NOVA | Hunting the Elements

Where do nature's building blocks, called the elements, come from? They're the hidden ingredients of everything in our world, from the carbon in our bodies to the metals in our smartphones. To unlock their secrets, David Pogue, the lively host of NOVA's popular "Making Stuff" series and technology correspondent of The New York Times, spins viewers through the world of weird, extreme chemistry: the strongest acids, the deadliest poisons, the universe's most abundant elements, and the rarest of the rare--substances cooked up in atom smashers that flicker into existence for only fractions of a second. Why are some elements--like platinum or gold--inert, while others--like phosphorus or potassium--are violently explosive? Why are some vital to every breath we take while others are lethal toxins that kill off their discoverers, as with Marie Curie? As he digs for answers, Pogue reveals the story of the elements to be a rich stew simmering with passion, madness, and obsessive scientific rivalry. Punctuated by surprising and often alarming experiments, this program takes NOVA on a roller-coaster ride through nature's hidden lab and the compelling stories of discovery that revealed its secrets.

This is my attempt to animate the famous Elements song by Tom Lehrer. (If you want the lyrics, just do a web search for "Tom Lehrer Elements lyrics".) The original version had a few errors which I've corrected.)

These Are The Elements (Periodic Table Song, in order)

Periodic table song / rap with all the named elements in order. Easy and fun to memorize. UPDATE #4: New supplementary song to help memorize the Symbols: www.youtube.com UPDATE #3: Karaoke version now available: www.youtube.com UPDATE #2: Lyrics are at the bottom... copy and paste! UPDATE: You can now download a slightly revised version of this song as an mp3, at the following URL: bookbusband.com Furthermore, I release this song and this recording under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license. For details of what that means, see: creativecommons.org (It's like the generic Creative Commons Attribution license offered by YouTube, except that you may not use it for commercial gain. And hey, let me know if you do use it!) --------------- My first attempt at rapping... This was a challenge from my sister to help our high school kids memorize the periodic table. Though Tom Lehrer's version is famous, it doesn't include some of the more recently named elements, and (more importantly) it doesn't present them in order. www.youtube.com I highly recommend the TMBG song "The Elements" as a helpful reminder of what the elements are, and also as an example of a really excellent learning song, both educationally and musically. www.youtube.com If you are using this song/video to memorize the periodic table, take advantage of a number of mnemonic devices I built in. All of the "noble" gases except for helium are labeled as such in the song... That means you know you're on ...

The Periodic Table (Rapping the elements!)

Many people have heard of Tom Lehrer's 'The Elements' song. One day I decided to search for it online to memorise some stuff about the elements and found out that Daniel 'Harry Potter' Radcliffe had recently recited it on TV. I wondered what he (and the viewers) might have learnt about the elements by listening to it but shock horror...after listening I realised the song hadn't actually told me anything about The Periodic Table, except what's on it! So I decided to do my own song, specifically about The Periodic Table. The chorus contains the first 36 elements in order up to Krypton. The first verse covers general info about the Periodic table. The second verse lists the Alkali Metals and The Alkaline Earth Metals. The third verse lists the Halogens and the Noble Gases. Let me know if this rap helps you at all...or if it doesn't. Out of interest, if you manage to memorise the chorus, how long did it take. good luck with your studies, or thirst for knowledge. Peace, OK

The truth I know is this I don't want to miss you more Than I already do I'm screaming My lungs out 'Cause I'm wishing You were here with me now I'm impatient I apologize many times But I'm human And I'm selfish Got the feeling I should deal with this But I'm hiding Know one knows ...they don't So what if I don't want to be the lonely one? The truth I know is this I don't want to miss you more Than I already do At sunrise I find a new releasing And moonlight Creeping sounds of you tonight Are you finding? I still need to know That you find Amusing memory What if I don't want to be the lonely one? The truth I know is this I don't want to miss you more, oh What if I don't want to be the lonely one? The Element Song

Yep, Tom Lehrer's fun lil ditty about that big poster you've probably all seen in your local chemistry room. If you can memorize this and sing it to your chemistry teacher, I'm sure they'll most likely give you extra credit. :P This is my movie for my computer class this year, so all that text at the end... that was to fill time and make it the required 3 minutes. o__x Basically all it's saying is this: 15 elements discovered since Tom wrote it, 10 of which have been named. -insert names of those above mentioned 10 elements here. If you want to know them so badly, watch it or look it up on Wikipedia.- Then credits to Tom for making the song and Wikipedia for the extra info about it and those extra elements. And a small disclaimer at the end saying I drew all the pictures in MSPaint. Really, that's all the text at the end is saying. All in all, I think it turned out rather well... I'm happy with it, anyway. The only thing that I really don't like is that it lags a bit around molybdenum and argon-krypton-neon and so on. But I can excuse the last one because he's rattling them off SO FREAKING FAST the program has a hard time keeping up with him. PS: I used the program called PowerDirector to make this.
