The Empire State Building
Recorded September 14, 2008. The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York City at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in New York City and New York State. The Empire State Building is the second tallest skyscraper in the Americas (surpassed only by the Sears Tower) and the 9th tallest in the World. It is also the 4th tallest freestanding structure in the Americas and the 12th tallest in the world. In 1964, floodlights were added to illuminate the top of the building at night, in colors chosen to match seasonal and other events, such as St. Patrick's Day and Christmas. The floodlights bathed the building in red, white, and blue for several months after the destruction of the World Trade Center. The Empire State Building has one of the most popular outdoor observatories in the world, having been visited by over 110 million people. The 86th-floor observation deck offers impressive 360-degree views of the city. There is a second observation deck on the 102nd floor that is open to the public. It is completely enclosed and much smaller than the first one. From: timvp.com

Empire State Building Goes Green | Nightly Business Report | PBS | Planet Forward
PBS Airdate: January 20, 2011 Retrofitting the Empire State Building (NYC) for energy efficiency will pay for itself in three years. The cost savings of green building renovation. www.pbs.org SUSIE GHARIB: In our "Planet Forward" segment tonight, we head to New York City. We look at how one of the world`s most recognizable buildings is going green. The Empire State building has been a landmark for almost 80 years. But when it comes to office space, it has lots of competition in newer, more energy efficient buildings. Planet Forward`s Frank Sesno walks us through the building`s big makeover and the energy cost savings it achieved. FRANK SESNO, PLANET FORWARD: What`s old is new again: in this case, possibly the most iconic structure in the world and where innovation now meets energy efficiency and the New York state of mind. Devin Greene, and Kristina Sgueglia, Plant Forward students at the George Washington University heard the Empire State building was getting new windows, so they hit the streets. Just how many windows are there? SURACE: We took the glass out. We pulled it all apart. We vigorously cleaned it. And we did something else. We re-used all the glass in the building. We took those dual-paned windows and made them R-8. The "R" value is a technical measurement of the resistance to heat flow so the higher the number, the better. Higher "R" value windows are built in a unique way. They have multiple chambers separated by suspended film. That clear film goes in. It ...

B-25 Bomber Hits Empire State Building (1945)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org On Saturday, July 28, 1945, Lieutenant Colonel William Franklin Smith, Jr. was piloting a B-25 Mitchell bomber on a routine personnel transport mission from Boston to LaGuardia Airport. At 9:40 am, the plane crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building, between the 78th and 80th floors, carving an 18 ft (5.5 m) x 20 ft (6.1 m) hole in the building where the offices of the National Catholic Welfare Council were located. One engine shot through the side opposite the impact and flew as far as the next block where it landed on the roof of a nearby building, starting a fire that destroyed a penthouse. The other engine and part of the landing gear plummeted down an elevator shaft. The resulting fire was extinguished in 40 minutes. It is still the only fire at such a height that was ever successfully controlled. Fourteen people were killed in the incident, and elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver was injured. After rescuers decided to transport her on an elevator which they did not know had weakened cables, it plunged 75 stories. She survived the plunge, which still stands as the Guinness World Record for the longest survived elevator fall recorded. Despite the damage and loss of life, the building was open for business on many floors on the following Monday. The crash helped spur the passage of the long-pending Federal Tort Claims Act of 1946, as well as the insertion of retroactive provisions into the law ...

At The Top Of The Empire State Building ( 102nd Floor Indoor Observatory ) Sunday 8 April 2012
This is another video of the Empire State Building, but this time we go a little bit higher to experience the 102nd Floor. This is the highest anyone in general public is allowed to go, in a little round room at the top just before the Antenna begins. The only people who are allowed to go higher are the people changing the bulb at the tip top of the building ( You would never catch me doing that! ). This video has more detail than the previous video on the 86th floor, because it was scary being outdoors in the wind 1500 feet above the streets of New York City. This has to be the most breathtaking experience I have had. In this, you can see the World Trade Center's Freedom Tower ( Yet not completed ), Central Park, The Chrysler Building, the GE building, and also a sky-high view of the streets below - The Cabs are Tiny! Please enjoy this video. Please like, comment and subscribe it would help so much :)

The Empire State Building - Anthony E. Malkin
The Empire State Building is a global icon. In 2006, the building was a hollow shell of its prior glory, its interior largely untouched for 30 to 40 years. Mr. Malkin will discuss how the $550 million "Empire State ReBuilding" program transformed it into a 21st century trophy, serving the needs of tenants, broadcasters, and visitors with restored grandeur and the latest technology. Ground-breaking energy efficiency work integrated in the building has proven to be a disruptive model challenging the accepted definition of "green." This retrofitting has raised questions as to the importance of the Empire State Building's iconic status and its future development. Anthony E. Malkin received his BA from Harvard College in 1985 and joined Malkin Holdings in 1989. He is now president of the firm and its affiliates, including W&H Properties. Mr. Malkin has been a leader in existing building energy efficient retrofits. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the Real Estate Roundtable and Chair of its Sustainability Policy Advisory Committee, the Advisory Council of the NRDC's Center for Market Innovation, the Board of Governors of the Real Estate Board of New York, and a board member of the sustainable forestry management company Greenwood Resources.

THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
The Empire State Building is cemented in both New York and US History. Built during the Depression, the building was the centre of a competition between Walter Chrysler (Chrysler Corp.) and John Jakob Raskob (creator of General Motors) to see who could build the tallest building. To speed construction, the building's posts, beams, windows and window frames were made in factories and put together on the site. 60000 tons of steel was brought in from the steel mills in Pennsylvania, 310 miles away, by train, barges and trucks Excavation Began: January 22, 1930 Construction Commenced: 17th March 1930 Framework rose at a rate of 4.5 stores per week.
