From the first log shanty dwelling and a recorded population of only 14 people back in 1837, the City of Elkhorn Wisconsin has grown into a close-knit community of homes and businesses surrounded by rolling farmland. Many of the original homes built in the mid 1800's have been lovingly restored to their original appearance and provide a historic balance to the newer housing available throughout the area. One of the significant historic homes is known as "The Webster House" former home to composer Joseph Philbrick Webster who wrote more than 1000 songs before his death in 1875. The City's name was given by Colonel Samuel Phoenix, who declared "Elk Horn" when he spotted a rack of elk antlers caught in a tree. Located in the exact center of Walworth County, Elkhorn became the county seat and was recently ranked #14 of the "100 Best Small Towns in America" proving that the current population of over 9000 hasn't forgotten its heritage and values. Elkhorn is also famous for music, with both the Getzen Company and Frank Holton & Company having built factories to produce the finest band instruments that are in use around the world. The music continues today in the city's historic bandshell where the Holton-Elkhorn Band performs concerts on summer evenings. Since the 1950's Elkhorn has been recognized as "The Christmas Card Town" after the Ford Motor Company commissioned artist Cecile Johnson to create paintings that were later published as Christmas Cards. Elkhorn Slough
Elkhorn Slough is one of the largest and last remaining coastal wetlands in California. It is one of only 17 estuarine reserves in the US. Located at the center of Monterey Bay, it is home to all kinds of wildlife - otters, sea lions, 350 species of birds, fish and hundreds of invertebrates. North Face Elkhorn 0 Degree Sleeping Bag Test (32 Degrees)
The North Face Elkhorn 0 degree sleeping bag is my favorite sleeping bag if I can use it. It is synthetic, so the North Face Elkhorn has a downside of it cannot really get wet or else your screwed. So I took it out in 32 degree weather to see how fast it could warm up and what temperature it could heat up to in 32 degree weather. If you know about sleeping bags you know they do not always work in the temp the state, I have used this bag down to 5 degrees and it has held up nicely, but I never got any readings. So this is the start of some testing I am doing on many sleeping bags and blanket configurations in different temperatures. The North Face Elkhorn tested out very well by getting to 70 degrees within 10 minutes of me being in 32 degree weather for 10 minutes before getting in the bag. The North Face Elkhorn uses synthetic Heatshield Optimal Technology™ SL (HOT) uses hollowcore poly fibers as its insulation, and it works very well. [HD] Elkhorn - A Montana Ghost Town - near Boulder, Montana, MT
Stomp around with us in Elkhorn in the southwestern part of our state of Montana. Silver was initially discovered in the Elkhorn Mountains and over $14 million in silver was carried from the mines in the area. In 1890, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act passed, creating a high demand for Elkhorn's silver. During this peak period, Elkhorn boasted 2500 inhabitants, a school, hotel, church, stores, saloons, and brothels. Unlike most mining towns, Elkhorn was populated mostly by married European immigrants. In 1893 the Fraternity Hall was constructed for social gatherings, and still remains as one of the most well-preserved buildings in modern Elkhorn. In the years following, the silver boom and Elkhorn's prosperity began to lessen as the desire for silver decreased. A diphtheria epidemic also struck Elkhorn, resulting in many deaths, particularly of children. Soon after, railroad service to Elkhorn was halted and only a fraction of the original inhabitants remained. This sequence was shot in the summer of 2001. Rare Fish from Elkhorn Creek
Rare fish from the Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky. This is a small video of either a Duskytail or Relict Darter. They are protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act. This was caught accidentally on a lipless crank bait. It was released immediatly after I shot this video. It swam away fine. It's only the second one I've seen in over 20 yrs of fishing!!! Young foxes are called kits. Kits are typically born in the spring and live with mom until they reach sexual maturity in the fall. Gray foxes are monogamous. In the video the mother come out of the den and greet the father with two youngsters running close behind. Gray foxes are one of only two canine species in the world which have curved claws that allow them to climb trees. This enhances the gray fox's ability to hunt and escape from danger. In the spring of 2004 Henrik Kibak, Jotham Fisher-Smith, and Kenton Parker set up a solar-powered 802.11b network that covered large areas of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. The project was funded through a WeTEC and US Department of Education grant administered by Arlene Krebs and Cindy Lopez.

Okeanis researchers, working in partnership with the Elkhorn Slough Foundation and the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, witnessed the birth of a healthy otter pup on April 27, 2011. It is a very rare sight to see a wild otter born. This video was taken just minutes after the birth in the Elkhorn Slough. Researchers kept their distance to help the new mother feel safe.
