As exports rise and unemployment reaches a 20-year low, they wonder why the Greeks can't follow their lead. As the rest of Europe is being slowly absorbed by the Eurozone crisis, Bavaria is going from strength to strength. It's now the richest state in Germany, which is now the richest country in Europe. "We're living in paradise", boasts one Munich resident. Not so long ago the money men of Wall Street and London thought Germany was a bit of a joke, but no one's laughing now. And there's growing discontent amongst Germans about having to prop up the rest of the Eurozone. "These countries! They have to not spend too much money", says Dr Anton Kathrein, an industrialist. With Bavaria conspicuously having a great time, it is rapidly becoming a magnet for Europe's economic refugees. Juliana Salija escaped war torn Yugoslavia 17 years ago for a better life in Greece. Two months ago she fled there, where one in five are now jobless. "I love that place but it was impossible", she says. So what is the secret to this German success and are they justified in criticising their neighbours' work ethic? This report goes in search of some answers. www.euronews.com Should those suffering from incurable diseases have the right to assisted suicide? At the moment this issue varies from country to country, and some have yet to decide. Should you have the right to die with dignity? Euronews' Alex Taylor speaks to Doctor Bernard Devalois, Head of the Palliative Care Unit at the Hospital of Pontoise in France, putting forward your questions on I-talk. The first question comes from Alexandre from France: "As a Frenchman, I'm asking the question because there are a lot of discussions in France on whether we should allow assisted suicide, and the similarity between suicide and assisted suicide, and no law has been passed, either in France or Europe to harmonise the rules. To allow people to die with dignity. "So as more and more people talk about this, when will a European law be passed that will help people to die with dignity?" *Alex Taylor:* "A fundamental question. There's no agreement between different countries. What is the European position? Is there one?" *Dr Bernard Devalois:* "There is no European position as it's a complicated issue. Dying with dignity is not at all the same as assisted suicide or lethal injection. These are different things. Palliative care is to ensure that people die with dignity. Chris Martenson and James Turk talk about Europe and the global economy
Subscribe to our newsletter at www.goldmoney.com In this video Chris Martenson - economic analyst at chrismartenson.com and author of The Crash Course and James Turk, Director of the GoldMoney Foundation talk about the problems facing the eurozone as well as the global economy. Chris Martenson points out that the whole world simply has too much debt. This is why he believes that there won't be a real solution to the euro crisis. The big question will rather be who will take losses on the debt, which can't possibly be repaid. The lack of political leadership and unwillingness to accept reality is contributing to this crisis. Additionally, the monetary tools central banks have traditionally used to revive economies are starting to show less and less effect. In Martenson's view, the financial sector has become way to large and interlinked across borders, so that a default by one country could bring down the whole financial systems, because credit default swaps would get triggered and could bring down the writers of those derivatives. James Turk mentions that today, commercial banks as well as central banks are leveraged at unsustainable levels. While both agree that it makes sense to get back to less risky traditional banking and a sound money system, Martenson raises the question of how it will be possible to bring the leverage down to prudent levels again and how to get rid of the huge amount of complex derivatives. www.euronews.com In this edition of U-talk, Damien, from Lyon, France, poses this question: "I was recently approached in the street and asked to sign a European Citizens' Initiative to improve animal protection in the European Union. The organisers explained that if they got enough signatures the European Commission would be obliged to study the matter. Is this true?" Malgorzata Kurowska, Senior Communications Officer for Europe Direct, responds: "Indeed, as from 1 April 2012, the new European Citizens' Initiative allows European citizens to be more directly involved in the legislative procedure of the European Union. It will let them invite the European Commission to propose a new piece of legislation. "To get started, the interested parties need to set up a special committee. This committee has to be made up of at least seven EU citizens who are old enough to vote in European Parliament elections and living in at least seven different European countries. "The committee, acting as an official organiser of the initiative, then needs to register on the special website of the European Commission. "The European Commission then has two months to verify if the provided data are correct and if the issue concerns matters where the EU has the competence to act and then it will validate the registration.
