The United Nations plans to use its upcoming UN Conference on "Sustainable Development" (UN CSD or Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro to amass a vast array of unprecedented new powers and literally re-shape civilization, the global economy, and even peoples' thoughts, according to official documents. All of it will be done in the name of transitioning toward a so-called "green economy." Among the new authorities being sought by the world body are global carbon taxes, wealth redistribution amounting to trillions of dollars per year, and a barrage of programs dealing with everything from poverty and education to health and resource allocation. Virtually no realm of human activity will be unaffected by the scheme, which analysts have described as a "mammoth exercise in global social engineering." The global transformation agenda was laid out in a recently published report entitled "Working towards a Balanced and Inclusive Green Economy: A United Nations System-wide Perspective." The document — prepared by a group of more than 35 UN agencies and assorted international institutions under the banner of the UN "Environmental Management Group" (UNEMG) — explains the goals of the global body's upcoming "sustainability" summit. Environmental Group Says Delaware River Is Fifth Most Polluted
Industrial facilities dumped 8.5 million pounds of toxic chemicals into New Jersey's lakes, streams and rivers in 2010. That's according to a report by Environment New Jersey, a non-profit environmental activist group. The group documented and analyzed dangerous levels of pollutants discharged into America's waterways by compiling toxic chemical releases reported to the US Environmental Protection Agency. Arsenic, mercury and benzene are among the toxic chemicals discharged according to Megan Fitzpatrick, of Environment New Jersey. She says exposure to these chemicals is linked to cancer, developmental disorders and reproductive disorders.

Environmental fears over cruise ship wreck
Rescuers have found another body in the wreckage of the Costa Concordia, bringing to seven the current death toll following a maritime accident off the coast of Italy, the daily Italian newspaper La Stampa said. While the captain is being blamed for the incident, the Costa Concordia liner has now also shifted and there are growing fears that leaking oil could cause an environmental disaster. Bad weather conditions have hampered rescue efforts and attempts to remove the 2400 tonnes of diesel fuel and 50 tonnes of oil. Al Jazeera's Nazanin Sadri reports.

Earth Hour Environmental Action Set for This Weekend
BY STEVEN SPARKMAN ANCHOR CARISSA LOETHEN It's billed as the world's largest voluntary environmental action. Earth Hour 2012 is scheduled for Saturday, March 31 at 8:30-9:30 pm local time. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to turn off the lights. "With hundreds of millions of people across seven continents building a movement for change." The event started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. In 2011, 135 countries and more than 5000 cities participated. The World Wildlife Fund organizes the event, encouraging participants to turn off all non-essential lighting to raise awareness on the need for climate change action. A WWF spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald: "I sometimes look at Earth Hour like the New Year's Eve for the environment. It's a chance to have a conversation ... about your local environment, your actions and their impact on the environment." Landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, and the Empire State Building take part in the event. And this year, it'll all be documented — from space. Dutch astronaut André Kuipers will be posting pictures taken from the International Space Station as the event moves round the globe. (Source: André Kuipers) But Earth Hour isn't without detractors.
