Purged -- A gothic short animation and experimental film by James Lee

An angel is banished to the cold plains of purgatory. Purged was completed before I started work on Tarboy, and I figured it was about time I packaged and released it on Newgrounds and Youtube. It was my third year animation project in college and the first larger scale short film I completed. It was also the first project completed that Hania and I collaborated on. The production of this was an absolute nightmare to say the least. Working on this project was the reason I decided to do Tarboy completely in Flash. My overall pipeline for animation looked something like this: 1.Draw images on paper. 2. Scan into Photoshop for digital paint. 3. Bring into morphing software for head turns 4. Export into Flash for character animation. 5. Export into Adobe After Effects for compositing. 6. Export into Premier for Editing. I'm thinking this will receive a mixed response, but at this stage I'm glad it's finally out. Hope you enjoy it, check out the bonus features if you want to learn more about my messy pre-production process :) For Purged, I wanted to create something experimental, which revolved around the concepts of heaven, purgatory and hell. I created this while my art was going through a more gothic stage. 2D Animation and Art by James Lee Music by Hania Lee

Project for my Freshmen "Dimensions of Creativity" class. My forte is more narrative films, so this is really my first attempt at an experimental film. I think it turned out alright. It made me realize how hard it can be to squeeze about 200 cuts in 3 minutes.

Translucent Reflections (16mm experimental film)

See this film virtually projected in 15 rooms at transtao.net This is the digital version of a film that was shot on three rolls of film (300ft). It consists of 23 "Translucent" shots and 23 'Reflective" shots. These numbers represent the 23 chromosomes donated by each parent during conception. Also, I filmed a waterfall, sunsight (rise) and clouds. The water is both an element of nature and also creates a look of the film being developed in chemicals. The sun is the source of light, which allows the images to be captured on film. The clouds represent the middle ground between these two. There is also a shot of the moon which brings hope of the light during times of darkness. I used what is known as chance operations in order to edit the film. I first decided that the three lengths of the shots would be 3frames 3sec 3ft (3fps 72fps 120fps..frames per sec) Then, I decided to layer the shots in three layers of superimposition. Next, in order to determine the placement of each shot within the layers, I threw the dice, stopped my stop watch, and flipped two pennies (60ish times each). Finally, I wrote these outcomes on 173 pieces of 16mm film and drew them at random placing the 1st number on layer 1, the next on layer 2, 3rd one on layer 3 and then the 4th back on layer 1, until all 300 feet of film was used. The film then, is a result of a relationship between the camera and me. This sounds strange, but the finished film is like a baby. The three layers represent the camera ...

Free Radicals - A History of Experimental Film (2010)

In this film essay, Chodorov examines the lives and work of such experimental luminaries as Hans Richter, Michael Snow, Peter Kubelka, Stan Brakhage and the godfather of the New American Cinema, Jonas Mekas. Named after the Len Lye's landmark experimental film of dancing lines and marks scratched into the emulsion, "Free Radicals" gives an informative and accessible introduction into the world of avant-garde cinema. Unlike the MTV-ADD montage barrage that characterizes so many contemporary documentaries, the film does not hesitate to show extended clips of the actual films by the artists, immersing the viewer in their unique visual worlds and perspectives. Filmmaker and film activist Pip Chodorov studied film semiotics at the University of Paris. In 1994, he founded the distribution company Re:Voir for the edition of historical and contemporary experimental films. In 2005, he also founded The Film Gallery -- the only gallery devoted exclusively to experimental film artists. He is a co-founder of L'Abominable, a cooperative do-it-yourself film lab in Paris. His own films range from animation to film diary. (Karen Pyudik - Hollywood Fine Arts Examiner)

Tad's Experimental Film

UPDATE 7/5/08: If you assholes over at Viacom plan on taking down my video, I'mma sue your asses right back. I recently deleted 30+ gigs of downloaded anime off my computer, but kept the effing AMVs. I'm not about to be told what's copyright infringement and what's not. We've seen the videos about Tad/Stephen, Noblet/Jellineck, Paul/ Stephen, and also all the ones just about Paul, but how come no one has made a music video dedicated to our favorite building manager? Seriously. Well, now he has one! :D His very own experimental film. I do not own Paul Dinello, Stephen Colbert, any song by They Might Be Giants, or any other intellectual property in this video. However, this is a digital production that I made, therefore, my digital property rights say that nobody should legally be allowed to sue me or take this down, because I have not infringed on any sort of copyright. gtfo, Viacom :,(

Albus Angelus *Experimental Film* Video Art* [HD] Baltimore MD Videographer

-Abstract Experimental Film Noir- ---The following Info on *Video Art* and Experimental Film was taken from Wiki--- Video art is a type of art which relies on moving pictures and comprises video and/or audio data. (It should not however be confused with television or experimental cinema). Video art came into existence during the 1960s and 1970s, is still widely practiced and has given rise to the widespread use of video installations. OVERVIEW Video art is named after the video tape, which was most commonly used in the form's early years, but before that artists had already been working on film, and with changes in technology Hard Disk, CD-ROM, DVD, and solid state are superseding the video tape as the carrier. Despite obvious parallels and relationships, video art is not experimental film. One of the key differences between video art and theatrical cinema is that video art does not necessarily rely on many of the conventions that define theatrical cinema. Video art may not employ the use of actors, may contain no dialogue, may have no discernible narrative or plot, or adhere to any of the other conventions that generally define motion pictures as entertainment. This distinction is important, because it delineates video art not only from cinema but ...

