A fun beat from outer space (an experimental improv jam)

Preview my CD: ronaldjenkees.com This beat is in the very early stages. As a matter of fact, there are only two chords being played in the background. But it's fun to jam out to. Also, this will be on my next CD (out hopefully in the summer). Thanks for watching, folks!!!

The Dickson Experimental Sound Film

This short film was a test for Edison's "Kinetophone" project, the first attempt in history to record sound and moving image in synchronization. This was an experiment by William Dickson to put sound and film together either in 1894 or 1895. Unfortunately, this experiment failed because they didn't understand synchronization of sound and film. The large cone on the left hand side of the frame is the "microphone" for the wax cylinder recorder (off-camera). The Library of Congress had the film. The wax cylinder soundtrack, however, was believed lost for many years. Tantalizingly, a broken cylinder labeled "Violin by WKL Dickson with Kineto" was catalogued in the 1964 inventory at the Edison National Historic Site. In 1998, Patrick Loughney, curator of Film and Television at the Library of Congress, retrieved the cylinder and had it repaired and re-recorded at the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archive of Recorded Sound, Lincoln Center, New York. Since the Library did not possess the necessary synchronizing technology, Loughney - at the suggestion of producer Rick Schmidlin - sent multi-Oscar winner Walter Murch a videotape of the 17 seconds of film and an audiocassette of 3 minutes and 20 seconds of sound with a request to marry the two. By digitizing the media and using digital editing software, Murch was able to synchronize them and complete the failed experiment 105 years later. This 35mm film was generously made available to the Internet Archive by Walter Murch and Sean Cullen.

The Extended Mind: Recent Experimental Evidence

Google Tech Talks September 2, 2008 ABSTRACT We have been brought up to believe that the mind is located inside the head. But there are good reasons for thinking that this view is too limited. Recent experimental results show that people can influence others at a distance just by looking at them, even if they look from behind and if all sensory clues are eliminated. And people's intentions can be detected by animals from miles away. The commonest kind of non-local interaction mental influence occurs in connection with telephone calls, where most people have had the experience of thinking of someone shortly before they ring. Controlled, randomized tests on telephone telepathy have given highly significant positive results. Research techniques have now been automated and experiments on telepathy are now being conducted through the internet and cell phones, enabling widespread participation. Speaker: Rupert Sheldrake Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. is a biologist and author of more than 75 technical papers and ten books, the most recent being The Sense of Being Stared At. He studied at Cambridge and Harvard Universities, was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge and a Research Fellow of the Royal Society. He is currently Director of the Perrott-Warrick project, funded from Trinity College Cambridge.

Experimental Psychology - Change Blindness

A special case of information-selection by the human cognitive system. The brain seems to select the information worth to process, or most relevant, at every instant, in almost every context. This might produce some very specific phenomena such as what psychologists call "Change Blindness". (FB) --------------------------- Such kind of experiments try to show the limits of our capacity to encode, retain, and compare visual information from one glance to the next. This suggests, among other issues, that our awareness of our visual surroundings is far more sparse than most people intuitively believe. (FB)

Purged -- A gothic short animation and experimental film by James Lee

An angel is banished to the cold plains of purgatory. Purged was completed before I started work on Tarboy, and I figured it was about time I packaged and released it on Newgrounds and Youtube. It was my third year animation project in college and the first larger scale short film I completed. It was also the first project completed that Hania and I collaborated on. The production of this was an absolute nightmare to say the least. Working on this project was the reason I decided to do Tarboy completely in Flash. My overall pipeline for animation looked something like this: 1.Draw images on paper. 2. Scan into Photoshop for digital paint. 3. Bring into morphing software for head turns 4. Export into Flash for character animation. 5. Export into Adobe After Effects for compositing. 6. Export into Premier for Editing. I'm thinking this will receive a mixed response, but at this stage I'm glad it's finally out. Hope you enjoy it, check out the bonus features if you want to learn more about my messy pre-production process :) For Purged, I wanted to create something experimental, which revolved around the concepts of heaven, purgatory and hell. I created this while my art was going through a more gothic stage. 2D Animation and Art by James Lee Music by Hania Lee

Experimental Audio Research - Data Rape

Track 6 from EAR's 1998 "Data Rape". From the liner notes: Circuit bending involves taking cheaply available electronic soundmaking toys (in this case mostly Texas Instruments' "Speak & Spell" human voice synthesizing toys from the late '70's, but also applicable to all sorts of keyboards, effects boxes and samplers) and adding extra wires, knobs and switches to make new connections between parts of the internal circuitry and chips. This sends data and electronic signals to previously unrelated circuit board points - inducing through a strange sort of "Data Rape"- astounding new sounds, chance evolving compositions and textures, phoneme freezing and looping, random glottal pulse and phoneme generation, complex lattice filtering and unique pitch shifting techniques.

