Taiwan bans shark finning

Taiwan, which has the fourth largest shark-fishing industry in the world, has passed a new law to ban shark-finning. The practice of cutting off the fins and throwing the bodies back into the sea has been blamed for the 80 per cent drop in shark populations. The ban, which is due to take effect next year, has been welcomed by conservationists but they say it does not go far enough. Al Jazeera's Tarek Bazley reports.

The Shark Conservation Act is a proposed bill that aims to put an end to shark finning in US waters and closes the loopholes that exist in previous shark finning legislation. Currently sharks are being finned primarily for the value of their fins which are then used in a soup symbolizing celebration and success. This bill will not only help by preventing interstate fin sales, but it will influence the entire market thought the Americas because California is the port of choice for the fin trade. Forcing finners to use other ports will make this wasteful practice much less profitable and therefore less appealing.
