André Rieu (born October 1, 1949) is a Dutch violinist, conductor, and composer best known for creating an international revival in waltz music with his "Johann Strauss Orchestra". The Orchestra began in 1987 with 12 members but now performs with between 40 and 50 musicians. At the time the Orchestra first toured Europe, there emerged a renewed interest in waltz music. The revival began in the Netherlands and was ignited by their recording of the Second Waltz from Shostakovich's Jazz Suites. As a result, Rieu became known as the waltz King. He and his orchestra have performed throughout Europe, in North America, and Japan. Winning a number of awards including two World Music Awards, their recordings have gone gold and platinum in many countries, including 8-times Platinum in the Netherlands. He and his orchestra went to Australia in November as part of his world tour and played 3 concerts at Melbourne's Telstra Dome from 1315 November and continued their tour throughout Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide, through to December 2008.

We begin our journey in the Spanish province of Galicia. The Romans conquered Santiago de Compostela, a harbor city that has always been associated with the sea and since the Middle Ages it was, apart from Jerusalem and Rome, the most important pilgrimage destination in Christendom. Some centuries ago, each of the large villages of the Rias Baixas prospered due to fishing, as did Pontevedra whose old town has been well-preserved with cobbled streets, intimate squares and the residential palaces of the city's former elite. Vigo is reminiscent of Liverpool in the United Kingdom and is the largest city in Galicia. In 1529, the city began to trade with South America and this brought with it a new wave of prosperity. España, Rhapsody for Orchestra (1883) The French composer Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) traveled to Spain in 1882 with his wife. The sights, sounds and especially the dance rhythms of that España inspired this sensuous, vivacious work for orchestra, which made Chabrier an overnight celebrity in Paris when it was premiered in 1883. Chabrier wrote in a letter to the conductor Charles Lamoureux, "My rhythms, my tunes will arouse the whole orchestra to a feverish pitch of excitement; and you too will feel obliged to hold [your assistant] in your arms, so voluptuous will be my melodies." In this 1940 recording, Thomas Beecham leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

A España Muchas veces he escuchado esta hermosa y emblemática canción que muchos califican como himno nacional. Dyango logró vestirla con una letra que roza la perfección pues esta a la altura de la música definiendo nuestra tierra en sólo unas estrofas. Nadie ha escrito una letra tan lograda como él para esta pieza celestial. Pero no se limita a eso, la canta con un sentimiento de desgarrada devoción pero de determinación y entusiasmo al mismo tiempo, sentimiento que ya de por si se identifican con nuestro país. No hay creación musical que describa mejor lo que es España inspirando la diversidad de toda ella pero a la vez los profundos lazos de nobleza que la unen. En los tiempos que corren me he sentido más tentado que nunca a ponerle imágenes. Ha sido fácil, Dyango logró ponerlas en mi cabeza con su magnifico talento. He intentado reflejar lo mejor que he podido lo que me inspira, algo que excede mi creación, creo que no he podido estar a la altura ni de Dyango ni de la canción pero vaya desde aquí mi humilde homenaje a Dyango, a la canción y como no, a España, que es la musa que ha logrado todo esto. En el año 219 aC, el cartaginés Aníbal toma la ciudad de Sagunto, aliada de Roma, dando comienzo la II Guerra Púnica. Finalizada la guerra de manera victoriosa para Roma, ésta pretende hacerse con el control de los ricos territorios mineros de la Península. Así, hacia el año 201 aC ya controla una amplia franja a lo largo del Mediterráneo y hasta la Andalucía Occidental, con ciudades como Barcino, Tarraco, Carthago Nova o Gades. En el año 120 aC, los romanos han conseguido una extensión que supone más de las dos terceras partes peninsulares, estableciendo colonias o ciudades como Emerita Augusta, Corduba, Toletum, Clunia o Caesaraugusta, entre otras. La última etapa de la conquista romana finaliza hacia el año 14 aC, cuando sus legiones consiguen integrar la franja norte peninsular y establecer allí ciudades como Lucus Augusti, Asturica Augusta o Pompaelo. La administración romana de Hispania se plasma ya desde el primer momento de la conquista en la división de los territorios bajo su control en dos provincias, Citerior, la más cercana a Roma, y Ulterior, la más lejana. Los recientes hallazgos realizados en los yacimientos arqueológicos de la sierra de Atapuerca, en Burgos, han permitido localizar a los más antiguos pobladores de España y de Europa, determinando la existencia de una nueva especie, el Homo antecessor, y demostrando así que en Europa ya vivían seres humanos hace más de 800.000 años, mucho antes de lo que se pensaba. De paso se ha conseguido encontrar la deseada pieza clave de un complejo puzzle genealógico, el antepasado común que une a nuestra especie, homo sapiens sapiens, con otra con la que estuvimos coexistiendo durante mucho tiempo, el Hombre de Neanderthal. Pero la aportación española al conocimiento de la Prehistoria ha conocido otros capítulos de gran importancia. Uno de los más destacados corresponde a la Cueva de Altamira, pieza imprescindible para el estudio del Arte Paleolítico. Sus pobladores vivían de la caza, la pesca, la recolección y el marisqueo. Vestían prendas muy diversas confeccionadas con pieles de animales, que les protegían del clima frío. Su indumentaria no se diferenciaba sustancialmente de la actual: pantalones, casacas, capuchas, chubasqueros, botas... Estas gentes realizaron las pinturas en el Paleolítico Superior, hace entre 18.000 y 14.000 años.
