What is ethnography? by Penny Harvey

The full length methods@manchester video can be found online for free at www.methods.manchester.ac.uk Ethnographic fieldwork as practiced within contemporary social anthropology is a powerful way of opening up and extending understandings of how human beings live in the world. Ethnography is a disciplined preoccupation with the enactment, articulation and transmission of social imaginaries (values, ideas) and material practices. It is a relational approach to social life in which the researcher is fully implicated. Unlike some methods, ethnography is not a technique that can be first mastered and then applied because in some ways every ethnography is unique, it is something the ethnographer does, a particular mode of attention that requires skills of patience, endurance, perspicacity, diplomacy and most importantly perhaps for the western academic the willingness to unlearn. In this sense ethnography is also not something that somebody else can easily do for you, and the empirical, the analytical and the theoretical are inter-twined from the start their relationship crafted in the writing of an ethnographic text.

Sports Fans Ethnography

For my ethnographic study I looked into the lives of college sport fanatics. Sports play a big role on college campuses and in student's lives, but for some students it almost runs their lives. Because sports are so popular in college they have created a subculture of students who have an unreal amount of dedication and obsession for their sports teams and sporting events. For over a month I attended sporting events to study fans at Syracuse University. This video serves as a brief overview on what my project covers.

You say potato, I say patattah erm... ethnography

Mike Yorke is senior course tutor at The Department of Anthropology at University College London. He is starting a new Masters Degree module in PRACTICAL ETHNOGRAPHIC AND DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING. My hidden motivation for meeting Mike was to see if I had found someone who supported my views that ethnographic research should be ring fenced from other types of research (observational and non-observational). As it turned out - and please watch all five clips - he made me fundamentally re-think what I did and what I thought I was doing. I am still reeling from this interview. Oh and what a lovely guy.

Race in the 21st Century, Ethnographic Approaches

What is the state of race relations in the US? Are we making progress toward ending racial discrimination and prejudice? What, exactly, does "race" mean? John Hartigan is Associate Professor of Anthropology and director of the Americo Paredes Center for Cultural Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. www.utexas.edu In Race in the 21st Century: Ethnographic Approaches , John Hartigan takes an anthropological look at questions such as these by introducing students to the study of race through qualitative approaches. In the first text to take an explicitly ethnographic approach, Hartigan summarizes and explains the current state of social science knowledge on race in the United States. In the process of surveying this research, Hartigan guides readers to think through basic important questions about race in relation to their own circumstances. Unlike many texts, however, this one focuses not on essential differences between racial or ethnic groups, but rather on the commonalities. The author concentrates on the particular contexts where people actively engage and respond to racial meanings and identities. In this way, he encourages readers to think critically about the meaning of race. Ideal for undergraduate courses in race and ethnicity, the anthropology of race, and cultural/human diversity, Race in the 21st Century seamlessly brings together classic and contemporary studies in one accessible volume. The author is also hosting a companion website www ...

POV: Point of View... Consumers and Ethnographers in Perspective...

This film, presented at the 2009 ACR film festival, is based on a female ethnographers research exploring young Scottish men's consumption practices. It shows how applications of mobile phones helped overcome some of the challenges the ethnographer faced in the field to generate data in a less obtrusive way. It also describes consumers own use of mobile phones to record their experiences, legitimising and authenticating their masculinity. This emphasised the importance of consumer experiences for constructing gender identities through culturally situated consumption. We suggest that the role of mobile phones advances the researchers capability for reflexivity and creates a richer understanding of consumers points of view. The applications of a mobile phone may also be of help for other ethnographers, especially videographers. It opens further possibilities for exchanging film and photographic data with informants, linking data to social networking sites and also has the potential for filming full videographies. iPhone Ethnography app debuts on iTunes store

Research agency Everyday Lives has launched its iPhone-based ethnographic research app on Apples iTunes store and revealed that a Blackberry version is in the works. The firm describes the app as a sophisticated research tool designed by ethnographic researchers for ethnographic researchers, agency planners, marketers and research respondents. Some six months in development the product allows users to record audio and video clips, take photos and make notes while observing subjects. Material can be categorised by project themes and each item is geo-tagged to store the location in which it was recorded before being sent to the researchers email account to be reviewed later.
