Invasive Asian Carp impacting commercial fishing industry
Commercial fishing is a multi-billion dollar industry in the Great Lakes region of the United States. More than 800000 people are employed in the industry, a way of life for many that could be threatened by the invasive Asian Carp. As efforts continue to keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes, VOA's Kane Farabaugh looks at how the spread of the fish in Illinois waterways is already impacting commercial fisherman.
Loss of the Fishing Vessel Gaul 1974 United Kingdom
The commercial fishing industry consistently experiences one of the highest occupational fatality rates in the country. In 2006, commercial fishermen had the most dangerous job in the United States, with an annual fatality rate that was 36 times greater than the rate of all US workers. The fishing vessel Gaul was a deep sea factory ship based at Hull, United Kingdom. She sank some time on the night of the 8-9 February 1974 in storm conditions in the Barents Sea, north of Norway. Thirty-six crew were lost in the worst peacetime disaster to befall the UK fishing fleet. The original Formal Investigation in 1974 concluded that the most likely reason for her loss was that she was overwhelmed by a succession of very large waves in heavy seas and capsized. A new investigation in 2004 concluded that open chutes, doors and hatches had compromised the ship's watertight integrity and, combined with a following (and as already noted, heavy) sea led to flooding on the factory deck. An attempted emergency manoeuvre by the officer of the watch (a perfectly logical move to try to turn 'into the sea') catastrophically deprived Gaul of her stability as floodwater freely moved around and buoyancy was lost, thus causing her to capsize and sink very rapidly, stern first. For more information on the severe hazards faced by workers in commercial fishing and methods for improving safety, go to the US NIOSH Commercial Fishing Safety website at www.cdc.gov . Oil Spill Puts Fisheries, Birds at Risk Along US Gulf Coast
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http In May, American officials suspended all fishing in parts of the Gulf of Mexico because of the huge oil spill. The restrictions gave scientists time to study the effects on seafood in the gulf. The order extended from the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana east to waters of Pensacola Bay in Florida. The affected waters include areas off the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama. On April twentieth an oil drilling rig, the Deepwater Horizon, exploded and sank about eighty kilometers from the Louisiana coast. BP is trying different ways to stop the leak from a damaged undersea well and control the spilled oil. The chief of British Petroleum blames failures by the rig's operator, Transocean of Switzerland. But BP says it will pay cleanup costs and all "legitimate claims" for losses and damages from the spill. BP is also hiring local fishing boats to help with the cleanup. Eighty percent of the seafood eaten by Americans is imported. But the fishing industry in Louisiana is responsible for about a third of all seafood caught in the United States. The fishing ban did not affect state waters west of the Mississippi River. Those waters represent seventy-seven percent of Louisiana's total seafood production. Ewell Smith from the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board says seafood from the unaffected area is safe to eat. Seafood is worth nearly two and a half billion dollars to the ...
Obama pledges action against oil spill
Barack Obama, the US president, has promised "to do whatever it takes" to stop the oil slick that emanated from a damaged rig from devastating the country's gulf coast, which he called a "massive and potentially unprecedented disaster". Obama made the comments after holding talks on the crisis with officials in Louisiana, one of the four states threatened by the slick. The president also acknowledged that the spill could be disastrous for the fishing industry in the region, which has prime spawning waters for fish, shrimp and crabs. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from Venice in Louisiana, where the fishing industry has been hit hard by the disaster. [May 3, 2010]

