How to use electrolysis for rust removal
Electrolysis is the least destructive method of removing rust as it does not disturb un-rusted metal. Your finished part will be free of abrasion. This is a good method to use on a complex part that would be difficult to sand or wire brush.

Electrolysis Of Water
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com One important use of electrolysis of water is to produce hydrogen. 2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g); E0 = +1.229 V Hydrogen can be used as a fuel for powering internal combustion engines by combustion or electric motors via hydrogen fuel cells (see Hydrogen vehicle). This has been suggested as one approach to shift economies of the world from the current state of almost complete dependence upon hydrocarbons for energy (See hydrogen economy.) The energy efficiency of water electrolysis varies widely. The efficiency is a measure of what fraction of electrical energy used is actually contained within the hydrogen. Some of the electrical energy is converted to heat, a useless byproduct. Some reports quote efficiencies between 50% and 70%. This efficiency is based on the Lower Heating Value of Hydrogen. The Lower Heating Value of Hydrogen is total thermal energy released when hydrogen is combusted minus the latent heat of vaporisation of the water. This does not represent the total amount of energy within the hydrogen, hence the efficiency is lower than a more strict definition. Other reports quote the theoretical maximum efficiency of electrolysis as being between 80% and 94%. The theoretical maximum considers the total amount of energy absorbed by both the hydrogen and oxygen. These values refer only to the efficiency of converting electrical energy into hydrogen's chemical energy. The energy lost in generating the electricity is not included ...
Colorful Water Electrolysis
In my class students learn about chemical reactions and also the difference between elements and compounds. Students learn that the 5 signs of a chemical reaction are: 1) color change 2) gas production 3) precipitation 4) temperature change 5) change in properties (smell, texture, taste, density, etc.) Students also learn that compounds are chemicals that have 2 or more elements bonded together, such as water. In this demonstration, students can observe the compound water undergo a chemical reaction, and break apart into hydrogen and oxygen gas. This demonstration can be done on an overhead projector so that all students can view it easily. ScienceFix.com Producer: Darren Fix

easy electrolysis,,,, the clean way
Simply brilliant, rust removal with electricity, redneck, oh! no, we are talking about the fourth floor here, simply brilliant, derusting with electrolysis, Edison, Tesla, Ford, Maytag, this process goes way back, I think this block of carbon I am using for the anodes is impregnated with a high percentage of graphite, I am thinking a composite of these and probily with additional ingredients, unknown to me as this block was an el-cheapo, estate sale buy, it does conduct electricity very good, fill a plastic bucket with five gallons of tap water, throw in a couple of hand fulls of sodium carbonate, (arm & hammer super washing soda, you get it at the grocery store, in the laundry dept.), carbon for the anode, part to be cleaned is the cathode, hook-er up to a 12 volt battery charger, use a jumper wire to connect the anodes together, set to 6 or 8 amps., plug-er in and have patience,, lots of it, it's in the sun all day, yes! that's solar heating, use it to your advantage, I do my part, leave a comment, subscribe, pass it on,, the technical part will be left up to your own research, as I do not have a clue as to what the answer is,, what?, just yesterday the duck tape girl said to me, 'a hippie don't get above your learning, now where is the half dozen old rusty cast iron skillets she done saved from the scrap man?, no name, made in the USA, atomic number six, get back dog! get back! from here on the east coast of Arkansas, the show goes on, thanks, shopdogsam
Hydrogen Electrolysis - 1 Part 1
www.hho4free.com ......Website recently Updated.......Lots of HHO information............... MUST READ THIS - Electrolysis of water into Hydrogen & Oxygen. Increase your MPG via the unused power of your Alternator, while you drive. These are the first hydrogen cells we made last year. We started with the Joe Cell concept and modified it for Electrolysis. The 4 parts of this video show you the inner works of the gas production. You will see, from a birds eye view, the gas being produced in a solid stainless steel container; one that can be put under a strong vaccum. At startup, notice that the gas is being produced in the center of the cell. It then starts producing in adjacent tubes as current moves towards the positive outer tube. For this to happen, your tubes need to be properly aligned North and South. That is, the tops of each tube must be magnetic North, and the bottoms must be magnetic South (the tubes contain "some" magnetism. Think of the tube as a magnet. If your alignment is off on a tube, there will be little to no gas production around that tube. You can test your tubes for N & S by putting a needle on a thread and magnetizing the tip of the needle (N or S). Hang the thread over the tube, just barely clearing the surface, and rock each end of the tube under the needle. It will start to swing as you rock. One end will swing more than the other. Mark them accordingly and put your tubes together with the like marks facing the same direction. It works. Part 2 ...
Y12 Electrolysis: Aqueous Copper (II) Sulphate using Copper Electrodes
From 20to9.com. The experiment is demonstrated and the results discussed. Note that the blue colour of the solution does not change. As quickly as copper ions are formed and released into the solution at the anode, they are discharged at the cathode to form copper. The process simply amounts to copper moving from the anode to the cathode therefore. At the end, it is explained how this process is employed in the electrolytic refining of blister copper. Electrolysis in distilled water with no electrolyte
"Crux_fwc" is involved in a project with the H2earth Institute to replicate the work of the late Stanley Meyer, who ran vehicles on water. Crux_fwc's electrolysis cell is making hydrogen gas in distilled water, with no electrolyte. Conventional electrolysis, which, by definition, relies on a conductive medium, says that is impossible. The cell in this video is 4 inches tall with outer tube diameter of 0.75 inches and inner tube diameter of 0.5 inches; running on 96 volts x 3.3 amps = 316 watts at 240Hz; with iron core bifilar chokes. He said, "My WFC circuit is not complete yet so I really do not recommend that people replicate it." "His username at waterfuelcell.org is "crux_wfc". Hydrogen Electrolysis - 1 Part 3
www.hho4free.com ......Website recently Updated.......Lots of HHO information............... This video shows more of what is going on inside an HHO cell. When our 12 volt DC power source is connected to the cell, the electrical pressure causes current to flow from one tube to another; negative to positive. A magnetic field is created around the tubes. You can see it drawing the tiny bubbles down towards the bottom of the cell. They then cycle back to the top, between the tubes. The outside tube has the most influence on the bubbles moving in a downward direction. The magnetic flux movement is from North to South on the outside and South to North on the inside of the tubes. Electrolysis takes place on the surface of the tubes. Therefore, surface area on the tubes plays a part in the quantity of HHO that can be produced. When DC voltage is applied to the tubes it causes a chemical reaction in the water molecules. The water molecules H+ ions become attracted to the Negative Cathode in the cell, and OH- ions become attracted to the Positive Anode. The byproduct is HH gas on the Cathode tube and O gas on the Anode tube. In other words, the release of the positive hydrogen and negative oxygen gas. If you could get down to eye level with the waters surface, you would see tiny bubbles jumping out of the water and popping. Looks similar to those caused by pouring carbonated water. The popping of the bubbles sets the gas free as it rises. The hydrogen is 14 times lighter than air ...
Stanley Meyer VIC resonant electrolysis mod
Can't see video? Download HERE (New Link): www.divshare.com This video actually works on some browsers, but recently it gives "sorry, this video is no longer available" on other browsers. If that's the case, follow the above link ------------ Splitting distilled water with a 12 volt power supply. This came out of an attempt to maximize reactive power and minimize active power in the circuit... although I'm not sure that was accomplished in the video. Anyway... Circuit and parts are listed in the video. The setup is basically the Voltage Intensifier Circuit of Meyer with one major change: the second inductor (2nd wire in a bifilar-wound E core) instead of being in series with the circuit, has only one end attached to the circuit. How or why this works, I don't yet know, but it does allow more power into the distilled water than any other method I have tried so far. It is also frequency-dependent, unlike other methods where bubble action didn't depend on any magical frequencies. Here, though, the first major resonant point is around 20kHz for my cell. There is about 2 inches of overlap between inner and outer steel cell. Also I drew the bulb location wrong - in the video it's after the WFC, but in my diagram it was shown before... no difference since it behaved the same either way. The bulb was put after the WFC as an indicator of power flow, and potentially as the "amp consuming device" Meyer talked about. Yeah I know it's supposed to go before the WFC but goofed in my ...

