've got nothing to say to me, 'Cause you're not the blinding light that I need. For He is the saving grace of the Galaxies! He is the saving grace of the Galaxies
The Most Distant Galaxies Ever Seen
In August, after the last repair mission on the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers directed its newest camera towards the same area of sky where just five years ago, the first Hubble Ultra Deep field image was made and recorded a new one - this time in the near-infrared, a wavelength invisible to the human eye. Over the course of four days, the camera shutter was open for one hundred seventy three thousand seconds and astronomers collected photons that had left their galaxies over 13 billion years ago. Sensitive to slightly longer wavelengths than its predecessors, the newly installed camera known as Wide Field Camera three recorded objects that are likely the oldest galaxies ever identified, having formed only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Here are the results. [Music montage and interlude, couple minutes (music: Daemon portal)] Hubble's new camera looks closer towards the Big Bang than any of the earlier cameras on the Hubble Space Telescope because it collects light from near-infrared wavelengths. The expansion of the universe stretches light from hot young stars in these very distant galaxies out of the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum and into near-infrared wavelengths, making them redder and invisible to the human eye. As we build instruments sensitive to longer and longer wavelengths, we are able to peer farther into the cosmos and each wavelength brings us views closer to the edge of the universe. When we focus our instruments ...

Planets, Stars, Nebulae, Galaxies - Universe Size Comparison 2009 [HD]
***READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ANYTHING*** This is the ultimate size comparison video that you can find on the internet in HD. Starts with the tinyest dwarf planets of our solar system, then continues with large planets, dwarf stars, stars giant/supergiant/hypergiant stars, nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies. There is the famous VY Canis Majoris rated as the biggest star known, but very few know that that the incredible IC 1101 is the largest known object in the entire universe. Only galaxy clusters are bigger than it. Hope you enjoy this one. FAQ: -Sizes are not 100% accurate as there is no way to directly measure them. -Star sizes may change in the future, and new stars may eventually appear into this biggest stars list -Song: Celtic Panpipes - Ride on

Also known as the Andromeda Galaxy, M31 is the largest and closest such galaxy to our own. It's more than 220000 light-years across and lies 2.5 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. Between May 25 and July 26, 2008, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) acquired 330 images of M31 at wavelengths of 192.8, 224.6, and 260 nanometers. The images represent a total exposure time of 24 hours. Some 20000 ultraviolet sources are visible in the image, including M32, a small galaxy in orbit around M31. Dense clusters of hot, young, blue stars sparkle in the disk beyond the galaxy's smooth, redder central bulge. Star clusters are especially plentiful along a ring about 150000 light-years across.

Supermassive Black Hole in the Milky Way Galaxy
Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com From a distance, our galaxy would look like a flat spiral, some 100000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxys center. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important, something strange is going on in there. Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole. From a distance, our galaxy would look something like this. A flat spiral, some 100000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxy's center. That center -- bulging up and out of the galactic disk -- is tightly packed with stars. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of this so-called "bulge." And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important...something strange... is going on in there. The first to take notice was the physicist Karl Jansky back in the 1930s. He was asked by his employer, Bell Telephone Labs, to investigate sources of static that might interfere with what it saw as the killer app of its time... radio voice transmissions. Using this ungainly radio receiver... Jansky methodically ...

How Can Galaxies Travel Faster Than Light?
Get Astronomy tweets here twitter.com Probably my biggest regret when I made the Hubble Deep Field in 3D video is saying the phrase "these galaxies are racing away from us, in some cases faster than light". I had originally thought I was being clever and the comment would spur discussion. instead there was no discussion, only name calling and I mightily regretted putting it in there. The Most Distant Galaxy Ever Measured
www.facebook.com ... ESOcast 22: The most distant galaxy ever measured. An international team of astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) has measured the distance to the most remote galaxy so far. By carefully analysing the very faint glow of the galaxy they have found that they are seeing it when the Universe was only about 600 million years old (a redshift of 8.6). These are the first confirmed observations of a galaxy whose light is clearing the opaque hydrogen fog that filled the cosmos at this early time. --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Clearing the Cosmic Fog: The Most Distant Galaxy Ever Measured "Using the ESO Very Large Telescope we have confirmed that a galaxy spotted earlier using Hubble is the most remote object identified so far in the Universe", says Matt Lehnert (Observatoire de Paris) who is lead author of the paper reporting the results. "The power of the VLT and its SINFONI spectrograph allows us to actually measure the distance to this very faint galaxy and we find that we are seeing it when the Universe was less than 600 million years old." Studying these first galaxies is extremely difficult. By the time that their initially brilliant light gets to Earth they appear very faint and small. Furthermore, this dim light falls mostly in the infrared part of the spectrum because its wavelength has been stretched by the expansion of the Universe — an effect known as redshift. To ...

Planet From Another Galaxy Discovered
www.facebook.com ... ESOcast 24: First planet of extragalactic origin An exoplanet orbiting a star that entered our galaxy, the Milky Way, from another galaxy has been detected by a European team of astronomers using the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. The Jupiter-like planet is particularly unusual, as it is orbiting a star nearing the end of its life and could be about to be engulfed by it, giving clues about the fate of our own planetary system in the distant future. --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Planet From Another Galaxy Discovered - The first planet of extragalactic origin In this episode we are going to find out how an act of galactic cannibalism has brought a planet from another galaxy within astronomers' reach. Astronomers have detected nearly 500 planets orbiting stars in our cosmic neighbourhood, but none outside our Milky Way has been confirmed. Now, however, a planet weighing at least 1.25 times as much as Jupiter has been discovered orbiting a star of extragalactic origin, even though the star now finds itself within our own galaxy. The star, which is known as HIP 13044, lies about 2000 light-years from Earth and is part of the so-called Helmi stream. This stream of stars originally belonged to a dwarf galaxy, which was devoured by our Milky Way in an act of galactic cannibalism six to nine billion years ago. Astronomers detected the planet by looking ...

Black Holes and Galaxies: Professor Reinhard Genzel at ANU, July 2009
Evidence has been accumulating for several decades that many galaxies harbor central mass concentrations that may be in the form of black holes with masses between a few million to a few billion time the mass of the Sun. In this public lecture, Professor Genzel discusses measurements over the last two decades, employing high resolution infrared and radio imaging and spectroscopy on large ground-based telescopes that prove the existence of such a massive black hole in the centre of our Milky Way, beyond any reasonable doubt. These data also provide key insights into its properties and environment. Future interferometric studies of the Galactic Center black hole promise to be able to test gravity in its strong field limit. Professor Genzel also briefly summarizes the cosmological evolution of massive black holes. This event is brought to you by the Australian Institute of Physics and the Black Hole Society, and took place on Monday 27 July 2009.
