Now plagued by gangs and crime, it has become central to the heated election debates around immigration and security. Generations of immigrants have helped to shape the character of Marseilles and a third of the population are Muslim. But recently an explosion in violent crime has torn apart this melting pot, exacerbated by the recent killings in Toulouse by Islamist, Mohammed Merah, and Sarkozy's controversial anti-halal campaign. "An election doesn't justify being demagogic. It is dividing France, playing people off against each other." 'France robbed of choice and sovereignty'

RT talks to the French writer an activist Alain Soral who is considered a controversial figure in his home country because he holds views which more often than not challenge the status quo and raises topics considered taboo. RT: What is it that you dislike so much about the status quo in France that you feel compelled to go against? Alain Soral: First of all, today, we can no longer believe in the masquerade of a political left and right. For a long time here in France, unlike Anglo-Saxon countries -- even Germany and the United States -- there was a real alternative in French politics, meaning there was the Communist Party and there was the whole movement of economic liberalism. There was real political diversity in France. But gradually, the so-called "left" eventually gravitated towards economic liberalism -- the right. The only differences between the left and the right were small variations in their positions on ethics and society. The best example is, right now, we have Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. There's no real opposition between left and right. It doesn't exist. They are all roughly economic liberals, libertarians. For France, the first step of visible liberalism is the European Union. There are those who submit to the EU, which means the end of borders, free movement of goods and capital, ideology of right and left, the ideology of miscegenation. This is the dominant ideology in France shared by left and right. The difference is only aesthetic. And ...

France in mourning after "serial sniper" attck

www.euronews.com France is trying to come to terms with the gunning down of three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse yesterday - and the idea that what has been described as a "serial sniper" is on the loose. It is thought the person who opened fire on the schoolchildren was also behind the shooting of three soldiers in two separate incidents last week. It has been reported the gunman was wearing a camera which may have been used to record the bloodshed. When questioned on this point, France's Interior Minister Claude Guéant, confirmed a witness had described seeing video recording equipment, adjusted using straps, around the shooter's neck. Officers in Toulouse, where the latest killings occured, are on the highest level of terrorism alert and security has been stepped up around all major religious sites. More than 200 police have been drafted in to track the killer. They have not named a suspect but say they are looking for a man believed to be a trained marksman. In all three incidents, the gunman arrived on a stolen scooter and used a Colt .45. In the school shooting, he fled on a Yamaha motorbike. France outlaws Armenian Genocide denial

Turkey has vowed to retaliate, after the French Senate approved a bill making it a crime to deny that the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman empire in 1915, was genocide. Ankara has already suspended military, political and economic ties with Paris. Both houses of the French parliament have passed the bill, which still has to be signed off by President Sarkozy in order to become law. The proposal is set to make the denial of genocide and war crimes, recognized by French law, punishable by up to a year in prison. Turkey denies the massacre, that's considered by many to be the 20th century's first genocide. The executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America, Aram Hamparian, says the measure will force Ankara to admit to the atrocities.
