European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) While Nazi Germany's crimes were unprecedented, Adolf Hitler himself was in many respects a typical figure. An idle youth, of seemingly mediocre talents, his political career and passionate hatreds were formed by the experience of World War I. The rise of fascism in Germany, as elsewhere, must be understood in the context of a postwar climate of resentment and instability. Germany's economic crisis, in particular, led the middle classes to support National Socialism well before any other group. This resentment would find a ready outlet in the form of increasingly persecuted minority populations, above all the Jews. In considering Nazism against the backdrop of a more general wave of extreme rightwing and fascist political sentiment, it is important to note that the policies of the Third Reich were not only known to but also endorsed by the majority of the German population. 00:00 - Chapter 1. In his latest release, the former New York Times correspondent compares the US Christian right to 20th Century fascism. As a son of a preacher, Hedges has a deep knowledge of the Bible which he uses to openly blast the role of Christianity in politics. Hedges believes the far right Christian believers have been manipulated by the high power, allowing for bigotry and intolerance. (AND HE IS RIGHT!!!!) Unlike Chris, I grew up in a strict seperatists fundamentalist baptist household. Much of details I have read were already known to me. I like his book because it is bringing to light the Fascist nature of American Religion. It has been my struggle, unlike most Christians and Non-Chrisians, to see this Christianity as anything but fascist in nature. I highly recomend picking up this book. Also I recomend picking up a copy of "The Holy Reich: Nazi Conceptions of Christianity, 1919-1945" by Richard Steigmann-Gall

There was no alcohol in her system — not a drop — and yet MacDonald's failure to provide a proper breath sample meant her car was taken away for a month and her licence suspended for 90 days. Now, $6000 out-of-pocket and in fear of losing her home, the Cranbrook senior will wait another six months for a ruling on her case, as the BC government tweaks legislation to comply with a court order. American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America is a non-fiction book by American author Chris Hedges, published in January 2007. Hedges is a former seminary student with a master's degree in divinity from Harvard and was a long-time foreign correspondent for The New York Times. He had previously criticized the Christian right in articles such as his cover story in the May 2005 issue of Harper's magazine called "Soldiers of Christ". Hedges' title comes from a prediction by his Harvard ethics professor, James Luther Adams, who 25 years earlier had warned his students that they would all be fighting the "Christian fascists".[2] Hedges argues that this prediction has come true in that extreme forms of American Christianity now share many features with totalitarian movements, including suppression of individuality, a belief in magic, a shifting ideology, a "binary" good-or-evil view of the world, and a deep intolerance of people outside the movement. He writes that "Christian radicals" are often so consumed with power and wealth they are no longer practicing Christianity in its traditional sense, as a religion focused on compassion and caring for the downtrodden.
