In the United States, the album was certified 15x Platinum for shipments of over 15 million copies. The album revived the phenomenon of disco in the US and was a national obsession. "Every so often, a piece of music comes along that defines a moment in popular culture history: Johann Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus did this in Vienna in the 1870s; Jerome Kern's Show Boat did it for Broadway musicals of the 1920s; and the Beatles' Sgt. He yelled at me a lot, but as a father. After awhile I became, from those in the orchestra, possibly closer than anyone else to Toscanini. Away from the podium, he was like a little child. He loved music. In his study, he would show me Puccini's snuff box, Verdi's eye glasses. He treasured these things. One day I was visiting him and he asked me to stay for lunch. I could tell he was very tired, and we had finished our business, so I told him that I didn't have to stay. I said, "Maestro, you look tired. Why don't you take a nap?" He said, "I've been up since five o'clock this morning studying this symphony." The symphony that week was Beethoven's Fifth. I said, "Maestro, how many times have you conducted that?" He answered, "Oh, hundreds." I said, "And you're still studying it?" I loved his answer. He said, "Well, I'm always afraid I may have missed something." This is how he really felt about music.

"A Fifth Of Beethoven" was a disco instrumental recorded by Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band. It was adapted by Murphy from the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. The record was produced by noted production music and sound effects recording producer Thomas J. Valentino. It was one of the most popular and memorable pieces of music from the disco era. The "Fifth" in the song's title is a pun, referencing a liquid measure approximately equal to one-fifth of a gallon (757 ml), a popular size for bottles containing hard liquor, as well as Beethoven's Fifth Symphony from which the song was adapted. "A Fifth Of Beethoven" was released in 1976 becoming Murphy's best-known work and his only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached the #1 position for one week. It also went to number 10 on Billboard's Black Singles chart in the same year. Even though Murphy played nearly every instrument on the song, his record company cautioned that the record would stand a better chance if credited to a group rather than an individual. To Walter's annoyance, they came up with the name Walter Murphy and The Big Apple Band, only to discover two days after its release that there was already a Big Apple Band. The name on the label was eventually changed to The Walter Murphy Band and then simply to Walter Murphy.
