I had only been playing doublebass for a few months at the time of this recordig, so please be lenient with he comments about that ;) For the record, ALL double strokes were played with one pedal, ie the ones at the end of the gutiar solo, as you can very clearly see by how crazily tired I was after that piece :) I would hve LOVED to show you the FootCam of this, but I forgot to rewind the tape for the whole third set, so with a few songs I unfortunately couln't use the FootCam shots. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself. Ultimate View of Fire and Flames on Drums
Since getting my new camera angle and capture setup working on my latest videos, this has been the #1 request by far: to redo TTFAF. I kinda wanted to do it anyway, because looking back at my old TTFAF vids, they're such poor video quality. I never get to see what my hands are doing either, so I wanted to see this video too! ;-) I think the reason people wanted to see this is to see more closely how I play it with drum sticks. So for some of the trickier sticking parts, I've slowed it down for a few bars and used a Kameo-esque "warrior focus" mode for added effect. I kinda like it. I only did it in parts that are repetitive so that you could also see it played at normal speed in other parts of the song. This will be my last TTFAF video. I love the song, but it's just too big a mountain to climb. It takes me a 1/2 hour of warm up just to be able to pass it. I practiced it for a couple hours earlier in the day just to try and get back to how good I was at it when I 5-star'd it ( youtube.com ) and even so I couldn't quite reach 5 stars (missed it by a measly 5000 points! If I'd 'a just hit some of those easy SP phrases in the solos, or just not botched the intro... ugh, I'm full of regret... ah well, I have to move on.) This was my 3rd take of the night and by the 4th one I could barely get through the intro. It's just so tiring! Sweat dripping off my face while I'm playing this. Seriously. (whoa, now that's one complicated sentence) Crazy amounts of fun, this one. Loved the groovy parts in the intro and outtro, aswell as the heavy stuff in the middle. Obviously the last few choruses were also quite nice to do :) (As for the outtro doublebass crossovers; it's the only part of the song that was written beforehand, the rest is all improvised on the spot, to keep things fresh and unpredictable.) I think I'm a wuss, truth be told.. haha. I play drums because it's FUN and because it's such an intense form of creative expression. I do songs I sincerely just LOVE, or songs I flat out enjoy jamming to, Tik Tok is one of the latter :) As I have said in previous videos, I am not even closely interested in Rock vs Pop politics, debating the difference between "good" and "bad" quality music is irrelevant to how much fun it might be to jam along to. LOVED jamming along to this song, when groove meets power, you have one very satisfied Cobus.
