Etymology of 'Key'
Oxford Etymological Dictionary says the etymology of "key" is unknown, but that sounds ridiculous to me. Let me show you why. I also show you the cognates in other languages, although these are not derived from Latin clavis. This video is not an etymology of schlüssel.

Bionic Dance & Etymology
Definition of etymology Merriam-Webster: 1: the history of a linguistic form (as a word) shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another, by analyzing it into its component parts, by identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral language 2: a branch of linguistics concerned with etymologies There is nothing in there about constructing new words. www.merriam-webster.com This video is a response to BionicDance's video to ZOMGitsCriss www.youtube.com This is also the comment section referenced in my video. From The Online Etymology Dictionary (which is a wonderful online tool for looking at prefixes/word combinations and how they changed): "This is a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English. Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2000 years ago." www.etymonline.com For instance, look at the differences between agnostic and aglow.
Etymology - sound change, roots & derivation (Etymology 1 of 2)
Etymology explores the origin of words - the history and development of individual words in a language. Etymology asks and tries to answer a familiar question: "where did this word come from?" This video introduces etymology as a diachronic (historical) method that seeks to recover and build the history of words. Attested and reconstructed word forms help us arrive at the etymon of the Modern English word "queen". Along the way, see some of the twists and turns that a word takes throughout its history as sounds change over time in a single language and as languages borrow words from each other. Topics include the importance of sound laws for situating single words within large-scale historical change and the role of derivational morphology in uncovering the background of words with affixes. www.nativlang.com/linguistics
Calm Teacher Role Play 3 - Etymology
I play a teacher going over a list of words with you using flash cards. This time instead of the definitions of words, I quietly talk about the etymology (history and origin) of the words, focusing on prefixes, infixes and suffixes. I was very tired while making this and so I had to cut out two etymologies that I said something wrong about., that's why they are skipped in the video so. Here are links to the other teacher videos I have done: Calm Teacher Role Play -1 www.youtube.com Calm Teacher Role Play - 2 www.youtube.com
The etymology of fruit names?

EDIT: We've been doing these "HD" videos for almost three months now, and they still look rubbish. What ARE we doing wrong?!

Etymology Of The Word Believe
Original Link: podictionary.com The podictionary word for today is believe: We live by our beliefs. That's a good thing. But I think we always have to keep checking that our beliefs are based on fact and rationale and not influenced by our desires, or worse, the desires of others. Here are a few quotations that should make us think twice; in chronological order: • Men are nearly always willing to believe what they wish. Julius Caesar • A false report, if believed during three days, may be of great service to a government. Catherine de' Medici • Since a politician never believes what he says, he is quite surprised to be taken at his word. Charles de Gaulle We live by our beliefs and that is tied up in the etymology of the word. As far as we know believe first turned up on the page 800 years ago which makes it Middle English. But it isn't evolved from a French or Latin word, it comes from an Old English word leefan or geleefan. These words themselves already had a meaning of "believe" or "to hold dear" and they and other variants like ileve and leve were still in use during the life of Geoffrey Chaucer. All of them trace back through Old Teutonic to Indo-European and actually seem to connect with the roots of the word love. What we believe is often as much about feeling as it is about fact. The gulf between belief and fact is reflected in the expression "believe it or not" by which we mean "you may not take this to heart, but I'm presenting it as a fact just the same." It ...
