How an Engineer folds a T-Shirt

I know what I'm doing this weekend UPDATE: To the sudden explosion of people who commented on this, allow me to clarify a few things. I'm not an engineer, I am a nerd and do like making odd stuff like this occasionally. I made one of these devices using this vid and posted it up here so a mate of mine in Canada could see it. To the people leaving rather idiotic comments about me needing a life, to each his own, but someone did this in plastic and is probably making millions. I didn't make the video, something I should have clarified, I don't own the company shown, and yes I know they use em in department stores, that would be where I got the idea of making my own, seeing as this probably took bit of nutting out to make I think it qualifies as engineering, as most engineers I know like complex solutions to simple problems Lastly, it's a bit of fun. Remember that? Or is a pre-requisite to have all whimsy forcibly extracted when you get an internet connection?

IBM Fellow Grady Booch: Why Engineering?

Grady Booch is recognized internationally for his innovative work in software architecture, software engineering, and collaborative development environments. He has devoted his life's work to improving the art and the science of software development. Grady served as IBM's Chief Scientist of Rational Software Corporation since its founding in 1981 and through its acquisition by IBM in 2003. He now is part of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center serving as Chief Scientist for Software Engineering, where he continues his work on the Handbook of Software Architecture and also leads several projects in software engineering that are beyond the constraints of immediate product horizons. Grady continues to engage with customers working on real problems and is working to build deep relationships with academia and other research organizations around the world. Grady is one of the original authors of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and was also one of the original developers of several of Rational's products. Grady has served as architect and architectural mentor for numerous complex software-intensive systems around the world in just about every domain imaginable.

LEGO Engineering: From Kindergarten to College

Google Tech Talks December 19, 2008 ABSTRACT For the past 10 years, Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach has been working with the LEGO Group to bring engineering into every classroom as a way to teach creativity, teamwork, and systems engineering as well as math, science, and literacy. We believe that as the world becomes more technical, and more dependent on technology, it is imperative that those who vote and who make policy understand the fundamentals of science and engineering so that they will make informed decisions on policies like developing a sustainable energy plan or reducing global warming. We do this by bringing engineering into the pre-college classroom and challenging students to design and build solutions to open-ended problems. Chris Rogers will show a number of examples from around the world of how teachers have used LEGO Robots to teach everything from how to graph to how to problem-solve. From LEGO snowplows (made by 1st graders) to automated hamburger makers (made by 13 year olds) to a LEGO robot driven by a fruit fly (made by a doctoral student), students have been excited, innovative, and very enthusiastic to learn. He will conclude by explaining how you can help affect your local school and classroom. Kids (of all ages) welcome. Speaker: Chris Rogers Chris got all three of his degrees at Stanford Univ., where he worked with John Eaton on his thesis looking at particle motion in a boundary layer flow. From Stanford, he went to Tufts ...

Industrial and Systems Engineers Make a Difference Everywhere

Industrial and Systems Engineers are among the most successful engineering professionals because they rely on a combination of technical depth and business fundamentals. ISEs are people who get excited about solving problems - and find the quickest, fastest and best way to meet important objectives. They apply their knowledge and skills to define and improve systems - of people, machines, materials, and energy. There is a great demand for ISE professionals in the United States and internationally, with US starting salaries in 2010 between $55000 and $65000. ISEs discuss their work, the satisfaction they experience from their jobs, and the impact they make in the world. ISEs are employed in a wide range of industries such as defense, healthcare, consumer products, financial services, logistics, transportation, energy, entertainment, aviation, manufacturing of all types, and many more. Any industry or enterprise involving complex decisions and scarce resources recruits Industrial and Systems Engineers. There is no better institution at which to study Industrial and Systems Engineering than the University of Southern California (USC). Focused, intellectually fit, and blending the latest quantitative tools with a systems view of problems and a special facility for reasoning, Epstein ISE Department graduates are the USC Viterbi School of Engineering's consummate economic competitors. This video was sponsored by the Council of Industrial Engineering Academic Department Heads ...

Engineering an Empire - The Persians - Part 1of5

The Persian Empire was one of the most mysterious civilizations in the ancient world. Persia became an empire under the Cyrus the Great, who created a policy of religious and cultural tolerance that became the hallmark of Persian rule. Engineering feats include an innovative system of water management; a cross-continent paved roadway stretching 1500 miles; a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea; and the creation of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum of Maussollos. The rivalry between Persia and Athens led to a 30-year war known as the Persian Wars, the outcome of which helped create the world we live in today. Peter Weller hosts.

True marvel of engineering..

The story goes like this: Several years ago, Rockwell International decided to get into the heavy duty transmission business. We were getting ready to tape our first introduction video, as a warm up, the professional narrator began what has become a legend within the trucking industry. This man should have won an academy for his stellar performance. Now remember this is strictly off the cuff, nothing is written down, this became the biggest talk in the industry, vs our new product which we were introducing. I think you will enjoy this once in a lifetime performance from this gentleman.

Engineering Data Analysis (with R and ggplot2)

Google Tech Talk (more info below) June 6, 2011 Presented by Hadley Wickham, Assistant Professor, Dobelman Family Junior Chair, Department of Statistics, Rice University. ABSTRACT Data analysis, the process of converting data into knowledge, insight and understanding, is a critical part of statistics, but there's surprisingly little research on it. In this talk I'll introduce some of my recent work, including a model of data analysis. I'm a passionate advocate of programming that data analysis should be carried out using a programming language, and I'll justify this by discussing some of the requirement of good data analysis (reproducibility, automation and communication). With these in mind, I'll introduce you to a powerful set of tools for better understanding data: the statistical programming language R, and the ggplot2 domain specific language (DSL) for visualisation.

MyCoolJob: Industrial Engineer

Tim Leopold, and industrial engineer with Honda, talks about his job. This video is being used as part of mycooljob.org, a production of WOSU Public media. Mycooljob.org is designed for middle-schoolers and early high school students, to give them a taste of the real world after graduation, to show the pluses -- and minuses -- of real jobs. Interviews and photos of the professionals are paired with videos of them, as well as interactive blogs. The project was funded by a grant through E-Tech, which specializes in using new technology so that Ohio learners will succeed in the world of tomorrow. The Columbus Dispatch also contributed to the site, offering free job-related content from its pages. Four major career fields are highlighted: Engineering, Information Technology (IT), Arts and Communication, and Health Sciences, all of which will be in demand in the next five to ten years, the same timeframe in which students looking at the site will graduate. In all, 15 full-time professionals offered to be part of the site. They share stories about their professional lives, which almost never follow a direct path, in an effort to demonstrate that career paths are never a straight line. Each voice allows students to meet and get honest advice from people who love what they do for a living, and find out why.
