FINGERSTYLE GUITAR: Simple Tips for Fingerstyle Songwriting

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: March 23, 2012 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've been asked to compose & then play a short fingerstyle guitar number at my sister's wedding this summer. I have some finger-picking experience, but not much. In regard to composing a piece, I've dabbled in that but never completed anything. Do you have a few suggestions for me on this? Niklas -- Lucerne, Switzerland A: If you have some basic technique with playing fingerstyle guitar then this lesson will most certainly offer you a few good basic tips for setting up a passage or two that should work well at your sister's wedding. A good thing to keep in mind is that finger-picked pieces that tend to work the best for ceremonies are generally; slow, simple, "major key" plucking patterns. It is good if they can sound uncomplicated and try not to draw anyone's direct attention to you. At a ceremony we'd prefer that the people attending keep their main attention on the ceremony, the wedding party & of course the bride. In the video lesson I run through a few easy concepts that you can apply right away to compose nice fingerstyle picking songs perfect for a ceremony. FINGERSTYLE GUITAR: Flamenco Rumba Guitar

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: January 06, 2012 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'm still just an Intermediate level guitarist, but I love the sound of Flamenco Guitar and in particular, "Rumba." I know advanced Flamenco guitar involves certain levels of technique. But, is there a basic Rumba piece and a few exercises you might be able to teach that could start me off? Ramonna -- Buenos Aires, Argentina A: Flamenco guitar is without a doubt very expressive and full of emotion. A large part of conveying that, "Correct Rumba Feeling," is very important. Of course, it goes without saying that an vital part of learning this, (or any other style), is spending ample time listening to a lot of authentic Flamenco music as much as you possibly can. In the video lesson, I'll be keeping things simple - doing my best to stay at the Intermediate playing level for those watching. Rumba is performed with a syncopated 2/4 rhythm. The rhythmic dynamic accents occur upon the 1st, 4th and 7th sixteenth-notes of the measure. Pay close attention to the rhythmic feel in the videos, Example #1). This is the vital element regarding Rumba. Get this down and everything else will slowly fall into place as well. Sungmin Lee: Big Bang - 'Blue' - Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Cover

Facebook fan page: www.facebook.com Twitter: www.twitter.com 'Blue' arranged by Sungmin Lee Hey guys! :D Here's my cover to one of Big Bang's new songs, 'Blue.' I recorded this a few days ago, but there was so much editing that I had to do that it took a while. :P Oh well, here it is now. :DI hope you guys enjoy it! I really had fun recording this. This is kind of a new thing that I might start getting into. I'll keep doing regular full out finger style covers, but I might do some more of these. However, although everything in here is not finger style, it was still all made with one guitar. No effects or anything were added. Well anyways, let me know what you guys think of this new style I'm approaching. :) I found this song because of my friend Colin Shin who is a great pianist in youtube. Look him up on the search box, and you'll find him. He made a cover too. :D Anyways, I fell in love with this song, and I decided to record it. So I started to record it last Sunday. At first, I felt discouraged to keep recording because I thought that my version was not going to sound that good. However, Big Bang has opened a contest for covers of their new songs Blue and Bad Boy, so I pushed on and continued to record this song. I uploaded it to their contest thing. Well anyways, thanks for watching, and I hope to see you guys soon! :D -Sungmin

Sungmin Lee: Kotaro Oshio - 'Splash' - Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Cover

'Splash' composed by Kotaro Oshio Hey guys! :D Here's my cover to Kotaro's composition, Splash. It's one of my all time favorites by him. :DI hope you guys enjoy(ed) it as much as I enjoyed playing it. (It may seem like I didn't enjoy it that much in the video, but that was cause I was really sleepy haha hopefully it didn't make everything seem so dark) xD I first started playing this almost 2 and a half years ago when I was inspired when seeing Sungha's first video, which was his cover of Splash. Honestly, I think he did a better job than me considering that he was only 9 years old, and that he was playing a hard song like this after playing the guitar for only a few months. I'm sure if he was to cover it again, he would do a much better job that I had. When I started playing this song, it was really difficult because there is a really unique technique that Kotaro uses called the nail attack. It's a technique where you strike the strings with your nails to make a percussive sound. Anyways, It was so foreign to me that I wasn't able to play this song, and a lot of other songs by him that included the nail attack technique. After a few months, I found this guy named SimplyLuo (Jon) on youtube. He's an amazing guitarist that has mastered the nail attack. He was generous enough to upload a tutorial of how to perform this technique. It took me a few months to learn it haha xD It was a really difficult process, but I think I can do it now. :) I'm not sure if it's correct ...

Adopting Classical Fingerstyle Technique

www.creativeguitarstudio.com SearchAndrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: March 11, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'm a little confused, because my first guitar teacher said that traditional American fingerpicking used the thumb and first two fingers. But, my new guitar teacher say's that the way to play proper fingerstyle is to use the thumb and first three fingers. They are both good teachers, but now I'm confused a bit. Overall, I'd like to get better with all three fingers & thumb -- so could you talk about a few exercises that I can practice to develop; thumb, index, middle and ring approach and maybe clear up the confusion about the conflicting statements by these two guitar teachers. - Dennis, Phoenix AZ. A: Your question compares the ideology of Classical technique to the traditional American fingerpicking technique. Classical technique requires the thumb, and first 3 fingers but traditional American fingerstyle only uses the thumb and first 2 fingers. When you listen to songs by; Merle Travis, Doc Watson, or John Hurt you'll get a traditional American approach, (that would be pretty tough to duplicate with the Classical technique). Now, for versatility -- it sounds like you want to step up to using the three finger technique from the Classical players. And, to move you in that direction I've created a series of excellent simple exercises ...

Sons of Skyrim/Dohvakiin - Acoustic solo fingerstyle guitar - Salomon Jakobsson

Here's my arrangement of this great tune. I'm not sure of it's name but decided to call it "Skyrim" because I made the arrangement from Skryrim's soundtrack even though I know that the Morrowind theme is used in it - but the Morrowind theme is actually in another key. I guess that makes this version (that's in B minor) the Skyrim one and the one in Morrowind (D minor) the Morrowind one. Update: Apperantly it's called "Sons of Skyrim"! Changed the title now. It's not perfect but it's the best one out of all takes I made (took about 1 1/2 hour). Well, it's not playback at least! It's LIVE!!! If you have facebook and liked my playing, feel free to like this page! www.facebook.com I'd really appreciate it :) TABS! ---------------------- docs.google.com

Adam Rafferty - "Just a City Boy" - Fingerstyle Blues Guitar

Free Tabs & More - www.adamrafferty.com If this tune sounds very "familiar" to you - please read this! A buddy of mine suggested I dig into my Gospel Harlem / B3 Hammond Organ flavor roots and write an original tune. So - here's something for you! Many listeners have pointed out that this sounds like several songs: 1) Billy Taylor - "I Wish It Knew What it Felt Like to Be Free" 2) Branford Marsalis - "Mo Better Blues" 3) I'm adding this - Keb Mo's "I'm Amazing" Yes, these were tunes that many many years ago touched me, and can certainly be heard in here as influences. I assure you this was not conscious or intentional. I heard music as it sprang up, and just went with it. Interested in more of this jabber? Visit: www.thatsongsoundslike.com In searching for the title, I realized that I'm "just a city boy" and that maybe this song will share a little piece of my story of growing up in NYC with you!
