Exclusive 17-minute interview with E Ink's CMO at CES, where they showed me a Triton color display for signage with color so saturated that it looked like an LCD except that it was thinner than OLED, sunlight readable, uses no backlights and uses very little power. I also saw the SURF display used in a hand drill which has not been filmed before. The 11.5" 300DPI eDocument reader made in collaboration with Epson. The Triton color display based Ectaco eReader that had just won the CES innovation award, it is being deployed in Russian schools. New E Ink watches from Phosphor and Seiko. Finally, the Eton Ruckus music player with E Ink display that was launched this week was demonstrated, it is considered to be indestructible. E Ink has shipped over 25 million E Ink screens for e-readers alone in 2011, that's up from 10 million screens in 2010 and 4 million screens in 2009. Now E Ink is also working to expand into new markets, signage, appliances, everywhere. The idea is that more and more devices and surfaces may get an E Ink screen on them that thus by being bi-stable can show the informations for a long time without using any battery. While many electronic paper technology companies show samples, E Ink is actually in mass production with monochrome, color and segmented displays and they claim that no technology in the world comes close to the reading experience on E Ink's displays and these displays are easy on the eyes since they don't have a shiny background or light ...

A quick review and demonstration to share my Ectaco JetBook COLOR. This is the first color e-ink technology e-reader and it is extremely cool. Still waiting for the firmware to release and give us that internet browser so we can use it to surf the net, but then it is already very cool with all the pre-loaded softwares. FPD: E Ink and LG color e-paper screens debut in Japan
CHIBA, JAPAN -- The first electronic paper displays that can show color were unveiled Wednesday at the Flat Panel Display International show in Japan. The screens open to way for electronic book readers like Amazon's Kindle and Sony's Reader to add color but so far only a single Chinese device maker has committed to the technology.

Amazon Kindle DX Graphite Video Review
A video review of the Amazon Kindle DX Graphite ebook reader. This is Amazon's newest 9.7" ereader and it features new screen technology that increases contrast by 50%. The Kindle DX Graphite has free 3G that you can use to download books and surf web sites, built-in storage for up to 3500 books and text-to-speech. The Kindle works with Amazon ebooks and PDF files but it does not work with ePub ebooks.
Snaplet: A Flexible E Ink Wristband Computer That Senses Its Shape
Snaplet is a wrist worn thin-film wearable paper computer based on a 3.7" flexible electrophoretic (E Ink) display. It features touch sensors for navigating applications, and bend sensors that allow Snaplet to determine its current functionality depending on its shape. Phone calls can be made by removing the wrist band, and curving the screen. Calls are dropped by popping the display. Snaplet also features a flexible wacom pen tablet that allows users to write on it as if it were a piece of interactive paper.

ePaper www.netbooknews.com Think that ePaper is for eReaders only? EInk wants you to think otherwise with a display that they've put together showing several other applications that ePaper would be great for. This transition towards other uses is a necessary step since the price of eReaders is slowly edging toward that of tablets. If eReaders want to remain competitive they're going to have to drop in price or change thier model to being free with content subscription. I'm not saying that they will be replaced by tablets but only that if they want to maintain sales they are going to have to look at alternative uses. You'll see display's in credit cards so when you're doing some online shopping you're transactions and identity will be secure or a mifi display so you're not stealing power from your connectivity to check settings. It not a market many people think of but I think it will play a huge role in the future of ePaper. Its ergonomic curved case with ultra-thin profile fit so comfortably on your wrist you may forget you are wearing it, but others won't. The only issues for this time piece is there is no back-light. Which means it is almost useless at night, which makes me sad, but presumably that's the price you pay for e-ink.

At Display Taiwan 2011 we visited the EInk booth and uncovered dozens of other uses for ePaper. Personally I was pleased as punch to see so many other examples as I am of the opinion that ePaper is going to start to migrate into digital signage as tablets will start to eat into eReader sales this coming holiday season. What we are waiting for to know the exact fate of the eReader is what Amazon decided to do in the Fall when it releases its tablet line up. The cost of the eReader is going to have to be either free with subscription or half the cost of a cheap tablet. With the fate of eReaders so uncertain at the moment its great to see so many alternative usages models for this low power consumption display technology.
