Fracture Drilling - Environmental Disaster / Documentary Video
What really goes on with fracture drilling. What you don't know WILL kill you. Courtesy of LinkTV. Hydraulic fracturing is the propagation of fractures in a rock layer caused by the presence of a pressurized fluid. Hydraulic fractures may form naturally, as in the case of veins or dikes, or may be man-made in order to release petroleum, natural gas, coal seam gas, or other substances for extraction, where the technique is often called fracking or hydrofracking. This type of fracturing, known colloquially as a frack job (or frac job) is done from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations. The energy from the injection of a highly-pressurized fracking fluid creates new channels in the rock which can increase the extraction rates and ultimate recovery of fossil fuels. The fracture width is typically maintained after the injection by introducing a proppant into the injected fluid. Proppant is a material, such as grains of sand, ceramic, or other particulates, that prevent the fractures from closing when the injection is stopped. The practice of hydraulic fracturing has come under scrutiny internationally due to concerns about the environmental impact, health and safety, and has been suspended or banned in some countries
The Top Five Environmental Disasters that Didn't Happen
For this year's Earth Day celebration, Reason.tv is proud to present "The Top Five Environmental Disasters that Didn't Happen." The environmental movement began in 1962 when Rachel Carson published her best-selling book Silent Spring. And ever since, chicken littles have warned us about imminent environmental disasters that ultimately didn't happen. We all worried needlessly about acid rain, expanding deserts and global cooling, but these failed predictions weren't quite dire enough to make our list. To find out which prophecies of doom did make our list, you'll need to watch Reason.tv's "Top Five Environmental Disasters that Didn't Happen." Approximately 7 minutes. Produced by Feine, Manning, Jensen, Bragg, Swain, Epstein and Gillespie. Narrated by Melissa Palmer. Special thanks to Ron Bailey and Julian Morris. Environmental disaster: Gas tanker crash
VICTORIA -- Clean-up crews were working furiously today to remove gasoline soaked soil from a stretch of the Malahat Highway. A tanker truck crashed into the rock face Saturday spilling thousands of litres of fuel. RCMP believe alcohol could be a factor in the crash; the driver was arrested and released as crash analysts continue to investigate. "Potentially it could have been disastrous", says Chief Bob Beckett from Langford Fire Rescue" From a safety standpoint; fire and or explosion given the nature of the product being carried in the transport truck". That risk meant fire officials had to close the highway for 22 hours. Beckett says it was a necessary inconvenience. "Safety of the first responders; fire-fighters, police, paramedics, and those involved in righting the truck back up onto its wheels has to come first", he says. /A\ News reporter Stephen Andrew says the stench around the area where the truck crashed is at times overwhelming. The Ministry of the Environment says crews could be scooping up the contaminated soil well into tomorrow. But, the crash site is just the beginning of the devastation. Dan Claxton, Fisheries Manager for the Tsawout First Nation says though most of the gas has evaporated, underneath there's still a residue. "When you step on it" he says as he disturbs the water with his wading boots "You can see the sheen and the rainbows coming up from underneath the rocks". The gasoline that poured into the Goldstream River killed thousands of fish ...

Nostradamus 2012 | Doomsday
It's a year that many have prophesied will bring a catastrophic end to life as we know it. Whatever is in store—a massive cosmic collision, a global environmental disaster, an Armageddon-like religious showdown, or a more subtle transformation—many believe that 2012 will mark a major shift in the history of our planet. But what is there to substantiate such fears? A detailed, historical investigation of this chilling prophecy is the mission of Nostradamus 2012, an exciting HISTORY special that casts the doomsday warning in a frighteningly modern context. December 21, 2012 is bearing down on us with alarming speed. Whether or not we are able to collectively heed the warnings and affect a course to avert disaster may be the defining moment of the modern age. Whatever is in store--a massive cosmic collision, a global environmental disaster, an Armageddon-like religious showdown, or a more subtle transformation--many believe that December 21, 2012 will mark a major shift in the history of our planet. There is no cogent distinction between the sobering facts and hysterical fiction--what, if any, modern scientific proof exists? Is there any other compelling evidence throughout history that 2012 will be a year of unprecedented, deadly upheaval? This special looks for the parallels between the nightmarish daily headlines and the 2012 prophecies from Nostradamus and others. From the mystical realms of the Guatemalan jungles to the Hopi elders and Mayan shaman to respected thinkers ...

