Take a page from crime scene investigators and get the proof you need. To complete this How-To you will need: A small or medium-size balloon A lit candle A powder makeup brush Clear tape Step 1: Fill balloon halfway with water Fill the balloon halfway with water from the tap. Remove from the faucet and fill the other half with air. Tie it off. Step 2: Hold balloon over candle Light a candle. Hold the balloon at the knot end and dangle it above the flame, so the tip of the flame touches it. After 15 to 30 seconds, the smoke from the candle will collect as soot on the balloon's surface. Step 3: Collect the soot from the balloon Using the brush, collect some of the carbon soot from the balloon. Step 4: Brush the soot onto the fingerprint Brush the area you want to search for fingerprints, coating it lightly with soot. If you need more soot, hold the balloon over the flame again until you get enough soot to dust with. Tip: The smoother the surface, the better the fingerprinting results will be. In the dermatology department at Tel Aviv's Sourasky Medical Center, a team of researchers has discovered the gene responsible for fingerprints. And with it, the reason why some people simply don't have any. [Prof. Eli Sprecher, Director, Department of Dermatology]: "Fingerprints are those very special marks that I guess most of us know but actually very special marks which are formed very early during embryogenesis and what is very special about those marks is that they are really unique to every individual." But not everyone has fingerprints. The reason is a defective gene. [Dr. Janna Nousbeck, Researcher] : "We investigated a region that had been segregated and then found the mutation in one of the candidates genes and the candidate gene was 'Smarcad1'." According to researchers, fewer than 20 people worldwide don't have fingerprints. So why all the research into such a rare phenomenon? Original PBS Broadcast Date: January 27, 2009 The film opens with caterpillars munching milkweed in southern Canada in late summer. Soon each caterpillar transforms itself into a silky chrysalis. Roughly 10 days later, a delicate four-winged monarch emerges. Then, at some unknown signal, the monarchs take to the air on a two-month, 2000-mile flight over fields, forests, cities, plains, open water, deserts, and finally mountains to congregate in a tiny, high-altitude region of central Mexico where they've never been before. Incredibly, they arrive by the millions at the same time each year. Shedding light on this natural wonder are some of the world's leading monarch researchers, including Lincoln Brower of Sweet Briar College, independent biologist Bill Calvert, and Orley "Chip" Taylor of the University of Kansas. Putting the monarch phenomenon into perspective, Taylor says, "You've got a butterfly that's originating in Toronto, or it's originating in Detroit, Michigan, or it's coming down from St. Paul or maybe even Winnipeg, and it's moving south. Somehow it finds its way to Mexico. Could you do that?" No one yet knows how the butterflies do it, but Taylor's research reveals that they are expert navigators. Use a tiny amount of crystal iodine (or substitute drugstore tincture of iodine) to reveal latent fingerprints on paper and other porous surfaces. Iodine fuming is the oldest method for revealing latent fingerprints, and is still in very wide use by professional forensics technicians.
