They Drive by Night: Starring Emlyn Williams and Ernest Thesiger (1938 Movie)
thefilmarchive.org They Drive by Night is a 1938 British black-and-white, crime thriller, directed by Arthur B. Woods starring Ronald Shiner as Charlie, the café proprietor. It was produced by Warner Brothers - First National Productions. The film is based on the novel of the same name by James Curtis. The picture is sometimes confused with the 1940 American film, They Drive by Night, based on the novel The Long Haul by AI Bezzerides and featuring George Raft and Humphrey Bogart. "Shorty" Matthews (Emlyn Williams) having recently been released from prison visits his girlfriend in London only to discover her murdered. Fearing he will be wrongly accused of being the culprit he disappears amongst the long-distance lorry driving community. Meanwhile, the real killer, unassuming ex-schoolteacher Walter Hoover (Ernest Thesiger), continues to prey on London women. As Shorty had feared he has become the main suspect. He returns to London with old flame Molly to prove his innocence. Emlyn Williams Tribute
Emlyn Williams is one of those character actors you've probably seen, but he hides himself so well behind the characters he plays, if you're like me, you might never have thought to find out his name. But if you've seen Alfred Hitchcock's 1939 film "Jamaica Inn," I'll bet you remember the scene-stealing "dirty little blackguard" Harry the Pedlar. Since no one else seems to have done one yet, I felt he deserved a fan video commemorating his long and varied career. I wracked my brain for weeks trying to come up with a song to go with the clips (which as you know if you've ever done one of these videos, is the often hardest part!). But then my favorite group, The Who, came to the rescue yet a second time (this being my second video) with their classic "Behind Blue Eyes." Since Williams has played so many unsavory characters, the lyrics "No one knows what it's like to be the bad man ..." seemed really fitting ... but, hmm, "blue eyes"? That might not be your first impression of him after seeing Harry or some of his other "darker" roles, but take a closer look. I first "discovered" Emlyn Williams through the films of another great actor, Robert Newton, who continues to influence pop culture through his definitive performances as Long John Silver and Blackbeard in the 1950s. He and Williams were pitted against each other in four different films, so you'll see lots of them duking it out together here. Traffic Congestion Sycamore Street Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire, Wales
9am Wed 21st September 2011. An example of the congestion in Sycamore Street Newcastle Emlyn with lorries heading to and from the ancient Teifi Bridge. Carmarthen County Council has given permission for a new large supermarket development 100 yards from this spot which they admit will increase traffic flows both here, and on the main A484 road. Both routes into Emlyn are already congested particularly at school opening and closing time, but no improvements will be made - or can be made - to Sycamore Street to accommodate the extra traffic.

Emlyn Hughes International Soccer ZX Spectrum
To many, Emlyn Hughes International Soccer is the best soccer game on not just the Spectrum but on the 8-bit home computers and possibly on any system known to mankind. It is probably the most complete soccer game for it's time, the scrolling, the control, the options you had, it all made up the champion of soccer games. Simply brilliant. Sadly Emlyn Hughes passed away on November 9, 2004 from a brain tumour aged 57, he left us though many wonderful memories, as a player, as a team captain on A Question of Sport and as a person.
