Agnetha Faltskog - My Colouring Book
After the release of I Stand Alone in 1988, Agnetha took a break from her musical career and completely withdrew from public life. In April 2004, after 17 years of silence Agnetha came back with a bang by releasing the album My Colouring Book, a collection of covers of 1960s classic oldies. The album topped the charts in Sweden, reached top 5 in some countries and No.12 in UK. The Times reviewer noted "her voice is still an impressive pop instrument", and The Observer noted "time hasn't diminished her perfect voice". The album release attracted major media attention across Europe, but Agnetha refused to be involved in any publicity. Despite this, the album sold more than 500000 copies worldwide, with 50000 of those in the UK alone. Agnetha has a fear of flying and has not been on an airplane for over 15 years. When she goes abroad she prefers to travel by car. She prefers a tranquil life in a rural suburb south-west of Stockholm, away from the noisy city atmosphere. Agnetha wrote these cover notes for My Colouring Book: The early impressions in life are etched with a particular strength and clarity. That applies especially to music. So this album is a celebration of the music I heard yesterday. A respectful homage to the artists who have inspired me and left deep prints in my soul and in my heart. This show was part of a promotional tour to publicise her first solo album after Abba, which was called "Wrap Your Arms Around Me". The album reached No.1 in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium and Denmark. Here she sings the title track from the album. This song had limited release as a single, but still reached No.1 in Belgium and No.3 in Holland. Her whispering technique here is as hot as anything you will ever see in a song. The video for "The Last Time" was recorded a couple of days before Christmas 87 in Stockholm. The director Marcello Ansiano let a whole studio number 1 at the Film House in Stockholm re-build to a room full with furniture. A young blonde guy played Agnetha's lover. "The Last Time" is the first single from Agnetha Fältskog's third English solo-album I Stand Alone, released in 1987. "The Last Time" was released as both 7 and 12 inch singles, as well as a 3 inch CD. The latter two also featured an extended version of the song. The song contained a different sound from Fältskog's previous work due to the West Coast American influences of the producers, Peter Cetera and Bruce Gaitsch. Despite a modern sound and a well-known producer, the single was not a resounding success. Fältskog did promote the song, including visiting London in February 1988, but the single only reached No.77 in the UK. In The Netherlands, where Fältskog traditionally had a large fan base, the single peaked at No. 40. For the South American market, Fältskog recorded a Spanish version of "The Last Time" called "La Ultima Vez." This version also appeared on the South American version of the album and is considered to be a rare recording. In 2004 Agnetha returned to the recording studio after 17 years away to record the album My Colouring Book. She wanted to record something special for her family, friends and fans with a meaningful connection with fond memories from the past. Agnetha pays tribute to the artists who have inspired her: "Thank you Jackie DeShannon, Doris Day, the Shangri-Las, Connie Francis, Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, Rita Pavone, Sylvie Vartan, Dusty Springfield, Demis Roussos, Simon & Garfunkel, Skeeter Davis, Cliff Richard, Paul Anka, the Beatles, Beach Boys, Neil Sedaka, Brian Hyland, Grace Kelly , Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and many many more. You are all deep within my heart and will stay there forever. " There was no public promotion for the new album. Agnetha held a party for the album release at Bern's in Stockholm in April 2004, attended by 150 friends and relatives. Her daughter Linda Ulvaeus was there, she recorded back-ups on several of the songs along with Sofia Tretow (Michael's daughter) and Svea Strings. Agnetha's comments for Remember Me are: "Sandie Shaw, the barefoot singer, may be best known for 'Puppet On A String'. She has such a special way of singing, and she's one of my many role models." Would we still remember her after 17 years away? The public soon gave their answer. The album topped the charts in Sweden, reached the top 5 in many European contries and no. 12 in the UK. It sold 500000 copies worldwide, 50000 of those in the UK alone ...
