One of the traditional trades that have been going on for centuries in India is that of ear cleaning. If somebody wanted to know the latest gossip about the king and the court in Delhi, they either went to a barber or an ear cleaner. Almost every ear cleaner in North India will trace back his forefathers' origin to the medieval times and claim that their forefathers worked in the courts of the Mughals. "This profession was handed down to me by my father, and this has been going on for centuries now", says Munawwar Alam or Chotey as he is popularly known amongst his friends. 30-year-old Munawwa has been in this profession for the last 15 years." Auditory Transduction (2002)
This 7-minute video by Brandon Pletsch takes viewers on a step-by-step voyage through the inside of the ear, to the acoustic accompaniment of classical music. Pletsch, a former medical illustration student at the Medical College of Georgia, first built a physical ear model and mapped which frequency ranges hit which parts of the inner ear. He then created digital renderings of each part of the hearing pathway using several software packages. A narrator describes how the sound waves travel through each portion of the ear, and how hair cells translate the vibrations they induce into nerve impulses.

The ear is actually the key element of the film, shot in RED and partly to be made in 3d animation. Throughout the film, the ear and inner ear as a whole turn themselves into an EarBrige as they get crossed by a bridge. The EarBridge is part of a public project proposal for Baku, Azerbaijan that includes a number of important international contemporary artists.

But in Japan, a neuro-technology company is taking serious brainwave science and turning it into fun. In Tokyo, they're all ears for the latest in hi-tech fashion. The headware is called "Necomimi" - or cat ears in Japanese. And it doubles as a communication device. Necomimi can be controlled by the wearer's thoughts and emotions. Necomimi was created by a company called Neurowave. They're using basic, non-invasive neuroimaging technologies and adapting them for the fashion world. Apart from the ears, Necomimi has two brain-wave sensors that can read the emotions of the wearer. Red brain waves show nervousness or concentration. Green waves indicate a relaxed state of mind. The ears shoot up when the wearer is nervous or focused. They flatten when the wearer is relaxed. When a person is relaxed but also focussed on a specific activity like a game or reading a book, the ears swirl around in a circle. When brain activity is low, the ears just flap gently back and forth. One of the creators of Nekomimi says she wanted to come up with a communication device that could be enjoyed by everyone. The Ear: the Organ of Hearing The ear is the organ of hearing. The pinna of the outer ear collects sound waves and channels them along the external auditory meatus to the ear drum. The eardrum vibrates and mechanical waves are transmitted by the ossicles, three small bones of the middle ear-the malleus, incus and stapes-to the cochlea of the inner ear. The cochlea, a coiled tube filled with fluid, contains the organ of Corti. Fluid waves, created within the cochlea, excite nerve cells in the organ of Corti, which send impulses along the auditory nerve to the brain. The semicircular canals, the saccule and the utricle are concerned with balance and the posture of the body.

Experimental Audio Research - Data Rape
Track 6 from EAR's 1998 "Data Rape". From the liner notes: Circuit bending involves taking cheaply available electronic soundmaking toys (in this case mostly Texas Instruments' "Speak & Spell" human voice synthesizing toys from the late '70's, but also applicable to all sorts of keyboards, effects boxes and samplers) and adding extra wires, knobs and switches to make new connections between parts of the internal circuitry and chips. This sends data and electronic signals to previously unrelated circuit board points - inducing through a strange sort of "Data Rape"- astounding new sounds, chance evolving compositions and textures, phoneme freezing and looping, random glottal pulse and phoneme generation, complex lattice filtering and unique pitch shifting techniques.
