Filmmaking: Composition and Framing Tutorial
To learn more and comment visit our blog at: www.lightsfilmschool.com Welcome to the Lights Film School video tutorial on framing heights. In this video we'll discuss the importance of properly cropping your subject within a frame. Three common mistakes filmmakers often make when framing a subject are: 1. They leave too much 'room" above the subject's head which creates "dead space" 2. They fail to leave enough room above the subject's head "clipping" the top of their head with the top wall of the frame. While this may be advisable for some close-up shots, this is not advisable for medium or full shots. 3. They "cut off" or "amputate" their subject at the joints of their limbs. Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola Talks about the Evolution of Movie Sound
As early as the Apocalypse Now movie in 1979 when Francis Ford Coppola and sound designer Walter Murch pioneered a quadraphonic sound system for the film tour, Coppola has made sound and audio technology an important part of filmmaking, including building a dedicated mixing facility, American Zoetrope. In 2010, under the direction of Coppola, Zoetrope was turned into one of the first post-production facilities to install a Meyer Sound EXP cinema loudspeaker system on its rerecording stage and has since upgraded the other rooms to EXP. Tetro and Twixt are two of his movies that were mixed on an EXP system. In this video, Coppola chats about the evolving role of sound in his storytelling and his sound facility in Napa. Filmmaking Tips: Head Room, Lead Room and Anticipatory Framing
More filmmaking tips on our blog at: www.lightsfilmschool.com our sign up for our online filmmaking course at: www.lightsfilmschool.com What is Head-Room? -- Head-room is the space between the top of your subject's head and the top frame of the composition Lead room is the space where dramatic energy is directed. For close up shots, lead room will often be referred to as "nose room". Anticipatory framing establishes that the camera needs to anticipate the movement within a scene rather than react to it. If you're reacting to movement you'll generally end up with jerky, reactionary shots. You want to be able to predict the movement within a frame. This is even more difficult for documentary filmmakers who often don't have the privilege of marking or blocking out their scenes. For this reason it's important that filmmakers practice camera operation.

State versus Filmmakers - Iran
August 2002 This fascinating piece profiles Iran's dissident filmmakers whose work proves that "censorship is the mother of all metaphors". Cinema here uses symbols to explore the darker side of society. "The Circle" tackles forbidden subjects like prostitution in defiance of Iran's hardline clerics. The film has sold to 37 countries, but has never been seen in Iran. Its director Jafar Panahi refuses to make the cuts demanded by the censors. The clerics have threatened to burn the film if they ever see a copy. Panahi says "They are afraid that if awareness increases or a new idea is expressed, they may lose their power". Tahmineh Milani has run into far more trouble with the authorities. She could face the death sentence for crimes she's accused of due to her film "The Hidden Half". It's a love story set in the brutal period following the Revolution. Her husband says the charges are a fabrication to silence filmmakers. Bahman Farmanara says cinema in Hollywood, where there is "censorship by financing" can be just as restrictive. And Iranian filmmakers have the power to shape society.
