Fault Lines - Mexico: Impunity and profits
Once known as a booming industrial city and a model of economic progress in Mexico, the border city of Juarez has become infamous as the murder capital of the world. More than 8000 people have been killed there since 2008, when Mexican President Felipe Calderon sent in the army to carry out his offensive against the drug cartels. The official story is that the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels are fighting for the city and the access it provides to the multi-billion dollar US drug market only a few hundred metres away. On this episode of Fault Lines, Josh Rushing travels to Ciudad Juarez, and asks how human life there came to be worth so much less than the drugs being trafficked through. Episode first aired June 13, 2011 2230 GMT on Al Jazeera English. english.aljazeera.net Follow on Twitter: twitter.com Follow on Facebook: facebook.com Follow on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines www.youtube.com Meet the Fault Lines staff: www.youtube.com

Fault Lines - Rio: Olympic City
english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com An explosion of joy on the streets of Rio greeted the announcement that the city would be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. Two weeks later, Rio saw an explosion of violence when a police helicopter was shot down by drug traffickers. The government's reaction has been to intensify the crackdown on the citys slums - or Favelas. A Human Rights Watch report in December accused Rio and Sao Paolo police of killing over 11000 people since 2003. Many, the report claims, were executed by the police, shot at point blank range. Many were innocent. And on many occasions, the police tried to cover up the evidence. This week, Fault Lines travels to Rio to look at the crackdown in Rio's Favelas, and what it means for the people of the city.

Fault Lines - Mexico's Hidden War
The spectacular violence of Mexico's drug war grabs international attention. Some 40000 people have been killed since 2006, when President Felipe Calderon deployed Mexican military and security forces in the so-called war against the cartels -- often in gruesome and sadistic ways. But behind the headlines, under cover of impunity, a low- intensity war is being waged. In the second episode of a two-part series, Josh Rushing and the Fault Lines team travel to the state of Guerrero to investigate claims that Mexican security forces are using the drug war as a pretext to repress indigenous and campesino communities. In one of Mexico's poorest and top drug-producing states, where struggling farmers are surrounded by the narco-economy, we ask about the cost of taking the struggle against dispossession into your own hands. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines www.youtube.com Meet the Fault Lines staff: www.youtube.com

Fault Lines - Puerto Rico: The fiscal experiment
Dozens of university students are arrested for demonstrating against a tuition hike. But Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno remains steadfast in charging students more to help close a $3.2 billion budget gap. The students' fight is representative of a larger debate in Puerto Rico, and in the US, about how to solve a severe budget crisis -- and at what cost. Gov. Fortuno, a hawkish fiscal conservative, laid off 20000 government workers in 2009, and suspended all labor negotiations, just like governors on the US mainland are doing today. But two years later Puerto Rico's labor unions are still scrambling to reorganize a largely unemployed population -- nearly 17 percent. Puerto Rico is in its fifth year of recession, and expected to be the world's slowest growing economy if its situation doesn't improve. At question is the degree of economic and social responsibility the US has to its commonwealth state. Fault Lines travels to Puerto Rico to investigate America's legacy as the Island's ruler, and the harsh economic policies that are being imposed on the people who live there. This episode of Fault Lines, "Puerto Rico: The Fiscal Experiment" first aired June 27, 2011 on Al Jazeera English. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines www.youtube.com Meet the Fault Lines staff: www.youtube.com

Fault Lines - Colombia's gold rush
Gold fever is sweeping across South America. Nowhere is it more lethal than in Colombia, where the gold rush has become a new axle in Colombia's civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries, and leftist rebel groups fighting to take control of mining regions. It's fueling an old ideological conflict and has displacing hundreds of people. Helicopter raids by the Colombian Army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace, and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests, and operating with impunity from human rights violations. Thousands have fled their homes where land is violently contested, and others live in fear they'll be removed from their land, arrested, or killed. The multinationals are flooding in too. With gold now worth around $1500 an ounce, everyone is getting in on the act, including North American mining companies. Colombia's pro-business mentality has seen arbitrary concessions by the state sold to multinational companies, often on indigenous land. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to speak to the people caught in the middle. The rural workers and artisan miners who've mined for generations, and some whose ancestors were enslaved during the first gold rush centuries ago. Others are former coca farmers, put out of work by the US-led Plan Colombia. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr ...

The Fault In Our Stars (Original Song - No Plot Spoilers!) TFiOS
The Fault In Our Stars (TFiOS)... In honor of John Green and Esther Earl. Lyrics below. This is an original song inspired by the author John Green. There are QUOTES from the book, if you haven't read it and don't want anything at all to be spoiled, but no plot points are revealed. ----------- LYRICS ----------- It starts Right here Where my heart-working-too-hard pain demands to be felt Oh, it seems impossible That everything we did and built and wrote And thought and discovered will be forgotten And all of this will have been for naught and CHORUS What will they say After I'm gone? Is there something wrong With just being me? Why must I make A legacy That only leaves a scar I want the grace to believe There's no fault in our stars I've spent my whole life chasing immortality Having the need, not just a want - to be extraordinary There's a certain unpleasantness to drowning in the knowledge That I'll die in the middle of a sen-- And I want that sentence to count Have I misplaced my faith While the sluttiness of time pervades? Is salvation after all, just temporary anyway? And the only thing worthwhile is Living my best life today And trusting it's enough to love and be loved? What will they say After I'm gone? Is there something wrong With just being me? Why must I make A legacy That only leaves a scar I want the grace to believe There's no fault in our stars Can I trust you when you say okay Okay Okay Can I trust you when you say it'll be okay Okay Can I trust you when ...