19. Quantum Mechanics I: The key experiments and wave-particle duality

Fundamentals of Physics, II (PHYS 201) The double slit experiment, which implies the end of Newtonian Mechanics is described. The de Broglie relation between wavelength and momentum is deduced from experiment for photons and electrons. The photoelectric effect and Compton scattering, which provided experimental support for Einstein's photon theory of light are reviewed. The wave function is introduced along with the probability interpretation. The uncertainty principle is shown arise from the fact that the particle's location is determined by a wave and that waves diffract when passing a narrow opening. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden - experimental fighter

The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (震電, "Magnificent Lightning") fighter was a World War II Japanese propeller-driven aircraft prototype that was built in a canard design. The wings were attached to the tail section and stabilizers were on the front. The propeller was also in the rear, in a pusher configuration. It was expected to be a highly maneuverable interceptor, but only two were finished before the end of war. Plans were also drawn up for a jet-powered version (J7W2 Shinden Kai), but this never left the drawing board. The J designation was used by land based fighters of the Imperial Japanese Navy and W is for Watanabe factory produced (later Kyūshū). The J7W was developed for the Imperial Japanese Navy as a specific response to the B-29 Superfortress raids on the Japanese homeland. For this type of mission, the J7W was armed with 4 forward-firing 30mm cannons in the nose. It was to be operated from land bases. The canard concept was tested first by building a number of gliders with this layout, designated MXY6. The first prototype, the only one to have flown, is currently in storage at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC General characteristics: Crew: one, pilot Length: 9.66 m (31 ft 8 in) Wingspan: 11.11 m (36 ft 5 in) Height: 3.92 m (12 ft 10 in) Wing area: 20.5 m² (220 ft²) Empty weight: 3645 kg (8019 lb) Loaded weight: 4928 kg (10841 lb) Max takeoff weight: 5288 kg (11663 lb) Powerplant: 1× Mitsubishi Ha-43 12, 1589 kW (2130 hp) Performance: Maximum speed ...

Experimental Science Fiction Music

One of my first Kompoz projects. An attempt to create an otherworldly and disturbing score for a horror/sci-fi film. I'm something of a Bernard Herrmann fan. Bernard Herrmann did scores for the original version of the Twilight Zone on TV. He also did the music for Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Vertigo, Fahrenheit 451, and Cape Fear to name a few. So there is some of his influence here, and also Forbidden Planet's music by Bebe Barron and her husband Louis, a completely electronic score where it's hard to tell the music from the background sound effects, they merge into one. The sound of that film, as far as I know, remains unique in its strange and alien sound even today. Kompoz site: www.kompoz.com My site on Kompoz: www.kompoz.com

Seconds Of Arc - experimental music video

This is the experimental video I made that won Best Music Media at the 2006 Ffresh Festival. None of the images are computer created, they're all real things, disguised with camera techniques. The only manipulation was to enhance the colours, and to reverse/mirror/flip some images. Quote from festival booklet - "Seconds of Arc was chosen because music and image are inseperable in creating the overall effect" said juror of this category Emyr Glyn Williams of Ankstmusik. "I loved the deeply mysterious images and the picture quality is also of a very high technical standard."

Experimental Music (1984-1989)

I recorded these pieces in the 1980s and recently recovered them from twenty-year-old cassette tapes. The first excerpt is from a work that was recorded at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. The other songs were recorded at Carleton University in Ottawa. The video clips are processed (using AfterEffects) screen captures (using CamStudio) of music visualizations (using the iTunes and Dr. Glitter visualizers). Track 1. Blade: www.youtube.com 'Blade' features drums, synthesizer (Yahama DX-7), alto saxophone, voices, a bicycle pump, coins, pieces of wood, glasses of water and probably a few things I have forgotten about. This was recorded at Fanshawe College with my classmates in the Music Industry Arts programme. We had some free time and I an idea kicking around in my head, so we just went into one of the studios (the smaller one) and recorded it one afternoon. (I left the MIA programme shortly after the recording to work, save up some money and then go on to study at university). Track 2. Young Sycamore: www.youtube.com Young Sycamore' has live vocal and percussion parts that weren't recorded. It was only performed once. The lyrics were adapted from a poem by Wlliam Carlos Williams (oldpoetry.com The piece was written/played using the software 'PC Composer' and a midi controller. It was recorded at the Computer Music room at Carleton University. Track 3. Untitled: www.youtube.com 'Untitled' features an EMS Synthi 100, a synthesizer from the early 70s. BBC Horizon - What makes us good or evil? (1/4)

The difference between Normal People and Psychopaths Broadcast 7th September 2011 on BBC2 What makes us good or evil? It's a simple but deeply unsettling question. One that scientists are now starting to answer. Horizon meets the researchers who have studied some of the most terrifying people behind bars - psychopathic killers. But there was a shock in store for one of these scientists, Professor Jim Fallon, when he discovered that he had the profile of a psychopath. And the reason he didn't turn out to be a killer holds important lessons for all of us. We meet the scientist who believes he has found the moral molecule and the man who is using this new understanding to rewrite our ideas of crime and punishment.