Commercial Fishing Dangers in Alaska 1995 NIOSH
Alaska's commercial fishermen work in one of the world's harshest environments and experience conditions that have a strong impact on their safety. One-third (346) of all work-related deaths that took place in Alaska during 1990-2008 occurred to fishermen. This results in an annual fatality rate that is 26 times greater than the rate for all US workers (129 and 4 per 100000 workers per year, respectively). While the work-related fatality rate for commercial fishermen in Alaska is still very high, it has decreased by 42 percent since the early 1990. Safety improvements in Alaska occurred as a result of a combination of activities including safety regulations, and fishery-specific interventions focusing on unique hazards of each fishery. Safety regulations in commercial fishing largely began with the passing of the Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act (CFIVSA) in 1988. This gave authority to the United States Coast Guard to develop basic lifesaving regulations for commercial fishing vessels, including requirements to carry emergency equipment such as life rafts and immersion suits. NIOSH evaluated the impact of CFIVSA on fatalities in Alaska and found that the safety requirements contributed to 94% of the commercial fishermen surviving vessel sinkings/capsizings from 1997-1999, in comparison to a 77% survival rate in 1991-1993. The survival rate from 1991-1999 steadily improved following the implementation of CFIVSA . For more details on these findings please refer ...
Cod: The Fish that Made New England | Pew
Nothing tells a story like the eyewitnesses who were there. Old-timers in New England's commercial cod fishery don't want us to forget how we arrived where we are today. These "old salts" remember vastly different conditions in the fishing industry just a few decades ago. In the words of one of them, "it was the most fantastic fishery I ever saw." Since then, overfishing—catching fish faster than they can reproduce—continues to deplete 10 of our dinner-time favorites, including Atlantic cod. An International Treaty Targets Fishing Abuses
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com Some pirates catch fish instead of ships. The problem is known as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Such fishing harms the productivity of fisheries, and hurts developing countries especially. The fish pirates can easily land in ports that are not well controlled. Then they sell their catch at prices too low for the local fishing industry to compete. The catch may enter international markets, yet rob communities of needed food and raise the risk of fishery collapse. In November, the governing conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization approved a new treaty. The agreement, once it takes effect, will be the first under international law to target this problem. It has a long name the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The FAO says that by signing the treaty, governments promise to take steps to guard their ports against ships involved in such fishing. The behavior of a fishing boat is mainly the responsibility of the nation whose flag it flies. The new treaty is directed at countries where fishing ships enter port. The aim is to get the countries to identify, report and deny entry to offending vessels. To land, foreign fishing ships will have to request permission from ports that are able to inspect them. And before they arrive, they will have to send information on their activities and ...

Tuna Fisheries in Indonesia Go Eco-Friendly
Tuna industries in Indonesia are turning to friendly fishing. The world tuna industry has been widely blamed for killing endangered sea life, such as turtles, sharks and sea birds. The sea-life killing culprits are the longline and purse seine nets they use. The nets drag and dredge the sea bed, taking everything along with the prized tuna, a staple in most menus. However, the Nutrindo fishery in Bitung, North Sulawesi in Indonesia is using the hand line rather than longline in their 25 boats for two weeks to one month. Fishery owner Hartono Tjandrason says the reason he chose the handline was to avoid catching in sealife except for tuna. [Hartono Tjandrason, Fishery Owner]: "In this fishing industry, we need development sustainability, resources sustainability. So, without resources we would not have development. We have to maintain this circle." His fishery exports a ton of yellow fin tuna to Japan daily and some 100 tons to United States a month. Bas Zaunbrecher, of ANOVA, a Netherlands-based tuna fishery that operates in Bali's waters says most of his customers in Japan and the US demand environmentally friendly seafood products. [Bas Zaunbrecher, ANOVA]: "More and more of our customers they require fish from sustainable sources. So it is actually a must for the future and also if things are not being controlled properly in the future, we will not have any resources anymore to buy our product from." His company's long line of fleets have replaced traditional J-shaped ...

Activists Say Fishing Limit Not Enough to Save Bluefin Tuna
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http An international group has set the limit for the two thousand eleven catch of bluefin tuna in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The limit is just under thirteen thousand metric tons. That is six hundred tons less than the two thousand ten quota, a reduction of four percent. Conservation groups criticized the move, saying the cut is not big enough to support the recovery of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas set the catch in November in Paris. Delegates to the commission represent the governments of forty-eight fishing nations. In two thousand six, the commission established a plan to stop overfishing. The goal is to rebuild bluefin populations in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean by twenty twenty-two. The European Commission had called for reducing the catch in two thousand eleven to six thousand tons to improve the chances for the huge and highly valuable fish. But Mediterranean members of the European Union rejected that proposal even before the ten-day meeting began. Still, EU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki said the meeting took "a step in the right direction for sustainable management" of bluefin tuna. The fishing industry wanted to keep the existing catch limit. Atlantic bluefin can grow three meters long and weigh as much as six hundred fifty kilograms. France, Italy and ...
Surf Fishing At Victoria's Desalination Plant 2008

