"El Librotraficante" Tony Diaz Defies Ethnic Studies Book Ban With Caravan to Arizona

democracynow.org - Self-described book smuggler Tony Diaz, nicknamed "El Librotraficante", is set to launch a small caravan to bring carloads of controversial books into Arizona that were recently banned by public school officials in Tucson after the city suspended its acclaimed Mexican-American Studies program due to a state ban on the teaching of ethnic studies. "When Arizona tried to erase our history, we decided to make more," Diaz says. "We've unleashed this informal network that's galvanized into a national movement... People are forming groups to read the books that have been confiscated. They have actually brought so much attention to our community that I think right now we really are on the verge of a Latino Renaissance." Arizona Ethnic Studies

CSUN students from the Chicano/a Studies and Asian American Studies Department traveled to Tucson, Arizona and the Nogales Border to show solidarity to the Save Ethnic Studies Program. CSUN students were exposed to the struggles, injustices, and discriminatory measures of HB 2281. HB 2281passed legislation that bans the curriculum of Mexican American Studies in the Tucson Unified School District. This was the third trip for CSUN students and professors. Tucson high school students effected by the ban of Ethnic Studies discussed with CSUN students the issues and impact of eliminating "Raza Studies" in Tucson, inspite of the academic success of the program. Chicano/a Studies Professor and author of the banned book in Arizona, Occupied America, Rudy Acuña gave incite as to why students come to support the Tucson community.

Reaction to Tucson's Ethnic Studies Ban

In 2012, Tucson banned its Mexican-American Studies program in compliance with a statewide ban on Ethnic Studies programs. My reaction to the ban is chronicled here in a pseudo-animated piece I made as a student in Hamline University's Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program for a class called Public Intellectual Practicum.

Tucson Orders Closure of Mexican-American School Program as Ethnic Studies Faces Nationwide Threat

DemocracyNow.org - An Arizona administrator has ruled that the public school district in Tucson must end its acclaimed Mexican-American studies program for grades K-12, saying it violates a new state law that bans the teaching of any class designed for a particular ethnic group or that "promote[s] resentment toward a race or class of people." But the program's supporters say the classes push the district's largely Latino student body to excel academically while teaching them long-neglected perspectives. Democracy Now! speaks to Tucson Mexican-American history teacher Lorenzo Lopez and his daughter, Korina, a high school sophomore. Both are plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit to stop the ban from taking effect. Also interviewed is Dr. Rodolfo Acuña, author of "Occupied America: A History of Chicanos," considered the definitive introduction to Chicano history in the United States. Dr. Acuña warns copycat laws are likely to follow in other states as part of a growing campaign against ethnic studies programs, in particular Chicano studies, throughout the country. Fight for Ethnic Studies- TUSD Board Meeting May 3

This is a short collection of video images from Tuesday night at the TUSD Board meeting. There's a dynamic history of context about the ethnic studies fight I wish I could share now, but it's the crack a dawn so i'll have to save a more robust edit of this struggle later. However, after last night, I was compelled to release more than just a short clip like last weeks brave actions by UNIDOS. What happened at the board meeting last night was unforgettable. A moment that is uniting all walks of life in Tucson who are willing to literally sacrifice their own bodies for the cause. It's awe inspiring. It's also disheartening that cruel stubbornness of a few board members has given way to political capitulation reinforced by brutal police force. Egypt this is not, but for a moment it seemed that way. I'm sure many who were present there are now coming to terms with a new movement in Tucson that is rapidly evolving into more numbers and people of all types. There will be many detractors and many lies perpetuated by those who can not understand or just too rigid to believe in real change that comes from people organizing from the below. So I offer this one piece of testimonial- despite the unsettling images of police brutality and excessive force, I never lost faith in those people who withstood the abuse and stood firm in both love and resolve. They will not be moved and they will not give up their right to a real education. For those on the outside, get to know this struggle ...

