A Gentle Introduction to Embedded Systems Programming

Want to do some embedded software? Or worse, did you get handed a project and just want to know what is going on? There are some concepts you'll need to understand: volatile variables, hardware registers, static keywords, memory maps, bit manipulation and function pointers, oh my! This webcast walks step-by-step through the most important concepts a software engineer will need to get started on the path to embedded systems. About Elecia White: Elecia White has worked on DNA scanners, inertial measurement units for airplanes and race cars, toys for preschoolers, a gunshot location system for catching criminals, and assorted other medical and consumer devices. She is the founder of Logical Elegance, an embedded systems consulting company based in San Jose. Elecia has developed strong skills in signal processing, hardware integration, complex system design, and performance. Having been through FAA and FDA certification processes, she understands the importance of producing quality designs and how they lead to quality implementations. Elecia has spent several years in management roles but enjoys hands-on engineering and the thrill of delivering excellent products. While continuing to provide leadership and mentoring, she prefers to focus on the technical aspects of a project. A graduate of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA, Elecia enjoys sharing her passion for science, engineering and interesting gizmos, particularly how these things can make the world a better place.

Designing with 10GbE for Real-Time Embedded Systems

Today, an increasing number of military system architects are designing 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) into their real-time embedded applications. Commercial markets are driving technology innovation in order to service Internet-savvy consumers that demand 24/7 connectivity. As a result, many high-bandwidth network interface cards (NIC) exist and it is tempting to integrate these commercial solutions into defense applications. But it's not enough to simply grab these broadly aimed solutions right off the shelf. There are unique challenges to address when designing real-time systems for defense applications.

Source Boston 2010: Embedded System Hacking and My Plot to Take Over The World 1/5

Clip 1/5 Speaker: Paul Asadoorian, PaulDotCom It seems that as Moore's law is proven time and time again, we as a society are seeing more and more embedded systems help us in our daily lives. Embedded or purpose-built systems those that perform a specific function â are contained in the carriers of our data, from your computer to your online backing site, from the coffee shop network back to your corporate VPN. Each time we use the computer on our home cable modem network, print an important document, or use a wireless network there is typically some kind of embedded system involved. While embedded systems have made our lives easier, security is largely an afterthought if it's a thought at all. Embedded systems simplify tasks for the end user, but implement very little security. This presentation analyzes common vulnerabilities in popular embedded systems that carry sensitive data every day. It will demostrate the abundance of these systems and vulnerabilities by using public source and new scanning methods. Solving the problem is more difficult, but starts with changing both the developers and user's perception of embedded systems technology. In this presentation we will cover: - Finding embedded system vulnerabilities on a large scale - Ways to exploit embedded vulnerabilities and hide from the end user - Why controlling embedded systems is so powerful (and how they could be used to take over the world) - Ways to mitigate the potential threat - Explore some longer term ...

Certified Embedded C - Seminar 1 (Part 1 of 2)

This video is taken from our training course on "Programming techniques for reliable embedded systems". The focus of this 5-day introductory course is on the design and implementation of reliable embedded systems. Techniques for the development of reliable embedded systems are - clearly - of great concern in safety-critical markets (eg the aerospace, medical and automotive industries), where system failures can have fatal consequences. However, embedded processors now also have an enormous impact in much broader areas of product development, including high-end consumer applications such as washing machines and set-top boxes. Manufacturers need to maximise the reliability of all such systems in order to reduce the cost of warranty repairs, minimise product recalls and ensure repeat orders. Using a practical mixture of informal seminars and "hands on" training sessions, this course has been designed to introduce you to the key skills needed to design and implement reliable embedded systems in a wide range of different industry sectors. All programming examples (and exercises) are in 'C' — and the MISRA C guidelines are introduced in Day 2 of the course. All of the seminars from this 5-day course are included (in full) on our TouTube channel. By viewing these videos, you will learn about the benefits that can be obtained by developing reliable embedded systems using time-triggered (TT) architectures. By the end of the course, you will understand both the strengths — and ...