*The Three Gibbet Crossroads* Experimental Film* Baltimore MD Videographer

(My first film) Adapted from a short story which appears in the play "The Pillowman" written by Martin McDonagh. *Summary of the Play* Katurian, a writer of grisly short stories often showing violence against children, has been arrested by two detectives, Ariel and Tupolski, because some of his stories resemble recent child murders. When he hears that his brother Michal has confessed to the murders and implicated Katurian, he resigns himself to his execution but attempts to save his stories from destruction. The play includes both narrations and reenactments of several of Katurian's stories, most notably the autobiographical "The Writer and the Writer's Brother," which tells how Katurian developed his disturbed imagination by hearing the sounds of Michal being tortured by their parents.

dance/movement test for experimental film

a fairly crude test done for a new experimental film i am going to shoot with designer erica frank this is just a test shot up at cal arts in a white room - the final film will have make up and costumes this was basically a test to work with the dancer, explore editing and camera techniques, and try out the music (i wrote this music a while ago - it was inspired mainly by 60's era penderecki, though it is occasionally more melodic) we shot it in a few hours in an all white room with an hvx in the final she will have elaborate make up and costume

The Zombie Survival Guide (2006)

This experimental film/extended trailer was originally created as a "fan film" contest entry, inspired by the books "The Zombie Survival Guide" and "World War Z" written by Max Brooks. Originally filmed between December 2005 - February 2006 on a budget of about twenty bucks and three or four pizzas. The over-the-top aspects were, of course, intentional. We're aiming for laughs. Not scares. *IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION: We get alot of people asking similar questions, so try watching the commentary version here: www.youtube.com *IF YOU ARE MAX BROOKS: Thank you for inspiring us! As huge fans, we'd love to hear what you think of our little movie. We know that we broke many of the "rules" from the guide, but it was all to make the film a little more fun and not just another "instructional video" ripoff. Thanks again! We hope you enjoyed it!

The Blu Dot Real Good Experiment: Film

When we opened our SoHo store in 2008, we were introduced to the resourceful culture of "curb-mining": the act of finding furniture and art on the street. Now that a year has passed, we decided to conduct a curb-mining experiment of our own. On November 4-5, 25 Real Good Chairs were dropped around NYC, free for the take. Many were GPS-enabled. Watch the film to see what happened.

"NEGATIVE-LY" (Experimental Film-1968)

Here is an odd entry in my movie collection. It's a film I made in the Summer of 1968 showing different landmarks in south New York State. To do something different, I did two things: shot the film in letterbox format (Vistascope) with my 16mm Bolex camera and developed the film myself...as a negative! I didn't do such a good job as you can easily see all the nicks & scratches thru the whole thing. But, it IS a negative. Now that 40 years have slipped by, there are some interesting scenes from the past. First is a scene driving through downtown Poughkeepsie, NY forty years ago. Next is a view of the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge with a train going across. Since the bridge was built in 1888, trains have not gone over the bridge in years! And after a 1974 fire, the bridge was closed. Also, my girlfriend at the time is seen along the shore. Next is a stop at Downing Park in Newburgh, NY and some slow-motion running. Finally, a scene of Central Hudson's Danskammer Point, 60 miles North of NYC and close to Newburgh. Lots was packed into a short 3-minute experimental film! I made the film on a whim and decided to process it as a negative. Filmed: July 1968

Andy warhol's experimental film

How did Andy Warhol separate himself from others Pop Artists? Simply, he took the imagery of the everyday Americana and had it mass produced graphically as Art. His breakthrough was the ability to act, produce work by the suggestions of others, and his genius was his timing. This immediacy of the present gave his work relevancy. Mr. Warhol understood his weakness in areas where his skill as a painter seemed mediocre, and he devised a technique of mechanically reproducing images that were equally similar to the style in which he was attempting to emulate. And through the technique of silk-screening and photography his craftsmanship as a graphic designer produced work that was clean and precise.

Maya Deren At Land Pt.1

Deren's second experimental film, At Land (1944), reinforces her interest in the juxtaposition of anachronistic spaces and introduces a critique of social rituals. This film begins by reversing the natural rhythm with images of waves breaking and descending back into the sea. Starring again, Deren is seen climbing up a dead tree trunk on the beach, magically emerging onto a table where a formal dinner party is in progress. This 'civilized' world ignores Deren as she crawls along their dinner table. By depicting herself as invisible to the diners, Deren highlights the myopia of the guests. The dinner sequence in At Land ends with an enchanted chess game. A pawn falls from the table and descends back into the dead wood on the beach, it falls over rocks, into the water and is washed away over the waterfalls. Chasing the pawn, Deren is restored to her original landscape. - Wendy Haslem

The Addict's Home ~ experimental film

Emotional dependency on drugs (this is not an entertainment video). "My doors are now closing, my era has ended - I've been everywhere, seen everything, done everything. Solitude is the only true freedom. And it's already in my blood, you can't take it away from me - I shall be released." - Jack "From early childhood I developed a strong sense of being psychologically alone, and on my own, in the world. My solitary outlook prevents me from gaining emotional release through associations with other people, but I find I can get this emotional release from drugs. So I've become dependent on drugs, in the way other people are dependent on their social relationships, with friends and relatives." - Author unknown
