Usually, when you hear about people who dress up like life-sized stuffed animals, it's in the context of an unfriendly internet joke, a sex gag on Entourage, or an insult that ends with "yiff in hell." But Brooklyn-based filmmaker Marianne Shaneen has spent more than two years following these people around, capturing their lives in and out of their "fursonas." She's working on a documentary film called AMERICAN FURRY: Life, Liberty and the Fursuit of Happiness. Today on Boing Boing tv, an exclusive peek at this feature in progress. Marianne provided us with access to some of her raw footage (she's accumulated 2+ years' worth!), and we selected clips, edited, added some audio, and produced the short glimpse you'll see here. Heather Fox - Furry Cartoon
There once was a time when furry fandom was just a loosely organized offshoot of comic/sci-fi/fantasy fandom dedicated to animal characters in movies, TV, comics and video games. There once was a time when there were no anti-social elitist/seperatist furries using the term "human" with the same hate-filled tone of voice the KKK uses the word "nigger", and there were no anti-furry hatemongerers screaming "Yiff in Hell". There once was a time when furry fandom was fun. But somewhere along the line a lot of furry fans started taking themselves much too seriously. Over the years they turned furry fandom into a sub-culture, almost like a cult. And like any cult it garnered alot of hateful backlash. And that backlash compelled them to bizarre acts which incurred more hate which lead to even more bizarre behavior... There once was a time when I was much more involved in the fandom. And inspired by Eric Schwartz' animated cartoon "A Walk In The Park" (which has been uploaded several times to YouTube) I tried my hand at animation, and eventually I created my first animated cartoon, "Heather Fox", way back in 1998...back when furry fandom was fun. I miss those days of long ago.

Filmed at Midwest Furfest 2010, a major furry convention, the fandom is explained by furries in their own words. This project was both a personal and an academic undertaking. G4TV's ATOS Footage @ Furry Weekend Atlanta 2011
'Attack of the Show' came to visit FWA, the anthropomorphic convention of downtown Atlanta, GA. Sara Underwood took to the convention with her cam crew and I got to land a spot in one of her interviews at 1:40 while wearing a friend's fursuit. I also appeared in the Parade footage at 0:32 with EagleBeagle. The convention is held at the Sheraton Hotel. This took place March 17th - 21st. Got in the parade footage right in the middle! The 'Hip Fox' character was my friends suit, but I was loaning it from him throughout the convention. The next FWA convention has been themed 'Moulin Rouge' and it is going down in 2012.
