World's first manned flight with an electric multicopter
On October 21st, 2011, Thomas Senkel of e-volo made the first manned flight with an electric multicopter, the so called volocopter VC1, at an airstrip in the southwest of Germany. The flight lasted 90 seconds, after which the constructor and test pilot stated: "The flight characteristics are good natured. Without any steering input it would just hover there on the spot". You'll see during the flybys why the Japanese called this fighter the "Whistling Death." This aircraft just leaps off the runway in just a few seconds, and remember, the manifold pressure used today for takeoff with 100-octane low-lead fuel is not anywhere near what could be used with the wartime, 130-octane+ fuel. PAL-V Flying Car - Maiden Flight
This week the Dutch company PAL-V announced the first flights of its prototype "flying car". This unique vehicle is called the PAL-V One, or the 'Personal Air and Land Vehicle', and It marks the start of a new era. On the ground the vehicle drives like a sports car. Within minutes its rotor is unfolded and its tail is extended: then it is ready to take off thanks to the advanced gyrocopter technology. With these successful test results it is proven that it is not only possible to build a flying car but also that it can be done within existing international rules for both flying and driving. Having passed this important milestone the company is now inviting investors to join them in creating the future. The next step will be the design of the first commercial production model of the PAL-V, and first deliveries are expected in 2014. 'Russian Stealth' 1st public flight: Sukhoi PAK FA T-50 at MAKS airshow

The Sukhoi-made plane took to the skies for a 8-minute show. The jet's said to be equipped with some of the most advance avionics on the planet. It will be able to land on short runways and fly in any weather. It can carry up to eight medium range or two long-range missiles in its two internal bays. The jet's first prototype performed its maiden flight last January, and carried out 36 test flights. The fifth generation fighter's expected to enter service in Russia in 2015. The price tag is estimated at US $100 million.

Satellite imagery, elevation models and robust GIS mapping methods are utilized to create a vegetation model, terrain model and ground clutter (3D buildings). Of all available audio tracks, only two are used, La Guardia Tower and New York TRACON Departure controller position. Radar data as well as the onboard Flight Data Recorder are utilized in constructing the flightpath of the aircraft. Martin Jetpack 5000ft flight - highlights
To demonstrate flight high above the ground and the concept of the ballistic parachute as an emergency safety system, the Martin Jetpack was flown to around 1500m (5000ft), brought down from this height and an off-the-shelf ballistic parachute was deployed.The aircraft was flown by James via radio control in a chasing helicopter - also demonstrating the ability of the technology to apply to UAV applications. Jetson, Martin Aircraft Company's weighted dummy was on board, and the parachute was placed out front for visibility and weight balancing.The video features inventor Glenn Martin and RC pilot James Bowker. The jetpack ascended initially at 4m/s (800ft/min) and the climb took about 6 minutes. The parachute was deployed at around 3000ft above ground level. The aircraft sustained some damage on impact, but we would expect that it is likely a pilot would have walked away from this emergency landing. The total flight was just under 10 minutes.

Flight Assembled Architecture
Yesterday night the first installation to be built by flying machines opened its doors to the public. An hour or so after the Opening, after most of the crowd had gone to drink champagne in the building next door, I snuck upstairs and recorded a few short clips of the quadrocopters. The installation, called "Flight Assembled Architecture", was conceived and built by teams led by my colleagues Fabio Gramazio & Matthias Kohler as well as Raffaello D'Andrea at the ETH Zurich. It illustrates a radically new way of thinking about materializing architecture: Use a multitude of mobile flying agents working in parallel and acting together as a scalable production means. As you can see in the video, the quadrocopters are programmed to interact, lift, transport and assemble small modules in order to erect a building. The tower is actually a 1:100 model of a "vertical village" with a height of 600 meters and housing 30'000 inhabitants. World record flight at Red Bull Flugtag Minneapolis St Paul 2010
