Building A Forge (See Discription)
(((((WEB SITE CHANGED)))))) www.myerstownfarm.com I am not only a person who loves music but I also like to make things. I am starting to learn blacksmithing and I am building my forge. The metal I used was too thin so I rendered some clay and sand to line it with. Thought I would put a little fiddle music with it also to entertain the music enthusiasts. The tunes are Finley Creek blues and Louisville Breakdown. **********UPDATE************ So many people have been asking about the construction of this forge I figured I'd add it to the description. This was made with an old hot water tank. I dug up some Ozarks red clay from my place and sifted it as shown in the video to remove all rock and other fragments. This method also gets the clay to one consistency. Let the clay dry in a wheel barrel. The dry powdery material is just sand. The sand is sifted (as shown in the video) and added to the really wet clay (thus drying the clay enough to knead) on a sheet of plywood. Then add dried grass clippings to the mix before kneading (I didn't show this in the video...sorry it was an adjustment to the original plan). The grass is needed to prevent large cracks in the clay as it dries. The ratio for the mixture is 1 of Clay:Sand:Grass clippings. *****CHANGES TO THE DESIGN***** After using this forge for 3 years I would change a few things. First, the depth of the tank is too much! I wouldn't make the tank any deeper than 2 to 3 inches. The Fire pot only needs to be 2 inches deep and ...

Blacksmith Forged Titanium Knife
Randy McDaniel shows the forging of a titanium knife. Edited down to show the main points in order to fit in less than the 10 minute format. After showing how he forged a titanium sword on YouTube a lot of comments were received about this material and how it is forged and how it holds up. Hopefully this will clear up some of the myths of this material and allow people to have fun with it. Tal Harris adds: titanium will burn if you get the heat high enough. It especially likes to react with iron scale in a gas furnace at high temperatures. Putting water on burning titanium is not good. Baking soda is the preferred extinguisher. A class D fire extinguisher is a good thing to have around. When water is applied to a titanium fire, the reaction disassociates the hydrogen from the oxygen, thus making a bigger fire in an uncontrolled manner. The grinding dust will also burn. There are also quite a few alloys of titanium, some with phase changes at certain temperatures and some without. This can make a BIG difference on how the piece reacts to forging. Knowing what businesses there are in your area could give clues as to what alloy you are finding. Chemical processing equipment frequently uses CP or commercially pure titanium. Aerospace applications get into other alloys with 6-4 (6% aluminum-4% vanadium) being the most common. How to Forge a Sword - Part 1 Tang and Drawing out
www.stormthecastle.com This is part 1 of a series of tutorials on how to forge a sword. I will cover the entire process from beginning to end. In this part I show you how to get started. We forge out the tang (handle) of the sword and we draw out the blade to make it longer without making it any wider. About the Steel I use. I am using 01 steel which is great for knives but is just ok for swords. If you have a choice of steels I recommend you go with 5160. You can also use the leaf spring from a car. Can get it at a junk yard. This is usually 5160.