FIGHT BACK- the battle to save ethnic studies

The community of youth, students, teachers, parents, and adult allies have been coming out in mass and supporting ethnic studies in Tucson at the TUSD board meetings. There have been two meetings with proposed votes that would bring an end to the current Mexican American Studies program, but the people have resisted. The struggle continues and events from those meetings are documented in this short by JM Aragón.

Mexican Americans- Ethnic Studies

This is a Spanish II project I had. I'm a procrastinator so it kinda came together on it's own. It starts off pretty general and then gets to the political issue of the bill SB 1070 and more specifically the bill HB 2281. I loved creating this video and learning about the issue. It hurts to find so much racism when looking up "Mexican American" in a general search engine. For more information on the issue visit: saveethnicstudies.org

Tucson School District Releases List of Banned Ethnic Studies Books, Includes Shakespeare

www.democracynow.org - In news from Arizona, Tucson school district officials have released an initial list of books to be banned from the school system following last weeks' vote to suspend the district's acclaimed Mexican American Studies program due to a state ban on the teaching of ethnic studies. The banned books include: "Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years" edited by Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson; Shakespeare's play "The Tempest"; "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" by Paolo Freire; "Occupied America: A History of Chicanos" by Rodolfo Acuña; and "Chicano!: The History of the Mexican Civil Rights Movement" by F. Arturo Rosales. Salon.com reported teachers have also been informed to stay away from any books where "race, ethnicity and oppression are central themes." What is going on here in Arizona? Our legislators are ruining this state!

Arizona bill targets ethnic studies

A new law banning ethnic studies programmes has gone into effect in the southwestern US state of Arizona. The state's Latino community claim the law targets them and say similar programmes in African American, Asian and Native American studies are not affected. The law comes months after Arizona passed a controversial immigration enforcement law. Al Jazeera's Franc Contreras reports from From Tucson, Arizona.

TUSD ETHNIC STUDIES

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Supporters of the TUSD ethnic studies program took over the district's meeting room before the board meeting Tuesday night. Protestors chained themselves together and were unable to be removed by security. The start of the 6 pm meeting was delayed. The proposal before the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board would keep Mexican American Studies courses as high school level electives, but they could no longer be used to meet core state graduation requirements for social studies. Instead, the material would be included in the broader history classes that all students must take. New state superintendent John Huppenthal, who ran on a platform of eliminating the program, is now evaluating Mexican American Studies. The resolution is being proposed by TUSD Board President Mark Stegeman, who is trying to get out ahead of state sanctions. The state board of education is investigating ethnic studies and most believe will issue a report in June . The report may make changes in the program or could propose to eliminate it altogether.

Arizona's Ban on Racist 'Ethnic Studies' Classes Takes Effect

For an idea of that, see former teacher John Ward's (Ward is Hispanic) disturbing account here: tucsoncitizen.com www.standwitharizona.com http

Lawsuit filed against Arizona ethnic studies ban

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Opponents of HB 2281, a new Arizona law aimed at eliminating the ethnic studies program at the Tucson Unified School District, filed their long-threatened lawsuit Monday afternoon in Tucson. Teachers opposed to the crackdown banned together to file the suit, which names state schools superintendent Tom Horne as a defendant. The suit claims the state law violates both the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the US Constitution. Horne fought for the law. Among other things, it forbids ethnic studies programs from teaching racial solidarity and from advocating the overthrow of the US government. Horne has acknowledged that the law is aimed squarely at TUSD's program, which he says promotes "ethnic chauvinism." Until now supporters of TUSD's program have said it does not violate Horne's law. At an afternoon press conference, KGUN9's Sergio Avila asked plaintiff's attorney Richard Martinez, "If it doesn't do all those things, why even bring forward this lawsuit?"' Martinez replied, "Because in Tom Horne's eyes we do. We've already been judged guilty." Late Thursday Horne issued a statement blasting the lawsuit. "It is fundamentally wrong to divide students up according to their racial group and teach them separately. That is why HB 2281 was passed, to put an end to these divisive programs and to dividing students by race in the 21st century." The statement contained harsh words for the border activist group, Derechos Humanos. "The 'Derechos' group is an open ...