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Execs Escape Punishment as Disaster Continues To Impact Sea life. 1 of 2
DemocracyNow.org - Two years since the worst offshore oil spill in US history, we look at its impact on the Gulf of Mexico's residents and wildlife even as no BP officials have faced criminal prosecution for the disaster. Eleven workers died when the Deepwater Horizon well exploded and almost five million barrels of crude oil leaked into the ocean before the well was plugged after 51 days. BP maintains the Gulf is rapidly recovering thanks to the company's efforts, but Al Jazeera reporter Dahr Jamail describes how scientists say shrimp, fish and crabs in the Gulf of Mexico have been deformed by oil and chemicals released during the spill clean-up effort. Meanwhile, ProPublica's environmental reporter Abrahm Lustgarten says the company failed to learn from past mistakes that could have helped avoid the explosion. He is the author of the new book, "Run to Failure: BP and the Making of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster." Governments vs. Markets: Julian Morris on Environmental Protection
Which does a better job of protecting the environment: governments or markets? Reason Foundation's Vice President of Research Julian Morris spoke at Reason Foundation's annual Reason Weekend and challenged the idea that regulations and energy subsidies will save us from environmental disasters. In fact, they help cause them. When people are driven by profits and protected by property rights, Morris argues, environmentally friendly products will develop naturally. UN slams Shell over Nigeria oil pollution
A UN report says it will cost up to $1bn and take 30 years to clean up the damage done by decades of drilling by Shell. Oil exploration in Nigeria's south for several decades has had a debilitating effect on the environment of the region. Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, has been accused of serious failures in its handling of the pollution in the Niger Delta and shirking its responsibility. Activists have demanded that Shell's licence be revoked for the environmental disaster. But with 90 per cent of the government's revenue coming from petroleum exports, oil companies seem to have clear political leverage over the issue. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from southern Nigeria.

Exposed BP Oil Spill: Fraudulent, Faked, Hoax! Disappearing Vanishing Evaporating Dissipating Oil?
This series of videos was taken directly from the MSM, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, & CNN, NBC, & Fox News. Now we are asked by these MSM teleprompter readers to believe that the "Worst Environmental Disaster In US History," has just disappeared? We are asked to believe that just like that all the oil vanished, dissipated, dissolved, & was broken down by microbes, all in 2 weeks from the stoppage of the leaky well? We are to believe that it was broken up & down, unlike the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, because the Gulf water was warmer? We are to believe that it disintegrated in nothingness, "The Worst Environmental Disaster In US History," is all gone because the "oil" is a lighter "oil" than the crude dumped into the Sound in Alaska? Does that make sense to call it lighter when from just about every picture, every video, every print media, this light crude can and is almost universally referred to as thick goopy gel & tar balls? Now that the BP Gulf Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been debunked as a fraud, a over exaggeration, a doomsday extinction level event that never was, where does that leave us? The most recently released records (3 AUG 2010) show that some 2.15 million gallons of toxic lethal chemical corexit dispersant was sprayed and injected into the beautiful water of the Gulf of Mexico. Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful that the oil is going away suspiciously fast, but the dispersants going to go away as well? Dr Riki Ott and Dr Susan Shaw sure don't seem to think so ...
The Karakoram Highway - from China to Pakistan
The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters. The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades. In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time. BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico: One Year Later
Also available on our web site launchpad39a.com BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico One Year Later British Petroleum, more commonly known as BP, is a global oil and gas company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the third-largest energy company and fourth-largest company in the world measured by revenues and one of the six oil and gas giants. On 20 April 2010, the semi-submersible exploratory offshore drilling rigm Deepwater Horizon, exploded after a blowout; it sank two days later, killing 11 people. This blowout in the Macondo Prospect field in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in a partially capped oil well one mile below the surface of the water. Experts estimate the gusher to be flowing at 35000 to 60000 barrels per day of oil. The exact flow rate was uncertain due to the difficulty of installing measurement devices at that depth and was a matter of ongoing debate. The resulting oil slick covered at least 2500 square miles, fluctuating from day to day depending on weather conditions. It threatened the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. The drilling rig, DeepWater Horizon, was owned and operated by Transocean Ltd on behalf of BP, which is the majority owner of the Macondo oil field. At the time of the explosion, there were 126 crew on board; seven were employees of BP and 79 of Transocean. The US Government has named BP the responsible party, and officials have committed to hold the company accountable for all clean-up costs and other ...

The BP Oil Spill: One Year Later
"I think the environmental impact of this disaster is likely to be very, very modest," claimed BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward following last year's Deepwater Horizon disaster on April 20. But in fact, "The spill here in the Gulf of Mexico is the worst environmental disaster in the history of our continent." Greenpeace has been working with independent scientists from universities around the country to find out what has really happened to the oil, and what the long term impacts will be on this critical, fragile ecosystem. Stay tuned.