The desalination plant's major impact on the marine environment will come from the warm brine that it will return to the ocean as waste , We already are aware that the desalinated water will be fluoridated but with which chemical ? Will it be highly dangerous fluoroslicic acid liquid ? We will never know Most desalination operations dump this highly concentrated salt brine back into the ocean. But unless this is done far offshore, it can negatively impact coastal marine habitats. Williamsons Beach is one of the best surf fishing locations in a reasonable proximity to Melbourne, The big concern for us in the fishing industry is the potential for what can go wrong.. Minister for Planning, Justin Madden, simply ignored the EES panel's recommendation that plant infrastructure should be located elsewhere,

Should anyone do this you are free to claim the video as yours to post anywhere so long as audio credits go to myself. Thanks. ************** Be a good consumer and never consider from what and where your food comes from or the impact your decisions have. Remember, our mantra is ignorance is bliss. ------------- Over 80% of a shrimp catch contains incidental bycatch. 20000000 tons of bycatch are thrown out each year. Aside from shark finning, the tuna industry kills 1000000 sharks each year. Blue fin tuna is nearly extinct. 300000 dolphins, whales, and porpoises die each year from bycatch as well. Approximately 300000 seabirds die every year in the Pacific from eating plastic. Fish farms take away 80% of prey items (sardines, pollack, mackerel, squid and anchovies) from predatory animals to be used as food at farms [therefore no, fish farms have a negative impact and offer zero solutions]. All of this and more... none of which includes the effects of industry and pollution. BP Oil Spill - It's time to Boycott
In response to the lack of responsibility that British Petroleum has shown to the recent Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010, We are asking all citizens of the United States to boycott BP and their gas stations. Americans are tired and feed up with big oil and big business thinking that they call the shots. It's time to hurt them where it will make the biggest impact, and that is in their profit margin. An estimated 56000 to 84000 barrels of oil a day are spilling out of the main leak and another leak has been found that has a suggested flow rate of 25000 barrels a day. Meanwhile coastal areas are already being affected by the spill and the loss of wages and profits on the part of the companies affected is in the millions headed towards billions. Loss of wildlife is already evident and this is being reported as the greatest disaster in US history. The longer we let these companies get away with a gross lack of responsibility, the worse it gets. So it's time that America shows them who pays the bills.
CITIZEN SOLDIER ~ THREE DOORS DOWN ~ DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL BLOWOUT
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred as BP oil spill,[5] Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and Macondo blowout) is a massive ongoing oil spill and oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico that started on April 20, 2010. The spill followed a blowout that caused an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig, which then sank off the coast of Louisiana.[2] Eleven rig workers are missing and presumed dead; the explosion also injured 17 others.[6] The oil spill covers a surface area of at least 2500 square miles (6500 km2) according to estimates reported on May 3, 2010 by CNBC.[3] The oil spill, originating from a deepwater oil well 5000 feet (1500 m) below sea level, is discharging an estimated 525 thousand barrels (210,0001,100000 US gallons; 790,0004,000000 litres) of crude oil daily.[7] The spill is expected to eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill as the worst US oil disaster in history.[8] Experts fear that it will result in an environmental disaster as the oil from the well site reaches the Gulf coast, damaging the Gulf of Mexico fishing industry, tourism industry, and habitat of hundreds of bird species.[9][10] Crews are working to block off bays and estuaries, using anchored barriers, floating booms, and sand-filled barricades along shorelines. BP was principal developer of the "Macondo Prospect" oil field and leased the drilling rig from Transocean Ltd.[11] The US Government has named BP as the responsible party in the incident and will hold the company ...

With many of the long term effects from the Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster still ahead of us, a serious consideration should be made regarding the food chain and the possible radioactive contamination thereof. In this example, let's look at Tuna fish. Is it safer to buy canned tuna now, before possible contamination into its food chain? They spawn in the Western Pacific between Okinawa and the Philippines and the Sea of Japan and they migrate over 6000 nautical miles to the Eastern Pacific, eventually returning back to their birth waters to spawn again. What do Tuna eat? Tuna mostly eat small fish ranging from 1.5 inches up to 6 inches. Tuna will also eat squid, and very occasionally will consume crustaceans. The small fish that tuna will eat include skipjack herring, flying fish, lancetfish, puffer fish, triggerfish and rabbitfish. 60% fish 20% squid 15% crustaceans If tuna eat smaller fish like Herring, then what do the Herring eat? Herring (aka trash fish) eat mostly plankton, as well as algae and some kelp. If tuna eat squid, then what do squid eat? Squids are carnivorous. The smaller species of squid mostly eat shrimp, and other small fish. How could radiation enter the fish food-chain? So now that we have an idea of what type of tuna is caught off ...
