Randolph Firefighter CLOSE CALL caught on the Fire Helmet Camera
Randolph NJ - Firefighter Allen Bell from Dover Fire Dept. in New Jersey captured this CLOSE CALL video of a firefighter who had to bail out of a 2nd floor window while conducting a search for a missing resident. As conditions worsened, the firefighter made it to a 2nd floor window and called out for a ladder. This put firefighter Bells RIT team into action by grabbing the nearest extension ladder to assist the firefighter. This video shows the firefighter falling from the window to the ground and other firefighters carrying him to the front of the house. This video should be used as a training tool. There are several training classes and videos offered that show proper technique in "ladder bail outs". You and your dept. should learn these techniques so this does not happen to you. His injuries were minor, but he could have suffered worse injuries. Also, the FC3 Fire Helmet Camera (www.FireVideo.net) was used in the video and shows that this camera can be another "tool for the helmet", and if used properly, can assist in training, review and investigation. Fire Fighter Freelanced Ventilation
The first arriving on scene was one engine, one truck, and one rescue. The first crew of three firefighters went in the front door ( side A ) to search for an elderly woman who was supposed to be home. One of the three search firefighters stayed at the front door when eventually a hose line was brought to that location to protect the egress, this was the only thing done correctly. The fire exposed itself on the C side of the structure, the IC did not do a 360 size up - when the firefighter took the windows the search crew was still in the building ( he vented on his own with no notification to IC or the interior crew ) The fire ball that erupted blew down the hallway where the interior crew was searching, they just managed to get back to the front door area and bail out. If the firefighter was not at the front door screaming to them they would have not made it out. No hose line made it into the building for well into 15 minutes after arrival. There was three additional engines on scene withing 5 minutes of first crews arrival. There were 30 firefighters there within 10 minutes of dispatch. There was no size up - There was no action plan created - firefighters freelanced throughout the fire - if a size up was done a hose line should have been brought directly to the rear and suppress the fire through the rear door of side C - Driver of the first engine could not pump the engine - the firefighter who took over for him didn't know where to hook up the 5" supply line. We are all sad at the news of Sam's passing however, it's important to note that Sam was put to sleep due to a condition unrelated to the Bushfires. Her condition was 'urogenital chlamydiosis' and is caused by a infection of the intracellular bacteria in the genus Chlamydia, which is transmitted via sexual activity and also vertically to offspring. The Queensland University of Technology is developing a vaccine for the bacterial infection which is looking very promising in the trial phases. Before Green Fanatics get the chance to blame this on habitat destruction by 'invading' Europeans, let me say that researchers actually believe Chlamydia was bought into Australia by early Aboriginal tribes from Asia over 40000 years ago. It now affects approx 50% of the Koala population. The reason Sam was put down is because as the disease develops it can become quite painful.