Y12 Electrolysis: Extraction of Aluminium in the Hall-Heroult Cell. From 20to9.com
One of several hundred video-tuitions in high school chemistry, available at 20to9.com. The cell is illustrated and the process demonstrated using simple paper models. The chemical extraction of Alumina (Al2O3) from Bauxite is also considered very briefly. Aluminium was first extracted in the middle of the 19th Century. Then it was obtained directly from molten alumina. Due to the very high mp of alumina and the huge cost of generating electricity at that time, aluminium was more expensive than gold. By the early part of the 20th Century, with the development of much a cheaper means of generating electricity and Hall's discovery/invention, aluminium had become relatively cheap. #01 Electrolysis Of Sodium Chloride (Cl2 is produced!)
When electrolysing a solution of NaCl, you'd normally expect water to be oxidized to oxygen and oxonium because of the electrode potentials (given values are E0): Cl2 + 2 e− ⇌ 2 Cl− +1,36 V O2 + 4 H3O+ + 4 e− ⇌ 6 H2O +1,23 V Normally, the oxidation reaction with the lower potential happens, so one would expect that water oxidation would be preferred over chloride oxidation. But in reality, the potentials depend on many factors such as concentration, type of the electrodes used, temperature, etc. That's why you can "trick out" the potentials by using a graphite anode and a saturated NaCl solution. The smaller chloride ion can attach to the graphite more easily than the bigger H2O molecule, so the chloride ion will be oxidized to chlorine ("over voltage" effect). This favours the chloride oxidation. Using a higher concentration of chloride ions will also shift the preffered oxidation reaction towards chloride oxidation (This is understandable if you look at the Nernst Equation). However, some of the chlorine produced that way will react with the OH- ions produced by the cathode to form ClO- and Cl- (in succession ClO3- and ClO4- as well): Cl2 + 2 OH(-) ⇌ Cl(-) + OCl(-) + H2O 3 OCl(-) ⇌ 2 Cl(-) + ClO3(-) To reduce such disproportionation effects, HCl can be added. On the one hand, this increases Cl(-) concentration, on the other hand it reduces OH(-) concentration. Both effects hinder the chlorine from reacting to hypochlorite , because the reactions are pushed ...

Electrolysis rust removal on gas tank cap
I've been restoring an old 1971 Yamaha AT1. As with any old bike, there is a lot of rust. I've been using the electrolysis method with great success. Here is a video of it an action on the gas tank cap. For those of you asking how to do it. You need a battery charge, a piece of metal (that will collect the rust), some type of bucket or container, water and Sodium Carbonate. You mix Sodium Carbonate with the water and submerge the part to be cleaned. Place the piece of metal (I use a coat hanger) in the bucket near the part, but not touching. This is the important part! Attach the negative terminal to the part to be cleaned and the positive part to the metal that will take all the rust. Let this run until the part is clean.
