Ice Skating Festival 2012 started in North Korea
Pyongyang, February 15 (KCNA) -- The 21st Paektusan Prize International Figure Skating Festival opened Wednesday with due ceremony at the Ice Rink in Pyongyang to commemorate the birth anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il. Present at the ceremony were Kim Yong Nam, Choe Ryong Hae, officials concerned, sportspersons and working people. Also attending it were the overseas Koreans' delegations, compatriots, the chief of the Pyongyang mission of the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front and foreign guests. Figure skaters from the DPRK, Russia, China, Bulgaria, France and Finland entered the ice rink. Minister of Physical Culture and Sports Pak Myong Chol made an opening address. Then followed a demonstration performance "Great sun of Songun shining all over the world". The DPRK figure skaters staged colorful numbers such as "Fortune of Korea", "Song of love for people" and "Footsteps." They impressively represented the faith and will of all the service persons and people to make this year a year of prosperity to be specially recorded in the glorious history of Kim Il Sung's nation, Kim Jong Il's Korea under the leadership of the dear respected Kim Jong Un, holding Kim Jong Il, eternal heart and great power of the DPRK, in high esteem. Figure skating jumps slow motion with judges details. Very interesting to see her jumps by slow motion. She is small, so no muscle, but very quick to make good axis which make her triples possible. Satoko Miyahara, date of birth 1998, March 26. Height 141cm. (she is small even for Japanese girl, age of 14, ave.150 cm or so, but I was also small like her, I have grown up to 152cm finally...) Not good only skating but she is the best pupil at her school!!

Results - www.sports-reference.com This was to be the Battle of the Carmens between 1984 gold medalist Katarina Witt and American Debi Thomas, the 1986 World Champion. Both were skating their long program to Bizet's Carmen. Witt was the favorite, having won the 1984-85 and 1987 Worlds, and the 1983-88 Europeans, in addition to her Sarajevo gold medal. Thomas was making history as the first great black figure skater at the Olympics. In the compulsories, Thomas placed second to Soviet Kira Ivanova, with Witt third, followed by Canada's Liz Manley. Thomas also was second in the short program, won by Witt, but Thomas narrowly led going in to free skating -- 2.0 to 2.2 factored placements. Manley was a solid third, but had to count on both Thomas and Witt stumbling in the free skate for her to win. Manley put on a great performance before the partisan Calgary crowd, and won the free skate, but it was not quite enough for gold. Witt skated solidly, if not spectacularly, and placed second, which brought her the gold medal. Thomas had difficulty in the free skating, falling on her first jump, and placed only fourth, which dropped her to the bronze medal. Though Witt and Manley would go on to professional ice shows, Thomas returned to Stanford, where she was a pre-medical student, and later became an orthopaedic surgeon.
